Family-friendly St. Paul hotel surrounded by historical scenery
St. Paul is the elder to "Twin City" Minneapolis and the Old World vibe is definitely in the air. A few blocks from the stately Minnesota History Center, the Holiday Inn St. Paul Downtown nestles right into the historical scenery. But historical doesn't mean sleepy. Across the street from the Holiday Inn sits the event-packed Xcel Energy Center, home of the Minnesota Wild. The Minnesota Children's Museum is a ten minute walk away, where kids eat free at the hotel's on-site restaurant.
Highlights
- Indoor pool, whirlpool and Fitness Center
- Complimentary shuttle runs within a three-mile radius (based on availability)
- Kids eat free at The Liffey, the hotel's on-site authentic Irish restaurant
Location
Situated perfectly in the capital of Minnesota, the Holiday Inn St. Paul Downtown is surrounded by rich culture and history. Seated high on a hilltop aptly called Cathedral Hill is the stunning Cathedral of St. Paul. A vigorous ten minute walk away, the incredible views overlooking St. Paul and the Mississippi River Valley are unforgettable.
Rooms
With an emphasis on comfort, the 194 rooms at the Holiday Inn St. Paul are decorated in hazel hues of creamy caramel, khaki and blue-green. Crisp white linens and dark wood furnishings offer contrast and a modern look. Rooms feature free high-speed Internet, pay-per-view movies, a roomy work desk and a mini refrigerator. Suites include separate seating area, sleeper sofa and double bathrooms.
Dining
Unique to this St. Paul hotel is a spirited Irish pub, The Liffey. Built in Dublin, Ireland, and then shipped and constructed in St. Paul, the authentic pub offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. And kids eat free! The rich Irish cuisine features heavy classics like corned beef and cabbage, green ox sausage and champ, and steak and mushroom pie. Wee appetites might leap for the thick and chewy Sea Salt Baked Pub Pretzel.
Recreation
All guests have free access to the on-site health and fitness center. Workout on the treadmill, elliptical trainer or weight machines. Water lovers can dip in the indoor pool or relax in the whirlpool.

How the mighty have fallen
This Holiday Inn is very much like all others, old, worn and not even on par with bargain basement chains. 30 years ago Holiday Inns were special, but hotel chains have advanced and Holiday Inn has stagnated. I stayed here because there no desirable hotel rooms to be found.

Good Location
This is a motel that does not have a lot of extra appeal in an updated style or in providing amenities. It does, however, provide you with a great location - right across the street from the Excel Center, River Centre, Minnesota History Museum and Minnesota Science Museum. If location is your primary reason for selecting a hotel, you could not get a hotel in a better location. If you are looking for overall comfort and those "extras" that many hotels provide, the is not the hotel for you.

Great location, excellent service
I have been at this hotel several times. I think it is perfect for "solo" business travel. If you travel with children or if you want to have small meetings at the hotel, I would recommend you going to the Embassy Suites (larger rooms, the office / living room at each suite seats four or five people, and they serve free breakfast). The Holiday Inn has great location, nice and efficient employees, free shuttle to local attractions and there are several restaurants withing a few blocks from the hotel. One more point: depending on the season you travel, you may want to go to the Hilton because it has direct access to the skyway (one of the best features of Saint Paul) or the Embassy Suites because of its proximity to the Regents Hospital

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
When you arrive to MSP, follow the signs for public BUS. For $1.75 (Aug 2011) you can go within 100 yards from the hotel (just ask the driver, the hotel is next to the Excel Center). Otherwise, a cab will cost you around $30-$35

Good location, food; a few complaints
I spent a week at this hotel while I was in town for a seminar. The location was very convenient and within walking distance of a number of good restaurants and other attractions. The hotel was fine and I did not have any particular complaints other than some minor plumbing issues in the bathroom (a slow sink drain, and the handle needed to be wiggled to stop the toilet from periodically flushing itself). The hotel is home to The Liffey Irish pub, which although not as great as I had hoped, was much better than most hotel fare. I ate a lot of meals there and can say that there are some good dishes, as well as some mediocre ones. My biggest complaint was the cost of parking. Previous hotel stays have included free parking and I thought the $15 per night rate was quite outrageous. I will definitely use public transportation next time.

Nice hotel, even nicer price :)
Room was small but nice, appeared to be recently updated (decor and newer TV)and it was very clean. Check-in-check out was quick and staff was friendly. Only complaint was the hairdryer in the bathroom did not work.
