Sumptuous quarters in a spectacular, Beaux-Arts setting
Housed in the former headquarters of Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (constructed in 1906), the iconic Hotel Monaco Baltimore hotel immerses guests in the splendors of a bygone, Beaux-Arts era. Its sweeping, three-story lobby showcases original marble floors and Tiffany-stained windows, and eight-foot windows adorn each of the lavish guest rooms. The staff is as friendly as the hotel is magnificent -- no pretension here. Guests enjoy evening wine receptions in the grand living room lobby and thoughtful, if quirky, perks. Be sure to have a "companion goldfish" delivered to your room.
Highlights
- Historic, Parker & Thomas-designed building with authentic Beaux-Arts detail
- Prime location, three blocks from Inner Harbor waterfront and a half-mile from Camden Yards
- Twelve-foot ceilings and eight-foot windows in every guest room

"That's good stuff"
Baller room and mini-bar. Very friendly staff. Over-priced as expected. Bar closes too early. No pool, hot tub or bath in the room. The food was terrible and highly over-priced. But I had a really great time. The building is gorgeous. It's walking distance from a club area. It felt pretty safe.

Baltimore Elegance
The rooms here are spacious - very high ceilings and plenty of room. Not the cheapest place in town, but everything was on par with the price.

There's a great restaurant at the end of East Fort Avenue (south of Federal Hill) - the Wine Market. Fabulous salmon tartare and a great bison tenderloin are indicative of the menu.

Not Great
Ordered room service dinner the first night. 1 hour later they called to say "the chicken salad doesn't look too good". The next night we ordered room service, and it never arrived... Noisy street could be heard on the 8th floor. No bathtub! Only a weird shower that sprayed water all over the floor. Very modern decor, but that was the only plus.

It was as expected
The room was clean and nice. It was in downtown Baltimore close to eateries that are open late night and near the water. I was fairly busy with work so I didn't get a chance to explore the hotel or its amenities much. The restaurant within the hotel is also nice.

A great deal
Although the lobby is historic, all the rooms are new construction. Very tasteful appointments. Kimpton professes to be eco friendly, and indeed the minibar had organic offerings.

One of my favorite hotel stays
The decor of this repurposed historic building (formerly the headquarters of B&O Railroad) is fantastic -- deep jewel shades in the room with excellent fabric selections. Leather wallpaper and marble floors and walls in the bathroom. Very cool. Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent food at the conference I attended and even more excellent food at the B&O Restaurant. With a special discount through Orbitz, who could go wrong?
