Overpriced in a perfect location

As far as room size and comfort is concerned, it's a decent hotel -- on par with an average suburban motel. Our room (a standard room) was quite small, our request for an additional bed for the child has not been passed on to the hotel (so she had to sleep in a crib), and the heating system was a bit outdated -- the powerful fan had to run continuously so it was a bit uncomfortable climate-wise. Complimentary internet was reasonably fast. The main thing about this hotel, of course, is that it is in the middle of Harvard Square, so the location can't be better. The hotel caters to Harvard conference attendees, so the public you meet in the lobby would most likely discuss "mind-boggling interest rate spread" or something of that kind. Also, the hotel's restaurant is so good that people from outside come to dine there. Do not drive to this hotel though -- parking in the hotel garage (the only option) is outrageously expensive. If you rent a car, do yourself a favor and stay in a suburban motel and get a similar room for half the price -- then take the subway to Harvard Sq. and have dinner at this hotel. Note also Avis and Thrifty car rentals are in the hotel garage and across the street, respectively.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Pete's Coffee has the best espresso drinks in town (and that's a lot to say for that area) -- just across the intersection towards Harvard Sq.

excellent staff and location

Pros: Excellent location with easy access to everything. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and tidy. Cons: Dated interior. Uncomfortable bed and terrible pillows! Priced too expensive for the comfort level provided.

Perfect for a Harvard students family

The Charles is located just across the street from Harvard and next to the nicest shopping street in Cambridge so for the family & friends of students at Harvard this is the perfect hotel. The staff is very helpful and accommodating. The rooms are nice but just a bit tired. The beds were comfortable. Room service was very good. I would only go back if I needed to be in the Cambridge area otherwise it is a long, traffic ridden drive to downtown Boston.

Check in disaster at the Charles

There were some issues when I checked in, but the staff finally did the right thing. Arriving at midnight, the hotel apparently lost my reservation from this online company. At least they said they didn't have a record of it. After 40 min of checking, they discovered that the online company had in fact contacted them, but they weren't listening. Or something like that. Then, the desk staff gave me the key to room 408. We went up there, and the room reeked of smoke. At the Charles! Is this hotel turning into a SRO? So we marched back down to the desk (the phone in the room didn't work) and then they gave me a new room, a suite. After that, the hotel met my expectations. I didn't need the suite, but I did need a ready and clean room. I've been reserving with this online company for over a decade at hotels on three continents and have *never* had a hotel lose the reservation and never been placed into a smoke-filled room. The whole point to using this company is that I can prepay, have an ironclad reservation, and a decent room. Charles can do better.

great location - expensive rooms

The service was terrific - the rooms are not modern at all - they are comfortable. The location is everything here, the gym is super and so are the restaurants.

Overpriced in a perfect location

We had a nice time but the double beds were very uncomfortable. The average couples do not sleep in a double bed at home and being forced to sleep in one while on vacation is in no way relaxing! An overpriced hotel like the Charles Hotel should offer queen beds.

Great location for Cambridge visit

We arrived from Portland Maine to see a film festival at Kendell square where our daughter was opening in a film. The hotel was excellent as was the weather. Outside patio dining was a plus and a great healthy breakfast from Henrietta's Table was a good start to the day. The service at Henrietta's was slow however. Otherwise a great atmosphere and super location near the T system, Harvard Yard and Kendell Square. Downtown Boston was great as always.

The Harvard Review

Location is next to Harvard University and is very popular for the college crowd. Many stores, bars and restaurants available and close to transportation/sight seeing tour. For the cost of staying there leaves me a little less satisfied; no coffee pot, no fan in bathroom for example. However, having a TV in the bathroom (in mirror) was a plus.
