Surprisingly pleasant stay

Would recommend Tue, Oct 6, 2015
We arrived the first weekend of Oct with pretty low expectations, considering reviews I have read. Consider us pleasantly surprised when we were able to check in a bit early and be given a room that was very clean. Location of this hotel is perfect on the boards. The only problem we had - the room key kept getting messed up, so we had to have them constantly replaced (might have been us messing them up). Would I go back - absolutely

Great location is about it

Would not recommend Mon, Oct 5, 2015
We booked this room at the last minute and we're thrilled to get such a great location at a competitive price. Then we checked the reviews. I thought really, it can't be that bad, it's always full! If you're one that enjoys a clean hotel this is NOT the hotel for you! Wet carpets in the hallway that squished, filthy elevators, smells that were unreal as well as thin sheets, rickety chairs and a teeny tiny ancient tv are the hallmarks of this property. We had one little trash can for the room. When they refreshed the rooms during the day the room trash and dirty towels were left outside the door and when we checked out the next day they were still piled up and down the hallway. Due to a major storm we lost power for about 2 hours. Not a big deal and totally out of their control. What was within their control were the emergency and exit lights. A few exit lights worked but we did not see one emergency light on. This is a death trap! Oh, and someone (pretty sure it was the front desk attendant ) was crashed on the couch in the lobby in the morning. Never again!

Great Location, Horrible Hotel

Would not recommend Tue, Sep 15, 2015
The location is great, right on 5th right in the heart of the boardwalk, and you can walk to almost everything in OC, but that's where the good part of our trip stopped. I knew that we were in trouble when we tried to check in 30 minutes early and they looked at me like I was talking in a foreign language. Then I realized that we were talking in a foreign language to them. Almost everyone in the hotel spoke very broken English with the exception of one maid and one bartender at the pool. I'm not an ugly American please don't get me wrong, but you have to be able to converse with the guests when you work somewhere. When we got into the room it wasn't the cleanest that I've seen and we debated even using the fridge, but we decided to make the best of things and make some coffee. Then I realized that they had single cup packets and a full pot coffee maker. I threw several little packets in there and went with it and then realized that there wasn't any cream, sugar or coffee cups, so I went into the hallway and flagged down a maid. She looked at me funny when I asked for coffee cups and then handed me a stack of clear plastic cups that you would find in the bathroom for brushing your teeth. I asked her for coffee cups again and she had a very puzzled look on her face and said that they were coffee cups. So, yet again, I went with it and wrapped some wash cloths around the cup. Then we went out on the deck and went to use the chairs and realized that they were filthy with coffee stains and dirt. Thankfully, we brought some beach chairs so we set them up on the deck to have our coffee, and every room to the right of us was smoking on the deck and the wind was blowing the smoke right in our faces. This happened every time that we tried to go out on the deck for the entire trip. I swear that I smelt smoke for the entire 3 days of the trip. So, we got ready to go out for the night and the toilet clogged, so on the way out we asked them to unclog it and they did while we were out, I have to give them kudos for that, but they left the plunger with plastic wrap around it. The next day, they wanted to clean our room at 8am, and that was way too early for us we were still getting ready, so we just took some towels and I asked her to come back later (which she never did) and I'm happy that she didn't, because the next morning when she changed the bed she left some little friends for us on our final night there. Apparently they don't clean the sheets with a high enough heat and we had bed bugs jumping on our legs while we slept! When I reported it when we left the desk clerk looked at me with a strange look on her face, and said, bed bugs? What are those? I find it very hard to believe that she didn't know what they were. The other thing to mention is the hotel pool and bar. They're grossly understaffed, and need more help. The poor guy running the bar was doing most of the work serving everyone at the bar and running food to all the tables. The waitress there was doing virtually nothing except socializing with her tables and when asked by another one of the customers to do something for the bartender's table she responded with it's not my table and went back to her conversation. I went to use the bathroom there and it was so nasty that I didn't want to use it. It was overflowed and there was trash all over the floor and you can tell that it wasn't cleaned in a very long time. The one kudo that I have to give though, is that the food was excellent. I got a great fish sandwich there. It took forever to get it, and to get my check, but it tasted very good, so it wasn't a complete loss. I would never say here again, the hotel staff completely ruined my trip, and I had to buy spray to guarantee that I got all of the bugs out of my suitcase.

Beat Down Hotel

Would not recommend Tue, Sep 1, 2015
This hotel used to be the it hotel. After staying this time it appears the property is poorly maintained and now it is overpriced for poor service. Staff acts like Whatever They don't care Called about safe in room not working and no one came. I like the size of the room and tub had jets but noisy neighbors woke me up a lot... Trash in stairwell not removed in the 4 days I was there. Maid service terrible after waiting too long they spent few minutes in room but I noticed they spent hr in other rooms..... Needs updating for sure

it's just ok

Would recommend Sun, Aug 23, 2015
Good- location, large room and king size bed, staff friendly just about it, cons- once you get the room you are on your own, forget about housekeeping. Never made beds when we left the room.Found empty beer can probably from last guest. TV are out dated. Hotel has three parking spot, don't move you car if you don't have to bc you will lose you spot and will have to park far. We paid lot more a night than it's was worth. But if you can get it for hundred dollar per night than it might be a good deal.

Terrible Experience, Huge Waste of Money

Would not recommend Fri, Aug 14, 2015
During my stay at Tidelands Caribbean in Ocean City MD, on June 30 - July 3, 2015, I had a terrible experience. I thoroughly regret the huge amount of money I spent on this hotel room, and to this day, my husband is still angry at me for making this reservation. The first issue was with the sleeping arrangements. The description on the booking website said that the room had a sofa sleeper, and allowed us to make the special request of an infant crib. A few days before my trip, I called the hotel directly to confirm those options. The clerk refused to even look up my reservation and said, the room has a sofa bed. And for the crib, you just tell us when you get here that you need it. I argued about that for a while, saying, well how can you guarantee that you will have a crib for us, if I just ask when we get there?, and he said, don't worry, we will have it for you and rushed me off the phone. We arrived at the hotel after a long night of driving to find that there was no crib in the room and no sheets/pillow for the sofa sleeper. We asked the people at the desk. They said they would get us sheets and pillows for the sofa bed, but that we could no longer get a crib because housekeeping had gone home for the day. As my husband carried stuff in from the car and I tried to soothe two crying children who had nowhere to sleep, my husband again asked for the sheets and was told they were coming. Frustrated, I called the front desk and asked again about the crib, and was told that they could get me one. We waited longer. My husband again asked someone for sheets and was finally given them, one hour after asking for them. I called the front desk again and, 45 minutes after I was told they were bringing a crib, they said they would not be able to bring us a crib until tomorrow (which they never did bring). There were several other issues with the room. We had asked to have a room away from the elevator so it would be quiet, and were put right next to a stair well with a broken door. At all hours of the night, people slammed the door, waking us up. This is also a major safety concern since the fire door was not opening and closing properly. We reported this to the maintenance people who said they would fix it. For an hour or so, the door seemed to work properly, then went right back to the slamming. The other safety concern was the TV remote, which was missing the back, exposing the batteries - definitely not safe around kids. On top of all of these issues, the room was a plumbing nightmare. The sink drain was backed up and the water pooled up in the sink every time we used it. The toilet constantly ran. The jets in the bathtub did not work - despite the fact that the room description says jacuzzi tub, I clearly did not get the experience I thought I was paying for. The people working at the front desk were apparently too important to be bothered to actually do their jobs. Every time I wanted to ask for something, they would either ignore me while they had a personal conversation, pretend to be on the phone even though they weren't talking, or just generally make me feel like the extra towels I wanted were such a huge pain to acquire that I should be ashamed of myself for asking. Finally, the thermostat in the room constantly reset the temperature by itself. Multiple times, we adjusted it to a comfortable temperature, only to find it reset itself. All in all, this room was not even close to worth the insane amount of money I threw away on it. I'm extremely disappointed, and will never let anyone I know waste their money here again. It's so sad that with all that potential - an amazing location, great space, potentially very nice rooms - someone has just let it become an overpriced roach motel. Whomever you are, you should feel very embarrassed for having charged so much money for such a poor experience.

Last short trip before my son went to college

Would not recommend Fri, Aug 14, 2015
One of the people in our party got sick with an ear ache, sinus infection and serious cough. I called the front desk 4 times from 8:00 pm until 1:30 am to request 4 additional pillows, so that she could sleep propped up in the bed since that made her the most comfortable and seemed to reduce her coughing spells. I never received the pillows – my request was ignored. Everyone else in our party (3 people) didn’t get much sleep that night. For the first few hours we lay awake listening to her loud coughing and eventually we all gave her our pillows so she could sleep propped up and cough less. We couldn’t sleep with her coughing and didn’t sleep comfortably without pillows. So in other words – we got screwed because hotel staff couldn’t honor a simple request for additional pillows. I am appalled that I paid over $500 for two nights and couldn’t get additional pillows for one night after making the request 4 times by calling front desk staff. The lack of customer service is beyond just an “I’m sorry”.
