Debonair Twin Cities hotel retains roots in Minneapolis
The Grand Hotel Minneapolis knows its roots. Once home to the historic Minneapolis Athletic Club, the modernized property retains its elegant upbringing. Old World luxury is revered in enchanting murals, warm Tuscan tones and plush rooms--some equipped with a fireplace, grand piano and four-poster bed. But the 21st century is not lost on this luxe locale, thanks to offerings like a fusion restaurant and access to the neighboring fitness club.

Highlights
  • Nightly wine reception hour
  • Complimentary use of in-room yoga accessories
  • Luxurious Presidential Suite includes a fireplace and grand piano

Rooms

The Grand Hotel's 140 rooms vary in size, from 325 square feet to a palatial 3,500 square-foot Presidential Suite. All rooms include flat-screen televisions, MP3 docking stations, spacious marble bathrooms, complimentary use of in-room yoga accessories and an honor bar with gourmet and organic delicacies.

Features

Grand Hotel Minneapolis has received numerous awards, including the Top 500 Hotels of the World by Travel + Leisure and perennial AAA Four Diamond Awards. The perfect proximity is noteworthy, too. Connected to the iconic Minneapolis Skyway, the hotel enables guests to reach 69 blocks of downtown destinations from indoors. LifeSpa and Salon presented by LifeTime Fitness offers a full menu of revitalizing services.

Dining

Stop by the Grand Finale Lounge for happy hour specials, tasty casual classics or an easy nightcap. Savor multicultural fusion at Zahtar, where sophisticates can nosh morning to night. Early birds take note -- the cinnamon-vanilla battered challah french toast is divine.

The 58,000-square-foot club boasts an indoor pool with cloud mural ceiling, boxing, cycling and aerobics studios, running track, racquetball, handball and squash courts, steam room, sauna and more. Private yoga and Pilates sessions are available (fees apply).

great stay for weekend getaway

Super friendly and helpful staff. Great location, within walking distance of Metrodome and many great restaurants. Walkable to art museums and sculpture garden. Very comfortable room, despite the awkward layout and dead space.

Very nice night

Checked in for a romantic birthday night for my wife. Room was clean and tidy with all the amenities. Would have liked to be able to fetch my own ice for bottle of wine that we brought along, but hotel has you request ice service. My wife especially liked the deep tub with built in wall television.

The Grand Minneapolis Getaway

The staff members were personable and courteous. The bed was a bit too soft and restaurant hours limited, but still the best hotel stay I ever had.

Lovely hotel

This is an elegant hotel with a great staff. The morning coffee in the lobby was good, but it would have been nice to have a coffeemaker in the room.

Faultless stay, faultless hotel

I'm very pleased to give the Grand Hotel Minneapolis top marks. Before arriving, I had assumed that it might be slightly 'stuffy' - but how wrong I was. Staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming from the moment I checked in. Room was spotless and well equipped (the only thing it lacked for me was a coffee maker or kettle). Hotel facilities were well above average: the limited opening hours of the business centre were off-set by free in-room internet access (just register for loyalty scheme, but this is free) and understand business centre facilities are in any case in process of being improved. The 'wine tasting' hour is just one example of how guests were made to feel welcome (and not as though they are merely being squeezed constantly for an extra pound or dollar) . Other hotel chains please take note: I will be actively seeking out Kimpton's hotels in future, as they clearly know how to ensure that their guests leave not merely content, but happy.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Band Box Diner, 729 S 10th Street. Great for a good value cooked breakfast, in an authentic 1930s diner. About 10-15 mins walk away from the Grand (but that helps burn off the calories!).

Great Time

The hotel is conveniently located about 2 blocks from the lite rail system, which is wonderful. We took a 3-hour bus tour of the twin cities and would recommend this highly. We visited both the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Art and both were outstanding. Bike riding is very popular and the hotel provides bikes even though the city rents them for $5 a day. The food was delicious, the people super friendly and we felt very safe being downtown. A fun, relaxing stay and would recommend it to friends.

Great hotel and great staff!

I had a great 5 day stay at the Grand! Everyone was friendly and efficient, and I was treated exceptionally well. I was there over my birthday and I was even treated to champange and cupcakes by the staff! The only downside to the hotel is that you can't pull up in front of it, so if you're driving, you need to park by the valet stand or find a parking ramp right away. This is only a real issue if you drive; taxis just swing around in front and pick up or drop off. An exceptional experience all around!
