Great Business Travel Hotel
The hotel has great access to the highways, the tunnel to Windsor, Ontario, Canada and the People Mover, Detroit's mass transit system. Since it's in the heart of Detroit, you can't get a better connected hotel. The staff was friendly and able to help with every question I had. My only qualm is that you have to pay for internet connections. Many other hotels nearby off free internet connections and/or WiFi.

Detroit In the Sky
This is the best location to stay if you want to go to NAIAS at Cobo Hall. You can walk there in minutes. The hotel location has GM vehicles on display as well. Within close walking distance to Greektown Casino, restaurants, bars, nightlife, etc. Perfect if you don't want to rent a car!

Not for families
Mediocre- booked te family package with kids meals included and had to come down to front desk to argue that it was included- and show my confirmation. Also, I requested a roll away as it was myself and three children and they said the room they gave me want big enough for a roll away- it was new years day. The hotel was empty, they could have given me a room big enough for a roll away- a little disappointing.

Great location, disappointing amenities
I was very much looking forward to staying at the Renaissance Center Marriott to celebrate a big occasion with two close friends. I requested a room with a view of the Detroit River and two queen beds (as opposed to one king), both of which ended up being honored (but not guaranteed), which was very nice. The best part about the room was the view, but as other reviewers have said, the room and bathroom were quite small, though it did include a rather spacious closet. The room was spotlessly clean and the bedding was very high-quality and plush. The hotel itself has a beautiful interior, and being located in the Center, includes easy interior access to a few restaurants and bars. The biggest disappointment--and one that would prevent me from coming back--is the lack of amenities and outrageous charges for things other hotels (and Marriotts specifically) normally provide free-of-charge or for a very minimal fee. For instance, parking is $15/day and valet is $25/day (see parking tip below); the room does NOT include basic cable or even a couple of basic non-cable news networks (I'm not sure how much these cost, but movies run in the $13-17 range); it does not include a basic continental breakfast; and one member of my party requested Asprin at the front desk late at night and was charged $9.53 for a small bottle! Moreover, it doesn't have a pool, whirlpool, spa or fitness center. These charges for what I would consider basic amenities made us feel unappreciated and taken-advantage of. Though the hotel staff was very professional and courteous, we did not feel that our presence or business was particularly welcomed. All told, we wouldn't stay again because of this, but these types of things might not matter as much to some. Being someone who recently lived in downtown Detroit for two years (and someone who is also aware of the city's reputation in other places), I would highly recommend the downtown location to travelers from out of town. I've never had a problem with safety in the downtown area; many younger professionals work and live in the vicinity, and it has a very active nightlife (especially in Greektown, a ten-minute walk from the Center) with many residents from the city's suburbs. You can use the monorail system (which passes through the RenCen) to travel throughout the downtown area, but it's common practice to walk around the area at night without issue. There are often events held at Hart Plaza to the immediate west of the Center; this past weekend was JazzFest. All told, as in any urban area, it's smart to use common sense, but the area doesn't deserve its reputation (the outskirts of the downtown area are a different story).

Short walk from hotel
The hotel charges $15-25 per day for parking, but there is a public lot on Beaubien Street (the Atwater parking structure) to the immediate east of the hotel that charges $9/day. A slight savings, but it all adds up!

It's all about the location
Impressive looking building, nice lobby & bar. The rooms are rather tired looking. Pretty expensive for what you get (and don't get-add $12.95 for a day of internet access.) My wife saw a cockroach in the bathroom, so we won't be coming back.

Perfect for safe and nice stay in downtown Detroit
The location is perfect for staying safe in downtown Detroit. The hotel is a part of Renaissance Center, so there were some shops like a small shopping mall. However it's quite small, and there's no store that's fancy. Most of the shops were closed on the weekend, even Saturday.
