Great location if going to Harvard.

If you are visiting Harvard this is the best hotel to stay (also look for the Veritas Hotel). It is located right next to the JFK School of Government, 5 minutes from Harvard Business School and a 3 minute walk from the main Harvard college campus. My wife and I visited the JFK School of Government and were delighted to find that the hotel is right next to the school. We stayed there in the first week of classes for Harvard Students so there were a lot of events in the hotel for students and faculty. It got a bit noisy at night but nothing to worry about if you are in your room. Anyways, highly recommended even if you are not visiting Harvard. Everything is very near and the T-Stop is 5 minutes away walking distance. On the negative, it is a bit on the expensive side but most of the hotels in Boston are quite expensive.

Fourth of July

The Charles Hotel is a beautiful get-away in the heart of a busy college town. I was impressed from the moment we arrived. Thinking we would need to store our luggage because of a very early arrival, we were surprised the hotel would accommodate us at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast at Henrietta's Table should not be missed. It was a bit expensive, but we were glad we decided to try it. (I don't think I have ever eaten better French toast.) We had quite a walk to see the fireworks on the Charles River but easy walking distance to parks, stores, and restaurants made one inconvenience seem minor.

Family School Tour

Traveled with large family. Receptionist could not locate our reservation. It took her 30 minutes to locate our reservation and check us in. Attitude could have been warmer to say the least. Other than that, very happy with the hotel.

Check in disaster at the Charles

There were some issues when I checked in, but the staff finally did the right thing. Arriving at midnight, the hotel apparently lost my reservation from this online company. At least they said they didn't have a record of it. After 40 min of checking, they discovered that the online company had in fact contacted them, but they weren't listening. Or something like that. Then, the desk staff gave me the key to room 408. We went up there, and the room reeked of smoke. At the Charles! Is this hotel turning into a SRO? So we marched back down to the desk (the phone in the room didn't work) and then they gave me a new room, a suite. After that, the hotel met my expectations. I didn't need the suite, but I did need a ready and clean room. I've been reserving with this online company for over a decade at hotels on three continents and have *never* had a hotel lose the reservation and never been placed into a smoke-filled room. The whole point to using this company is that I can prepay, have an ironclad reservation, and a decent room. Charles can do better.

Perfect for a Harvard students family

The Charles is located just across the street from Harvard and next to the nicest shopping street in Cambridge so for the family & friends of students at Harvard this is the perfect hotel. The staff is very helpful and accommodating. The rooms are nice but just a bit tired. The beds were comfortable. Room service was very good. I would only go back if I needed to be in the Cambridge area otherwise it is a long, traffic ridden drive to downtown Boston.

Nice hotel and a good deal if you get bargain rate

Clean and up to date with touches of elegance, and very convenient for business in or near Harvard University. But the normal rate is pretty steep. A discount rate made it a reasonable deal.

Understated Elegance in Harvard Square

The Charles is an interesting mix of a contemporary building with an interior Shaker vibe -- quilts on the walls and beds, simple wood occasional tables, book-lined recesses. But it is anything but stuffy; a sophisticated and well-run oasis in busy Harvard Square. Very convenient to the university and its museums and hospitals. Not inexpensive, but miles above other hotels in Cambridge. Ice rink and two good restaurants, too. Cambridge has a dozen or so very nice boutiques. Nearby Toscana restaurant is excellent. One minor complaint - rang for ice and it never came.
