Close your eyes and picture a place to relax in Northern Michigan. Cozy chairs, fieldstone fireplace, tranquil courtyard. A place with history, wood beams and lodge decor. Throw in warm hospitality that comes naturally from a seasoned staff and you find yourself at Birchwood Inn of Harbor Springs, Michigan.

Built in the early sixties as a corporate retreat for New Era Potato Chips, Birchwood Inn has been carefully preserved by the innkeeper with the lodge aura intended by the builders. We welcome individual travelers and group gatherings alike. Birchwood Inn is perfect for family reunions, destination weddings, sporting groups, seminars, and of course, corporate retreats. The philosophy of the original builder, comfortable surroundings fosters friendships, is deeply held by the innkeeper today.

Mornings begin with a complimentary continental breakfast, where you can chat with the innkeeper, get the forecast for the day and insider information on the area. There are many things to see and do in our neck of the woods, like exploring local beaches for Petoskey stones, visiting resort communities including Mackinaw, playing a round of golf on a championship course, or going on a guided kayak adventure.

The best part however, is returning to the comfort of Birchwood Inn. Take some time to lounge by the pool in summer or sit in front of a roaring fire in winter. Fall is a colorful time to visit as well, the Inn is located at the beginning of the -Tunnel of Trees- a famous scenic drive along Lake Michigan. If you prefer springtime trillium and morel mushroom hunting, we have that covered, too. Whichever the season, the place to relax and enjoy your visit to Northern Michigan is Birchwood Inn.

Daily housekeeping is available.

IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE: The Birchwood Inn does NOT accept American Express, AMEX, credit cards both on the property and at the time of booking.

4th of July weekend

Very friendly, accommodating staff. Very old, old smelling rooms. Couldn't be more basic. Bed was fairly comfortable though

Birchwood Inn

This is located on the Tree of Tunnels north of Harbor Springs. The hotel is located in a beautiful place. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms are older but keep clean. This is not fancy but the price was right and we enjoyed our three nights and four days there.

Quaint lovely getaway!!

I have stayed at Birchwood a number of times! We love the fact that it reflects what northern MI is. It's a place to get away, relax, enjoy simpler things in life. The fireplace in the breakfast room is wonderful while enjoying the continental breakfast with the snow falling outside the windows. It takes me back to my childhood and coming up north. If you are looking for a high rise hotel with elevators and room service, this is not the hotel. But if you want to show your kids what it was like when you were a kid coming up north...this is the Inn for you!

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

Only 10 minutes to the ski areas in the winter and 5 minutes to the beach in the summer. Minutes from golf and right at the start of the "Tunnel of Trees"

Total disappointment

It was a motel in disrepair and needed a lot of updating as well. The two story building did not have an elevator. It had a series of steps leading up to the building without railings. The outside stairs were also unlevel making it a bit unsafe. The room was definitely rustic with holes in the hallway wall painted to look as if it was part of the rustic theme and accompanied by a few bugs as well. The most enjoyable part was that it was quiet because there were not many visitors and it was surrounded by a large luxurious horse farm with beautiful horses in the fields. The amenities were few. The cost was extremely overpriced. The website pictures were deceiving. I would not return to this motel if ever visiting the area again.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

The New York restaurant in downtown Harbor Springs across from the pier.
