A compromise for first time stay at Portland

On the plus side, the hotel is connected to two restaurants, an upscale one that offered lobster dinners at reasonably attractive prices and a family restaurant for ordinary breakfasts. The location is just off I-95, easy access but not great for easy access to downtown Portland. On the other hand, downtown Portland lacked points of interest. One wished that the local citizens didn't take preservation of old delapidated waterfront so literally. On the downside, the hallways of the hotel needed some serious freshening to get rid of sour smoky smell. We were to find on this visit that Ogunquit and Portsmouth (NH) would have been more interesting places to stay over.

Served its purpose

The hotel was clean, affordable and in a good location. Easy access to I-95 and minutes from Portland. Pool was being renovated, so no comment there. It was a place to hang out and lay our heads. Our vacation was spent out and about. So again, it served its purpose for us to crash at night. Great value and I'll use it again the next time.

Near Airport

This was the end of our week long vacation in Maine. We chose this hotel for its proximity to the Portland Maine airport. The hotel is a newly remodeled older hotel. The room was very clean and had a new king size mattress. The staff were efficient, ample parking and a Friendly's restaurant connected to the hotel for breakfast. There is nothing fancy about this hotel, but it was minutes to the airport, just off the turnpike. We drove to the Portland waterfront for a lobster dinner, which is only a 15 minute drive. We generally prefer a newer hotel, but this was fine for one night.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

There is a small coffee maker in the room. But I just walked to the Friendly's Restaurant through the lobby and bought large coffee's with cream to go to. Much better than the in room coffee.

most relaxing business trip

Everyone at the hotel was very accomodating. Not everything was perfect, but it rarely is. What made it great was that staff corrected anything that was brought to their attention in a very pleasant manner.

Howard Johnson Review

We were pretty satisfied with our experience at this hotel. The only complaints we had were that the drains in the bathtub and all the sinks did not drain very well at all. The toilet flush seemed dysfunctional most of the time. The beds weren't made really well. Other than those details, it was a pretty good experience.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

There was a lot of information on what attractions were available and how to get in touch with them for more information. That was really helpful.

Nothing much to talk about

Perfectly ordinary hotel. Location is not great, with some distance from city downtown and not much around it to walk to. Housekeeping services are unsatisfactory. One day we were not sure if they even changed the towels as they were supposed to. The positive points are - washing machine on premises, and its decent for families.

Clean but not comfortable

Kids filled the hallways and when front desk was asked to help quiet noise, nothing was done. Fitness center was "run down".Hotel room was VERY clean, housekeeping staff was quite friendly and gave us clean towels and cleaned the room every day. the only other thing was the A/C broke our 3rd night and a part of the bathroom shelf broke. Maintence was supposed to fix it, but not until after we checked out. Great hotel, not great amenties. No Cont. Breakfast. Small room without fridge.Clean room, no smoke smell. fresh bathroom. I would not stay again.

Hotel Experience at Howard Johnson

I was in Portland to spend time with friends, family and go to the beach. The hotel was disappointing experience. Not very friendly front desk staff. The entire hotel smelled of cigarettes and so did my non-smoking room. The sinks in my room were filled with several dead bugs and didn't drain properly nor did the shower. When you took a shower you stood in inches of water the whole time. The air conditioner didn't work properly would turn on and off all the time no matter how you changed it. Also had a blow dryer going and flat iron on 2 different outlets and it blew a fuse so no lights in the bathroom. They also advertised a continental breakfast and there was no breakfast served. Also didn't realize where the hotel was located was in a part of town that required toll payment to travel anywhere. The pool and hot tub were nice and good temperatures. The only positive parts were free wi-fi (even though not very fast) and the pool and hot tub.

The only recommendation that was given was to hotel restaurant and gave a 10% off coupon that was not able to be used towards alcohol. Also gave my car description so if lights were left on they would notify me.
