Downtown boutique hotel celebrates West Indian spirit in Creole City

The St. James Hotel, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member, honors the legend of West Indian immigrant and merchant, Che, who died in 1851 near the hotel. The portal opened by voodoo priestesses to guide his spirit to the Caribbean is said to have helped Civil War soldiers enter death peacefully. The St. James Hotel, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member, harkens to its Caribbean roots with elegant West Indian decor, brick and stone work, ornate iron work and lush plantings. Every room at this boutique hotel is slightly different.

Highlights
  • Boutique hotel with West Indian flair
  • Dipping pool and courtyard
  • Pet friendly up to 30 pounds (fees apply)
Rooms

All 86 rooms and suites are comfortably outfitted with down feather beds and the usual array of in-room perks such as safes, coffee makers and hair dryers. What is not usual is the decor and room layout.  Rooms vary in shape and design with Caribbean details such as painted designs of monkeys, parrots and palm trees.  Marble baths and a cozy feel remind visitors why they chose a small, privately owned hotel over a chain. A pool and fourth floor sun terrace add appeal.

Features

New Orleans Magazine says Cuvee is among the best restaurants in town. The on-site restaurant boasts an impressive wine list and serves nouveau Creole and continental cuisine. A cavernous dining room is warmed by handiwork in wood, leather and iron. Lunch is served Monday to Friday, dinner Monday to Saturday. The hotel will help to arrange local tours.

I've found my New Orleans Homebase

I travel quite a bit, and like smaller, boutique hotels. I found the St. James location to be perfect, just the other side of Canal from the French Quarter, in the CBD. From the moment I walked into the hotel lobby, I was impressed with the decor and the friendliness of the staff. My room, although small, was perfect, although I have to admit that the height of the windows threw me off - almost 5 feet from the ground, but still provided enough light. The amenities were comfortable, and the shower pressure and water temp were great. The hotel was quiet, and I never heard a bit of ambient noise from the other rooms. Christine and the other ladies at the front desk were always there to greet you with a smile and take care of my every need, from calling a cab to giving me walking directions and street car information to recommending a great restaurant for breakfast or dinner. I would not hesitate to recommend the St. James to family and friends, and plan to make this lovely hotel my "go to" when in New Orleans.

Enjoyable 1st trip to New Orleans

There were rats in the courtyard while I was sitting out there. We had no coffee cups or decaf coffee our 4th morning. There was an error on our bill that the desk person could not fix. Had to call my credit card company who contacted the hotel manager to have the bill corrected. The hotel staff was very friendly and got me extra clothes hangers when I asked for them. Coffee and water in the lobby was nice. The beds were very comfortable!

Nice Enough Hotel

The staff were friendly enough but this hotel offers very little in the way of amenities. There is not a crumb of food available on premises - not even a vending machine. I was unprepared for the rain we had one day and asked if there was an umbrella I could borrow, no (not holding it against them just saying don't expect much in the way of services). The room was kept nice and clean and the bed was very comfortable. The curtains shut fully at night and I was able to get a really good night's sleep each night. The decor is a little dated. The nightstands and furniture a little bit dingy and older but not the worst I have seen. The location was very good and convenient to everything I need to do while there for a conference.

Business Trip

My stay was quite comfortable, but the carpet had a large dark red stain in the middle of the floor that was somewhat disturbing. I put a towel over it each day I was there so I wouldn't feel like I was staying in a crime scene. However, the front desk staff were nice and the location was perfect.

Rebecca was the best!

The hotel was in a great spot downtown, very near the french quarter making walking back and forth several times a day easy. Our room was nice, a little dark, but no big deal because we really went to New Orleans to see New Orleans and not hangout in our hotel room. With that said, however, each day after walking or biking around till 5 or so, we headed back to the hotel for a few drinks (we made ourselves with supplies picked up from the corner store) in the hotel's outside area and chatted with another couple staying at the hotel, and it was very pleasant. The real shiner was Rebecca, the front desk attendant that greeted us the day we arrived, and whom we saw everyday when we came back. Rebecca was super helpful, funny, and great spirited making our initial encounter with someone from New Orleans very memorable. Hats off to her!

Great Hotel, Great Location

I was a bit let down when we first got to St. James Hotel... The descriptions and pictures gave the impression that this was a unique, funky and different hotel. I guess due to renovations, the hotel now looks pretty much like any hotel... No interesting voodoo portals or West Indian influences so far as I could see. That said, everything was clean, staff was helpful and pleasant, and the location is fantastic if you are trying to be on that part of town. Never did find the standing pool they spoke of though..

Loved St James Hotel!

This was our first time at St. James Hotel, and we loved it! We like all of the older hotels in New Orleans like Olivier House Hotel and St Peter House, so we had to try St James out! The staff was extremely accomodating and very friendly. Our room was on the fourth floor, so it had the coolest ceilings and just a cozy feel. We loved everything about our room! Complimentary coffee in the morning was a plus! Definitely will stay here again for the Crescent City Classic Spring of 2013!

Thought hotel was dirty and needed a face lift. Dimly lit. My family gives it a higher rating than I. I wouln't go back for the price. My daughter would. Overall a fair place to stay. The plus is that it's right in the Freanch Quarters. So if you are young and came soley to party it's fine.

Not handicapped accessible & Dirty

For a hotel that claims handicap access it is very disturbing. It's on a one way street so my wheelchair ramp went out to the street. The front door. Isn't automated nor are the doors leading to 217 the so called accessible room. The shower had no bench. The shower nozzle couldn't hang up so it dropped soakin the floor. It was a very dirty dingy carpet through out the hallways and room. No handicapped accessible parking. Wheelchair had issues getting through doors even with attendant. If you want a hotel that gives you peace of mind and independence with handicapped accessibility this is not it

Weekend getaway

Overall I think that the quality of the hotel was very average. The two big downers for me related to the hotel were the parking situation where you had to either pay $35 a day to park with the hotel or try to find the difficult task of finding parking the street and the lack of a pool at the hotel. The location was good enough to make it to the french quater and casino in about 5 mins of walking and along with the pricing of the hotel it made up for the lack of amenities of the hotel. This hotel will do if you are looking for a reasonably priced hotel within walking distance of all the main attractions but don't expect to be impressed with the hotel.

About 3 blocks (a little further than I thought) from French quarter. Great, clean room and very dark in the morning with drapes closed (got to sleep in a bit). You pay for what you didn't get

The first room the AC didn't work. They moved us to another one, AC worked excellently, but had no window. That was good for us we were able to sleep in. Park around the block, it is much cheaper than paying almost $40 a night. Staff amazing!

Outdated

The hotel offers a beautiful entry and presents well from outside, but once you reach your room it's a jump back in time. And not in the best way. The drapes and carpet are dark and heavy, the AC felt like it had not been on before we walked in the room and once on, felt like a swamp cooler. Once settled, it's cozy but needs a serious update.

Not terrible but

Not the best...I give it 2 stars because... The maintenance of the room and most public areas was lacking. There were a few repairs that should be done just to make it ok...Most of the staff were friendly. Parking was ok, they don't have a designated lot so it's a shot in the dark.

Great Central location

Location is excellent. Walking distance to museums, riverboats, French Quarter, streetcars and art galleries. Staff was friendly and helpful. Pool small, but clean with a nice tropical garden atmosphere. Room comfortable and clean. The only suggestion I have is to have some kind of small , simple, breakfast items available in the morning to go with the coffee (maybe beignets or croissants?).

Most Horrible

1. The original details have changed. 2. Carpet was a mess, we were afraid to walk barefoot in the room. I couldn’t tell if it was a murder aftermath or what. Red stains everywhere, even in the hallway leading up to our room. 3. The pool was dirty and we would only put our feet into it. No circulation and I can’t imagine the last time it was cleaned. 4. Interior is in need of desperate painting. Holes filled and holes not filled, what a mess. 5 Vomit stains in the stairwells. 6. AC hardly existed and it happened to be 95 or better each day. 7. The staff seemed extremely bothered when you asked questions. Your Bellman and other staff were great. I went to them instead. 8. No coffee maker as promised. Not a huge deal breaker though. 9. If this was supposed to be a 4 star hotel, then the scale should be 1-10 thus a 4 would be about right (sub standard).

Nice Place, just one thing wrong

Everything was great. The staff was nice and the hotel was clean. I liked the amenities and the bed was comfortable and beautiful. the only issue were the fact that I found two cockroaches, one in the hallway and one in my room. That was less than sublime. However, we did not encounter any others in the time that we were there and I am not sure that it is not an isolated incident.

St.James NOLA

The location is great for the value - less than 3 blocks from the French Quarter and walking distance to all of the sights and attractions. Don't plan on swimming because the pool is tiny and gets no sun in the courtyard. Staff was helpful and friendly. We went as a group and some people had very large, spacious rooms with extra seating and I had a tiny room with a bed against the wall and no extra room to move around. Since we paid the same price I asked the staff to move me to a larger room and they did - the first room I had only had a shower stall in the bathroom, no tub. It just depends on what room they give you. Stanley Steamer was there during our stay cleaning the carpets. Good coffee in the lobby but only available in the morning.

New Orleans: Friendly City

It was a pleasant hotel and staff were helpful and friendly...I loved the service and food at the restaurant next to the hotel (they were really great... they anticipated every need...before you asked : water, bread etc..) you felt like Queen for the day...The desk person highly recommended the restaurant and Iwas grateful for the great dining experience...THE WORLD WAR 2 MUSEUM and film is a must see...I walked too much the first day... it would have been better to take the trolley (several available)...the next day I could barely walk and missed some programs at the RE convention ...Great food...friendly ,helpful people

They claim renovated in 2006...

That's only one building. The other one has not been renovated in 30 years. Hall carpet so old and dirty, your feet would stick to it. Almost no "amenities", not even a bathmat, only shampoo and soap. No tissues, only plastic cups - wow can't they spend any money at all? AC works very poorly. Rooms damp and smelly. Not that cheap either

Not Recommended

Overall this was not a great experience. While the staff tried hard (at least some of them) the facility was old and in need of repair and refurbishing. The first room we were given was not cleaned from the last guest and had no windows and a creepy looking bed. The room we stayed in was on the 4th floor and the elevator broke down. They charged a $150 incidental deposit and there were no amenities. Even worse they double charged my debit card so I am now out of $300 waiting to be reimbursed.

Vacation

I would not stay at this hotel again. Lets start with the burlap drapes, bed skirts, and extremely heavy burlap blanket. I asked to have them removed since they were dirty and stained, and made the room extremely stuffy and musty. They looked at me like I had 2 heads. My daughter and I put all of that stuff onto one bed, and shared the other bed. I am sure those items never get cleaned. The bedspreads are too heavy for one person to lift. Lets not forget that the temperature outside is in the 80's, and the air conditioner never made the room comfortable, no matter how much you tried to adjust it. The rug was actually very dirty and moldy. Now for the best part. While getting ready for bed the first nite, I was sitting on the edge of the bed and suddenly a very large waterbed crawls out from under the burlap and into the bathroom. We switched rooms at that time, which was after midnite. After being up since 4:30 am, that was the last thing we wanted to do. We also used the stairs at all times since the elevators have a mind of their own, and open and close randomly. Loved the town, but will never recommend this hotel to anyone.

Good location, lacks amenities

I enjoyed its location in relation to the french quarter, and was a great deal for what it was. The hotel lacked a continental breakfast or a gym but with as much walking you will do and the plethora of great restaurants around the area it wasn't that big of a deal.

We've Had Better

The St. James wasn't a bad hotel. I'll break it down into Pros and Cons. Pros - Location was right off Canal St, near the French Quarter, and was relatively quiet. The room itself was decently sized. Not as small as many NOLA hotel rooms often are. The bathroom was a fair size. The decor was nice enough, and everything appeared clean. Cons - Valet service was very expensive ($30/day) and VERY VERY SLOW. Expect to wait nearly 30 minutes for your car, even in off times of day. The front desk staff wasn't exactly friendly. Each time we encountered them, they acted like we were an annoyance. The walls in the rooms REALLY need a paint job. Nearly every open wall space had big black scuffs all over them (I assume from luggage?) The sink faucets and handles leaked very badly in the bathroom. The mattress was very uncomfortable. It felt old. I could feel every single spring and woke up with my back and neck on fire each morning. The elevator needs repairs in a bad way. It skips the floor you select and goes a floor above. Ex: We stayed on the 3rd floor. So select 3 in the elevator. It goes (slowwwwwly) to floor 4. What? Hit 3 again. It eventually takes you down to your appropriate level. We tested this on other floors, and it works the same on each one. Expect to pay substantial charges over the price of the room, particularly if you have your own car. We stayed two nights and the additional charges for valet, phone, and internet amounted to $95 over the cost of the two nights and taxes ($190). We probably won't stay again. We had much better service and stay at the Maison DuPuy for the same price previously. Or if you can afford it, stay at the Monteleone instead. Both are great.

good location, nothing special

Let's put it this way... I wouldn't stay at this hotel again. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the location was great, but there was nothing fantastic about this place. My room was less than average. The bed was very hard and the pillows were the worst. Although there was space for a mini-fridge, there wasn't one! I found this disappointing since my husband and I had planned on buying some breakfast foods to store in our room to save a little. Worst of all, the room was very dirty. There was blood dripped on a wall... not like anything gory, just something kind of gross. I also watched for six days a earring back on the floor that never seemed to be vacuumed up. I am not snoooty when it comes to hotels. I'm okay with a cheap hotel, if that's what I'm expecting. I just was expecting much more from this place.

St James

The hotel was as picture on their website. Nothing outstanding about it. It was conveniently located in the Central Buisness Disrtict, about two blocks from Harrahs, 2 blocks from the French Quarter and 2 blocks from a couple of Trolly lines. There was no refreigerator in the room. The hotel coffee was good. I never went to the restaraunt. For what I needed it for, (a place to pass out and shower) it was more than adequate.

Disappointed in the hotel but great location

This hotel left much to the imagination. First of all, the room location was terrible. They put us on the 100 hallway in the back of the hotel (separate building) this time, and every little noise could be heard in our room. This included doors slamming, people laughing, kids crying, and the numerous outdoor street noises. We did not sleep well due to the poor building quality. Secondly, the quality of this part of the building was underpar for the other part. The walls were dingy, and the carpet was dirty. The hairdryer was broken, and there were minimal towels and pillows in the room. They would not move our room to the original part (and quiet/clean) of the hotel because we booked it on the internet. It would make sense to give every customer the same quality of ammenities to ensure repeat customers!

Perfect Location. Friendly Staff.

I've stayed in New Orleans on numerous occasions, and I can't recall ever staying at a hotel with a better location. It's directly in the center, and mere blocks away, from: The French Quarter, Bourbon Street, The Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Harrah's, The Riverwalk, etc. The staff was wonderful. Like I said, I've been to NOLA several times, and this was the friendliest and most helpful staff, by far. Any questions that I had were answered knowledgeably and any request that I had was met quickly. I also have to add that I was very impressed with their valet service. I called 10 minutes before I walked down to check out, and when I arrived downstairs, my car was waiting on me. The previous time that I had traveled to New Orleans, I stayed at a hotel on Camp street (one block away), and when my boyfriend and I checked out, we had to wait over two hours for our car! This will always be the hotel that I stay at when I travel to New Orleans in the future.

Close enough to everything

We decided on this because of location, which was perfect, like a short walk to everything and far enough away that you can park your car across the street and not let the valet take it somewhere else. The room was decent, old building, it worked with what it had. The staff was very knowledgable of the area, and also gave you details of where to avoid. Believe me, you will need this info!

Condemn this Hotel

This hotel (if you want to call it that) needs to be bulldozed. Its absolutely horrific and its on the back end of Magazine street. So if you think your in a good location on Magazine street with all the shops your dead wrong. The counter when you check in is sticky, the place smells of mildew, mold, musty decay, and moth balls. You cant even save this trainwreck of hotel with repairs it just needs to be condemned. Run away from this place!

Local charm minus the charm

I've stayed in this hotel twice now because it's two blocks from my company headquarters in the Central Business District, and because I like to try to support independent local businesses. I won't stay here again, though, until they improve the experience. On the positive, sheets and towels have been fresh and clean. But on the negative, they give only 1 bar of soap and a sample packet of Fructis shampoo/conditioner. On this last trip the hallway and room smelled like something had flooded and was not quite dry, and had been doused with a cheap deodorizer. The desk clerk seemed unhappy to be there. This building and location has a lot of potential. I hope the owners and management can give it the charm it deserves.

Could have been better

From checking in to checking out I found there was much lacking at the St James Hotel. The staff was not very welcoming and there was an unclean look to the loby floors and walls. The carpet in the hallways on most of the floors needed a major cleaning, ice machines were out of order, door locks were broken. And I was hearing this very same thing from other guests Considering there were many other hotels in the area I would not recommend staying at the St James to anyone.

New Orleans is supposed to be cool

Tthe city is......the St. James not so much. AC is locked at 75 degees. You cannot override the thermostat. Walking into the room after being out for a couple hours is walking into a hot stuffy room. The room is pleasantly decorated, but not necessarily squeaky clean......the corners in the bathroom had a ditreous buildup that should be taken care of with a little attention to detail. Our room was separated from the main hotel by a pleasant appearing courtyard, but the courtyard smelled of rotting garbage from the adjacent restaurant. The odor is not constant but it it could be a problem for those with sensitive olfactory tendencies. It is not to say the place is all that bad. We would stay there again....it does have it's charm. It is affordable, close to the French Q uarter, Harrad's, and the Riverwalk. . The staff is great. They are friendly and helpful. All in all it was. A fun long weekend.

Mixes feeling on the St. James Hotel

I would recommend the St. James to travelors if they get a good deal. If not, probably go elsewhere. The room was small, the safe didn't work, the shower flooded the bathroom everytime we took a shower, the maid service was not great. (She only came twice in our 4 day stay) not enough towels (especially with the flooding) and we found a few cockroaches. The dipping pool is kinda dirty. I wouldnt get it in. But on the bright side, the staff was really nice. And really, in New Orleans we just needed a place to crash.

The St. James has a great location, and the set up for the rooms are awesome. However, our room smelled like someone died in there, or that it hadn't been aired out in forever. The clock was an hour wrong too, so we figured maybe no one HAD been in the room since Daylight Savings kicked in.

Beautiful on the outside

The hotel was very beautiful on the outside but definitely lacked the "loving-touch" on the inside. We stayed a total of 4 nights & our air conditionaer went out after the first day! Despite numerous complaints, we settled for keeping our door to the hallway open because it was cooler in the halls. Our room was on the 4th floor & the elevator did not work for 2 days. Though the hotel was far from full, they refused to let us have a late check-out (our flight was not until 7pm) but did store our luggage for us. Overall, not a really great visit at all.

Could have been better.

We arrived on a Thursday afternoon to a somewhat warm greeting. The gentleman at the front desk could have done a much better job of greeting us. Our room was warm when we arrived and continued to be that way for our two night stay. My husband had left his wallet in the car and unfortunately did not realize it until our car had been valeted. We called down to the front desk to have it brought back up and was answered by the same very annoyed fron desk man. He also told me to make sure and get everything I needed out of the car in a very rude way. The hotel was nice but in the future I will not return, I need to know i can sleep comfortably during the night.

Out and About

Upon arriving at the St. James, the concierge was very welcoming and immediately gave us some tips and sites to see. We put our things in our room and headed out, not returning until the evening. When we returned and had the opportunity to examine the room, we found that its cleanliness was unacceptable. The shower (no bathtub) had hair in it, as did one of the beds. Additionally, the deadbolt on the door was broken and lamps were not plugged in. Due to the uncleanliness, specifically of the bed, we asked to switch rooms, and did so. The second room was satisfactory, but clearly grimy. All was well though, as we were out early each morning exploring the city--cemeteries, museums, nearby neighborhoods, and returned only to go to sleep. We found it hysterical that the pool is considered an amenity, as it should be described more as a large bird bath. Overall, our experience in New Orleans was wonderful, despite the higher expectations we had for the St. James. It offered a great location and allowed us to experience a wonderful city.

Park at Harrah's parking garage and if you play even penny slots and play for a half hour, your parking is validated for 24 hrs! Get a Rewards card, play slots and you even get to drink for free and your parking is covered! It is hard to find a place to park in New Orleans and most lots charge a minimum of $30.00 a day!

Close to everything

It was close to everything, which was the best part! The hotel was ok, the worst part about it was the housekeeping. We literally had to beg for towels and for someone to come daily and change our sheets. The hotel had charm which was a great feature since we didn't want to stay somewhere "commercial." For the most part it served its purpose: somewhere to sleep, close to everything and New Orleans charm.

Great Location

The St. James is an older property, but quaint. It is in a great location, within walking distance to everything. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. One negative thing was the air condidtioner, although it worked, it didn't work that well at cooling the room. Otherwise our stay there was good.

Excellent Location for the price

The staff was excellent, shot out to Michael who got us anything we wanted. I enjoyed my stay at the St. James and I will be back. My only complaint is too bad there is no continental breakfast. The place makes you feel very comfortable. Its not a fancy place but our room was very clean. My trip was for the Essence Festival and we did not spend a lot of time in the room. If you are looking for a good price, comfort, great location for all venues and cleanlines, I would suggest you check out this hotel. Thanks again to all at The Saint James Hotel in New Orleans.

NEVER AGAIN

Our air conditioning never worked the whole trip (90+ degree NOLA weather)! They had the maintence man come in the room numerous times (per our complaints) and nothing could be done. Instead of admiting that the AC did not work they just carried on with normal procedures. We were not offered to switch rooms, a refund of some sort. The room was not clean, we found a random pair of socks under the bed, the maid service was horrible. We didn't even want full service just empty the trash and provide additional towels was an issue. I would spend the extra money and stay at the Marriott or Sheraton. NEVER AGAIN!

Great Friendly Staff But...

We stayed here during the Essence Music Festival, the hotel is in a great location to everything however needs some work... The wonderful front desk agent [...] upgraded us to a suite upon arrival, however when we got to the room we realized that the AC was barely working. Once we mentioned it they explained that because it was so hot outside and the AC were so old they were doing the best they could. We dealt with it, because we had a powerful ceiling fan in the room that helped, however walking into my room on the second night to see a HUGE waterbug/roach in my bathroom I almost lost it. We tried to switch hotels but everything was sold out we were stuck. As mentioned earlier all of the staff were very friendly and honest, but the owners of this hotel need to get it together. The restaurant was closed the entire time, no business center, no fitness center and you had to fill out a form to have housekeeping come to your room. How tacky! On a positive note, the beds were very comfortable and they did have flat screen TV's in the living room.

BED BUGS - Buyer Beware!!!

Two words: BED BUGS. Large puss filled blisters have developed on my hands, thigh, back and arm. A trip to the Tulane University emergency room resulted in a diagnoses of cellulitis which ultimately lead to me having been prescribed antibiotics.

"Quite Reasonable for Downtown NOLA."

I really do not have any complaints. This was a train trip and the hotel was a $10 cab ride fron the AmTrak Station. I really think the facility is 4 stars but is quite old, and its age should be taken into account. It was reasonably priced and I would stay again. It is within a comfortab;e walking distance of the French Quarter.

Budget trip to New Orleans

This was one of several trips to New Orleans that I have taken in the past 30 years. However, I had not been back since Hurricane Katrina. This time we explored more of the city taking the Canal Street Trolley to it's end. Along the way, we were able to see where some of the flooding had occured that caused massive destruction. New Orleans is coming back slowly. The French Quarter is basically the same as it was not flooded. The St. James Hotel is quaint. The pictures of the swimming pool are misleading. It is more of a wading pool than a swimming pool. Expect to get wet, but there is no way you will be able to swim laps here. The reception area is small. Coffee is served in the AM. The reception desk people are polite and helpful.

Great location!

We came to see the french quarters and experience New Orleans. The hotel was in the best location, close, safe and quiet. This is an older hotel with aging carpeting, but a fun travel theme and classy antique furniture. We chose a standard basic room as we wanted to spend our time visiting New Orleans. The room was very clean and quite spacious. The beds comfortable and the linen spotless. There were not enough towels but came on request. All in all all we were very pleased with the hotel and found it to be completely adequate for our needs. Staff was helpful and mostly friendly. We are however still laughing about the pool, which was the smallest we have ever experienced. Very refreshing though, after a long day of walking and visiting. But tiny! More of a fountain than a pool!

Enjoyed my stay

I was in New Orleans to attend a national conference. St James Hotel was very reasonably priced (when compared the conference hotels) and was within walking distance of the Convention Center. The hotel is also close to the French Quarter and the River Walk. I like small hotels, so this hotel suited me. I didn't spend much time in the hotel (who would when you're in New Orleans), but I found the Hotel staff very customer friendly and helpful. I did miss having a refrigerator in the room. I couln't really bring home leftovers. I'd stay again at St James.

GREAT place to stay

This was my first time visiting New Orleans and I couldn't have had a better stay. The staff is all very friendly and helpful (have a chat with [...], it'll perk up any travel-weary person), it was within a short walking distance to the French Quarter but far enough away from all the noise, the business/art district, and a nice stroll from the trolly cars. The room was great, very spacious; the beds are a little firm, but that's a matter of personal preference. I'll definitely stay here again if I'm lucky enough to go again!

Boutique Hotel

This is a charming small hotel in a historic building just a short walk from the French Quarter. The room was spacious and the decor was both attractive and fun. There were two court yards and one had a small "lounging" pool. June 2011 they are opening an onsite restaurant with additional court yard space. The staff was terrific, the rates were very reasonable, and I had a wonderful time. Tim D. from Maine

Decent, but not Great

This hotel is average. The staff was friendly and the room was clean. The place had recently had some work done, but to a top notch hotel, there is still some work to be done. A better paint job, new bathroom fixtures and new carpet would really go a long way in this place. The best thing about the hotel was it's location. It was close to the French Quarter, Riverwalk and most downtown attractions. We stayed there without a car and were fine getting around the city.

Convenient location

- We visited our son. As this was my first visit to New Orleans, we were doing tourist trips. NO is a reat city, many interesting thing to see. -The hotel has a great location. One can walk everywhere or take a tram a few blocks away. The reception staff was very kind, pleasant and helpful. -However, more attention to the room would be desired, e.g., only provided towels for one person was provided. We stayed there five nights and every day we had to ask for additional towels. Maids took the opened soap but didn't replace it. The fitting bedding was a problem; every time you turned around, the sheet was in the middle of the bed. There was a l smell in the corridor in front of our room, and the place with small pool looked pleasant to seat, but it wasn't usable as it had a terrible smell of cigarets. Still a good value.

The Good, Bad and really ugly.....

The St. James Hotel is in a very good location, but the pool is the size of a hot tube and should not even be allowed to say pool... the A/c was not working very well when we cheched in but it was fixed that day. The lock on the door was broken but was fixed and finally the room was cleaned but no towels were left and the dirty ones were picked up... oh and the elevator was broken one night... over all it was just Ok....

Good Hotel with great charm

Our bed on the first floor was great! Tall and made us feel like royalty. The windows were tall and let in lots of light. The only problem we had was it was a bit loud when we were trying to sleep at night. The hotel staff was very accommodating and jumped at our every request. The location was great, and the breakfast place at the end of the block "The Ruby Slipper" was a go to every morning.

You must buy a pass for the trolley, it is super convenient and take you all the way down St. Charles. Also take the risk and eat at Feast, it's a wonderful restaurant on Julia. Also try Capdeville, it has a rock and roll vibe with really good food and spirits.

Not what you want

We got in late, and were given room 302, which had no closet, no windows, only one of two in-room lamps working, and a bathroom with two of five lights working, although it did have a 45 inch big screen TV. On the way: there was only a dim bulb working in the elevator, which made all the spookier the blood-red stain in the carpet leading...to our room. There was a foul smell in the hall, which we learned later was a result of some unspecified "work" going on...blood removal? Maybe, since the stain was gone by the third day of our stay. On day two, the staff very efficiently and helpfully found us another room which had two windows, a closet, a much smaller TV (the big screen in 302 evidently a payback for the sucky room) and in fact the rest of the stay was pleasant enough. The guy on the desk actually went home to find us a corkscrew since a previous guest had absconded with the hotel's official corkscrew. The cleaning staff was not that interested in fixing minor flaws in our behavior, so every single thing of ours was untouched, and if that caused the room to look like debaucherie centrale, that wasn't their problem. Oh, by the way, part of the decision making process included the free internet and the swimming pool. The internet never worked, although I kind of gave up after one foray to talk to the guy at the desk, and the pool was outside, really small (my probably inaccurate guess: 16 feet by 6 feet by 3 feet deep), and had stuff floating in it. The accurate elements of the presentation: it was quiet, centrally located, the staff was friendly and helpful, the Ruby Slipper a block away was a great breakfast place, and the airport shuttle found us there and back...The coffee in the lobby was dark and robust in the morning, If you make sure not to book room 302 and ask if the elevator light has been replaced, you could do worse than the St.James. Now my wife has another view: she claims she'd stay in the gutter before going back to the Mello J., but I think that's a bit harsh.

Nice location building for reasonable $

Nice room. Friendly personnel. My only complaints are the air conditioned system that did not work well and noise from people speaking outside that woke me up.

Not too impressed with the hotel

I was in town for a work conference. While the staff was quite friendly and the location was great, the room was not comfortable or clean. The sheets did not fit on the bed, the blanket was turned side-ways, and there were awful stains in the bathtub... I would NOT recommend this hotel unless there is more attention to the cleanliness of the place. For $140.00 a night, I expected at least a clean bathroom and sheets that actually fit the bed.

Great Location, not so great hotel.

My partner and I went down to the Big Easy so that I could attend a business meeting, and then we stayed the weekend. While the king sized bed that I had requested was present, it took up basically the entire room. The air conditioning did not work well, the sheets were filthy, and there were lots of articles left in the room from previous guests, i.e. clothing, etc. The ice machine in the building where our room is (there are three separate buildings in this hotel) did not have a functioning ice machine. The hallway carpet was filthy and the walls are thin. Also, despite its advertisement, the attached restaurant is closed for business, which means no room or food service of any kind. On a positive note, the hotel is located a very short walking distance from the French Quarter.

Has its charms, but hygiene is lacking

This hotel is reasonably priced and conveniently located. The employees are friendly and efficient. The rooms have nice, high ceilings and a certain amount of New Orleans flair. The only downside we found was that the room just wasn't that clean. There were hairs all over the place, and when I used a tissue to pick one up from the bathroom floor, all this grime came up with it. Yuck. The (easily visible) baseboard under the desk was covered with dust. I don't want to make it sound worse than it was; we didn't consider packing up our bags and leaving or even calling the front desk to complain (we were only there for a night), but I doubt we'll return.

Our stay at the St. James

This hotel was just lovely and the rate was great. Although the rooms may very, we had a sitting room and a bedroom with a door that opened onto a small courtyard. The bed was really comfortable. The only negative, if you can call it a negative, is that the tv was in the sitting room and couldn't be watched from bed. I just loved the whole atmosphere and felt pampered. The staff was friendly and helpful and the location was nice and quiet, a couple of blocks from the french quarter and the Riverwalk. I am looking forward to returning to this hotel for a few nights stay.

adequate for one night

Checked in at 5:00 p.m. and checked out at 6:00 a.m. the next morning. For having a bed for the night in the CBD, it wasn't too bad. The placed looks a little run down and not where I'd want to spend an extended time. The staff was nice, the bed was confortable, but the bathroom had only one hand towel and one washcloth. We got a good deal, so it was worth the price (less than $100 plus taxes). We spend several nights in New Orleans hotels every year, and i doubt we'll return here unless we can't find something better for the price.

Great Location

St. James Hotel was 2 blocks out of the French Quarter, which made it perfect... close enough to all the action, yet far enough away for a quiet night sleep! Everything was in a short walking distance, the casino was 2 blocks away, as was the Streetcar Lines. I would have liked a mini fridge in the room to keep drinks in and to my disappointment, there was only a pedestal sink in the bathroom and no shelving to put your toiletries. Other than that, I had no other complaints about the room.

Classic modesty

First off, I loved this hotel. It was modesty, and humble, yet you could tell that the place is historical and loved. With that said, It was perfect for a quick enjoyable stay. My issues were that some of the outlets were not working, the lighting in the room was on the dark side (I needed to work) and that the TV/channels were rather pitiful. Either way though, I would definitely stay there again.

Value hotel

We had a good experience at the St. James. We are 24-27 year olds in town for a wedding, and our priorities were: cheap and in the French Quarter. The St. James met both of these. It wasn't an outstanding property, but it was the perfect place to crash after a long night of blues. The shower handle did break while we were there -- but the it still worked, and we weren't there to spend a long time in the room anyway.

Worst Hotel experience EVER

This was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. It was located on a block that did not feel very safe. There were several homeless people that were always hanging out. To begin with the room was tiny and not very clean. Pillows were stained and beds not comfortable. The pool was horrible. It was in a dark courtyard and it was very dirty. The walls were paper thin and we could hear everything in the next room including their alarm which went off at 5:00 AM and did not stop. The fire alarms went off three times. The first two occurred in the middle of the night. The third one was an actual wire on fire. When we called the front desk to see what was going on no one answered the phone. We then had to evacuate for a period of time again with no expanation. The room was not cleaned any of the days that we were there even after multiple requests to have it cleaned. WE requested a wake up call and did not receive it. When we repeatedly complained to the front desk he encouraged us to write to management since he agreed with all our complaints but management would do nothing. This experience was so disappointing. We had looked forward to this hotel based on the website and it was far different than promised. I would never consider staying in this hotel again.

Good valuue

While an older building, it was nicely kept and fairly quiet. The room was comfortable and clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was excellent. The lack of amenities was not an issue as it helped keep the price down. The only negative was the unknown additional fees upon check-in.

Great location, very European in feel.

Just 3 blocks from Canal Street and the French Quarter, so quieter, yet close enough to get to everything. Close to the Ferry to Algiers, RiverWalk and the St. Charles Street car that will take you to the Garden District, and Audubon Park and Zoo. Some of the Staff was excellent, others just so-so, but very accomodating and they did cut out the local "extra" charge since they missed our room service two days....

Not Great.

We guess for the price of the St. James Hotel that we should not have thought that it was going to be the best or have many amenities, but we did expect it to be clean and accomodating per a friend's recommendation. When we got there in the late afternoon and were assigned our room, it was not clean with smashed raisins on the carpet, wine tops on the bathroom floor and the sheets did not seem to be clean when we got into bed that night. The light in the entry was out and the room was dark to begin with. The soap, shampoo, etc had not been replinished and the hair dryer was broken. The coffee supplies in our room had never been replenished or cleaned (coffee brewed left in the coffee pot). After three times of telling the front desk about these things, they finally fixed the light in the entry and replenished the coffee and bathroom supplies on the morning that we were departing while we were at breakfast (we were there for three nights and two full days). There was no newspaper in the lobby, yet they did have freshly brewed coffee each morning which was appreciated. The front desk tried calling a taxi for us the final night of our stay because it was raining, but none ever showed up so we just went ahead and walked (that was okay because we love to walk, even in the rain). Cuvee, the great restaurant next door, is a big drawing point in the advertising for the St. James but it had closed down. Nonetheless, we found great places to eat in the Square. No refrigerator in the room or on the floor to store water, left overs, etc. The ice machine on our floor was broken. The location of the St. James Hotel was wonderful and the people who worked there were very nice. Isaac, in particular, did recommend some wonderful places to eat and mapped out for us where we wanted to go. We might possibly recommend the St. James to a friend if we were certain some improvements had been made.

When we first arrived, our friend took us to Domilises where we got a wonderful po boy. Grand Isle (wonderful dinner) and The Ruby Slipper (great breakfast) were very close to our hotel and were delicious with great service! We enjoyed eating a Coop's, grabbing beignets at Cafe Du Monde, and dinner at some little place at the bottom of a hotel on Bourbon Street. We wanted to go to Gallatoire's our last night but could not get the taxi, so we will have to go there on our next visit. Other than the food, the St. Louis Cathedral is beautiful and the happenings and great music in the Square were very fun and entertaining!

Almost Decent Hotel

The hotel looked good and was in a perfect spot but we had 5 incidents happen. 1) The toilet was clogged the first night we arrived. They unclogged it but it clogged back up again. They brought US a plunger to plunge it ourselves and after we discovered the plunger was broken, we asked the front desk to do it. Needless to say, he couldnt get it either so we had to pack up and switch rooms on NYE evening. Ah 2) The door in the new room was broken so we had to wait for someone 3) We found a cockroach in the bathroom 4) There was no mattress pad on the bed 5) The maids did not come the first day- and there was no soap in the room.

Not as good as it looks, not bad either.

The Staff was great. If some of the rooms had balconies, they weren't really overlooking anything. Our room had two beds that you would have expected in Motel 3. The location was convenient to the Superdome and Bourban Street, but a walk to both. For the price, probably would choose another next time.

Somewhat disappointing

The lobby is exceptionally small and tight making desk activities difficult. Not especially clean (carpets and in general). The first day I left a list of things needing attention - burned out bulbs replaced, additional hangers and more towels. All were taken care of. After that I could not get the variety of towels I requested. A small detail but a frustrating one. The location of St. James Hotel was good for my convention activities as well as walking distance from lots of great food, the French Quarter and everything I wanted to do. At check in I was told I would have additional charges per day of $2.95 for the room safe and $4.95 for internet access, neither of which I intended to use. I was told that in booking through [...]those charges were not covered but ultimately the hotel graciously agreed to waive the charges.

No late check out? $200 a night?

When we first arrived the party in front of us was told that their reservation was not coming up. It took over 30 minutes to clear it up and I had to wait because there was only one person working the front desk and it was Halloween weekend!!! What!? Not only that, it was awkward and freaked the other party out because its Halloween in New Orleans and everything is booked up. We paid for a $75 a night hotel the night before and got a late check out, no problem but not somewhere where I pay $200 a night and we survived Halloween in New Orleans the night before? What!?On the plus side it really is a beautiful, cool hotel close to everything. We caught the street car down to the quarter in no time. And [...] is the man!!! If you need something done, he will get it done!!! He should totally be promoted!!! He took care of everything we needed while waiting 30 min from our car, directions, and all the paper worked signed just needed the key tot the room.

Nice, clean, minimal amenities.

Arrived to check in and there is no parking. Across the street for $15 a night, or use hotel valet, for $25. Check was quick and easy, no wait. The room was clean, but the only view I had was of the partnering building about 15 ft away. Clean, quiet. Would have liked to see the price a little lower. But over all a decent experience.

Affordable & friendly, comfortable hotel

The staff were very approachable and informative. This is a friendly city and the experience starts from the minute you check in. The building is pure New Orleans with quaint stone paved courtyards, but the room was far larger (and cleaner) than a more expensive hotel I've stayed in within the French Quarter. The location is perfect - about ten minutes walk from the restaurants of the French Quarter, a little more to the waterfront, Basilica and the Bourbon Street craziness.

Good Value Hotel

Well situated boutique hotel with pleasant staff. Relatively few amenities (coffee and Danish in lobby for breakfast) but room was clean, cleaned each day, TV and coffee maker in room. In between the Business district and the French Quarter. [...]

Saint James Hotel

Staff was very helpful with restaurant and sightseeing suggestions, directions to hot spots, assisting with securing transportation and printing of travel documents. Great location, within walking distance from the Convention Center, at the edge of the French Quarters and 10 minutes walking distance from Bourbon Street! And for about $100/night.

Very much less than acceptable!

We were highly disappointed in the lack of cleaning staff. We left a requset for service that was ignored; after confronting the desk service was promised within a hour that never showed. We were to the point where we had to go back to the deskfor a 3rd time to get towels and coffee in order to bathe and have morning coffee.

did not live up to name

The hotel room was clean. However the toilet was broken, the shower head did not work properly, we were only given one set of towels. The air conditioning turned off when we left so when we would return the room was 80 plus and took 20 min to cool off. We decided to go swimming one morning and the so called pool was a garden fountain about 8 feet wide four feet long and four feet deep. It was green with algae-- seriously we were expecting to koi fish as this looked like a courtyard fish pond. Very dissappointed with hotel although front desk service was nice.

An OK place - you get what you pay for

I was there to play in a bridge tournament. On check-in there were sunflower seeds on the bathroom floor - but the housekeeeping was fine otherwise. The location was fine. The AC system was strange and not user-friendly - vent blew right toward the beds. It is an old hotel in decent shape and was more or less worth the price I paid. But my roommate got a better deal at a much nicer place for the period after I left.

Mr. B's Bistro is probably one of the better restaurants and fairly priced. K-Pauls's is a tourist rip-off. BonTon is across the street and overpriced.

Hotel Stay for 1 night

The experience was fine. Like everyone says, the whole "hidden fees" aren't really so hidden, but they are at the same time. If you want your car parked with them, they charge you 28 dollars a night. Plus they add on the 2.96+4.95 for services you won't use.

Cute and just right

This place was really cute. Me and my partner are from Miami so it was a nice experience to stay here. It set the tone for the entire trip. The only downside is that the pool was more like a wishing pond and it wasn't maintained. It would have been nice to have a clean big pool since it was very humid outside. Also, they don't have a continental breakfast.Location was fine. Either take a cab or rent bicycles because it is a very good walk to places. Rent a bicycle from [...]. He was really nice. Overall, I give this hotel a 3 only because of tiny pool and no continental breakfast. I've stayed at tons of hotels so a 3 is very good in my book. I would definitely recommend this place to a couple that plans to be hitting the town.

Sweet hotel with old world charm

If you want to experience old world charm of New Orleans, then this is the place for you. Clean but in need of an update here and there, it is classic old world style, with wonderful service and beautiful furnishings, I loved it! Great location, just blocks from EVERYTHING!

Terrible Experience

We stayed at the St. James Hotel as it was rated a 4 star on [...]. The pictures depicted a very cozy and intimate setting. When we arrived at the hotel, parking was scarce and we waited about 15 minutes for the one reception attendant to finish with a previous guest. The elevator (singular) was not working and we had to wait for approximately half an hour for the same reception attendant to fix it while we looked at the algae infested pool, which was about the size of a bath tub. If you look at the St. James website it depicts two individuls sitting in what looks to be a hot tub, this is in fact the pool. Our room was very small, and not up to date. The shower was corroded, and there were rings in the tub. We had a King bed, which had dusty covers, and the pillowcases smelled like they had been left in the washer too long. Needless to say we spent very little time in our room, the location was relatively close to Bourbon Street, however seemed a little sketchy at night. I will say that the staff was very polite, and that the convenience of being in the heart of NO was great. For a few dollars more you are considerably better off staying at a major chain of hotels. I regret passing up on the JW Marriott and Sheraton at about the same price point for the idea of a quaint feeling. This hotel should be rated at no more than a 2.5 star, I would liken it to an old La Quinta hotel/motel.

Wouldn't stay again!

We were in town for the Essence Music Festival. The location was ok. The Housekeeping was not good at all. We had to wait for towels and ask for our room to be cleaned daily. The doorman and front desk staff were GREAT! This could be a very good hotel with a few modifications or remodeling.

St. James Hotel

The hotel was old and quaint. The room was nice, I would say average. We were in New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival. The Hotel was in walking distance from the Superdome where the event was held. There was a stench where the pool was located. There was moss growing and the water in the pool was dirty. The land scaping around the pool and court yard was hurrendous. The staff was extremely nice.

Less than I expected

I will not stay at the St. James Hotel again. The place smelled of mold and dirt. There was an issue with towels. I continually had to ask for towels and was even told they won't have any until the morning. Also the air conditioner broke and our rooms never got cooler than 78 degrees. Can you believe that in New Orleans in summer. The pool actually looks like a pond. They should add fish to it. I wanted to try a quaint hotel but in the future I will stick with the national chains where I know the hotel will be clean and at least the air conditioner works. I felt as if they were having trouble staying in business.

Not 4 stars

About 5 of us checked into rooms at this hotel. The ac didn't work in some of them and the shower curtains were too short in all of them. There was water everywhere on the floor. The staff was not profession and dismissive. When I say dismissive, they would say "ohh we will send someone up to your room" many of us were told that and not one of us ever saw a repair man. This hotel is like playing a slot machine. You never know what your getting.

Mixed Bag

The location of the St. James was great for both the business and leisure locations of NOLA. The evening staff was friendly and helpful. The morning staff was markedly unfriendly. Air conditioning was not adequate for NOLA in the summer; also, the a/c vent in the bathroom leaked continuously. Dollar for dollar value was good.

Good price and people, bad rooms.

Friendly staff and low rate however the room was incredibly small (I have stayed in larger at the budget inn) and the pool looked more like a swamp. The room had a musk smell to it and our view was a brick wall and alleyway. The carpet also had multiple stains and we didn't even have a refrigerator to keep sodas cold. The bathroom was small and the tub was microscopic. Also the ice machine is on the second floor just to let anyone know before you go on a scavenger hunt looking for it.

Meh...

the rooms were clean and the staff was friendly. don't get excited about complimentary breakfast...coffee canisters and rock hard muffins...good morning!(seriously, thats all). oh, and the pool is a fountain-sized joke. we laughed a lot because there were "no diving" signs and there is no way a sane person would dive in the several inches available for swimming. also, you may get a deal on the room, but they get you on the parking and internet charges (100 bucks extra at the end of our stay) however, quiet area, close to just about anything you want, and friendly staff. not bad, but if you are a hotel freak, look elsewhere.

Nice hotel, but no pool

Nice location, near vieux carre but a few streets away from the craziness. Staff was very pleasant, extra effort to help at every opportunity. There is no pool, Orbitz is incorrect. Room was plush, clean, bed very comfy. Our room was not on the street, so I don't know if balconies were accessible or an asset; our window was painted shut, so not possible to get fresh air. But AC worked fine. Staff at associated restaurant La Cuvee was snitty, so we went elsewhere. I'd go back: nice people, good location, reasonable price.

Excellent Stay!

This was our first trip to New Orleans and the St. James hotel was fantastic. The room was standard - nothing overwhelming nice but it had everything we needed: bed, bathroom, TV, good A/C. The location is fantastic. Within a short walking distance to the river front, 5 to 10 minutes from Bourbon street, 10 to 15 minutes from Jackson Square, and within 2 minutes of the St. Charles street car. It is close enough to be able to walk to most places, but far enough that noise was not a problem.

unbeatable location for the price

We spent our time in the French Quarter and riverfront. The hotel was convenient to both. We were able to get a ground floor room, which is very, very convenient. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. There was no pool but the weather was a little cool anyway. The hotel charges $28 a night for parking. Also they charge a $10 a night telephone and internet fee that is charged whether you use it or not; you can't opt out The parking is a rip off since there is a lot on the next corner that charges $15 a night. We would use the St James again!!!!!

Good location - Few downfalls

We got in late the first night so they did not have a non-smoking room available for us that night. The guy at the front desk was extremely friendly and said that we could switch rooms the next morning. When we called down to inquire about switching the room the woman was very nasty ([...]). We had spoken to her a few times throughout the trip and she was cold and unfriendly. The last day there as we were getting ready we saw a HUGE roach running around the room. SOOOOOOOOO GROSS! This hotel is conveinently located between the warehouse district and the French Quarter. BUT, that's about all it has going for it. It was pretty inexpensive, but I'm certain you could find similarly-located, cleaner, nicer hotels for the same or less. Also, when looking at the price of the hotel, be sure to factor in a daily charge for wireless Internet and use of a safe, regardless of whether you use either. My biggest complaint is that it just wasn't clean. Also, when we went to check out, the desk clerk was super rude. When we came back to pick up our bags and call a cab for the airport, her boss was at the desk, too, and she was all sweetness and light. Very annoying. In a city of such amazing hospitality, there is no sense in paying to experience that kind of behavior.

Great stay for the price but....

We couldn't have been any happier with our stay at the St. James Hotel. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean rooms, lots of hot water. The bed was a bit lumpy but when you're exhausted from seeing "Nawlins" it didn't matter too much. Even though the hotel is not dead center in the French Quarter it is only a five minute walk there or you can turn left out of the hotel for some of the finest dining and boutique shopping the area has to offer.

HOTEL CHARMS VISITER ON BUSINESS

I took a chance at an unknown hotel and was pleasantly surprised..close to to all the action of the quarter but nice and quiet, less traffic, very turn of the century charm and tranquil. I told the staff that I had a poor seat on my plane trip.[...] once agin put me in a rear seat right across from the restroom..so the nice receptionist handpicked a nice corner room with a pleasant view. The danish pastries and coffee in the lobby in the morning was also a nice surprise. I will stay here agin. I may even bring my dog since they allow small pets..thats a rarity these days!

Great for getaway

Only complaint we had was slow service getting more towels to our room. Other than that, everything was wonderful. The room was very clean and spacious. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. It is worth paying for the valet parking, because the hotel is located close to the Superdome and the French Quarter. They allow you to keep your vehecle in the valet even after you check out, which saves on other parking fees as you sight see. My family and I will be booking there again when we stay over-night in New Orleans.

Entertainment tip: Long walk from hotel

If you are going to an event at the Superdome or the Hornets Arena, this hotel is the perfect place to stay to avoid the price of parking there. If you leave early enough, you are able to stop and grab a bite to eat along the way, then continue to the event. Taxis back to the hotel are rather cheap, so if you are too tired to walk back to the hotel, they line up along this stretch of road after the event.

Not as billed

The location is ok, but this place is really on it's last legs and the website is frankly, a con. It needs a complete overhaul in terms of decoration and service. The staff are friendly but clearly have been abandoned by their management. It is being run on a shoestring. They ran out of toothpaste and paper cups for coffee in the room. Whoever is in charge of supplies is a disgrace. The hotel could do so much better if more attention were paid to it and there was a reasonable investment made in its future. I will certainly not ever stay here again, and I love the small-hotel vibe of New Orleans.

Not Quite What It Seemed

The hotel staff were wonderful and very informative. The bed sheets were not fitted and often came off during the night and made sleeping a bit challenging. The absence of a clock was noticable. The trash collecting at 3 AM was loud and prolonged. The hallway noise was very noticable as well. Only certain rooms had balconies. The continental breakfast was present but not well stocked.

Central location for a decent price

The hotel is really charming, with a cute lobby, and great front desk help. The rooms are small, but comfortable enough with nice bathrooms. The location was absolutely great, just a 5 minute walk into the French Quarter, and a few blocks away from the trolley. Only complaints are that it feels a little gloomy in the hotel, and it could be a bit cleaner in the rooms. Overall, for the price: you're getting your money's worth in a great city.

Good Location, lacking otherwise

The Hotel was easy to find, and in a good location for experiencing our first time to New Orleans/Mardi Gras weekend. However, the rooms were small, and upon check-in were told that unless we requested services, our room would not be serviced by the housekeepers. Yet we were also told we were being charged additional fees of about 9$ for services, so that didn't make sense. On our second to last night we discovered a cockroach in our room, and immediately told the front desk. [...]

Pretty nice place!!

The hotel was in a good location, besides being on the West side of Canal Street opposite of the French Quarter, which meant during Mardi Gras that we were trapped by the parade and could not get over there. We learned to deal, and when the parades were not going on, it was an easy 5-10 minute walk to the Quarter, or $5 cab ride back when your feet hurt at 5am. The check in was easy, and they left us alone when we had the do not disturb sign up. Housekeeping even called on our 3rd day since they had not gone in to give us new towels. We left ours outside our door and were given new towels, soaps, and garbage bag. That was very proactive of them. With the exception of one female employee at the front desk who was far from friendly or even polite, we had great service and were always waved to when heading up to our room. The insulation to the hallways is pretty thin, we could hear every word people were saying when they walked by, but I guess you can expect that with a hotel with such history. The room was spacious and clean, although the handicapped/Europeans style walk in shower we got stuck with soaked the floor everytime we showered, it wasnt a deal breaker and we were overall very happy with the stay. The $2.95 safe fee and $4.95 WiFi that is charged every day to every rooms is irritating when we used neither, but its whatever, overall we had a great time and would return to St. James

ROACH MOTEL!

Worst hotel experience ever! DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL TO ANYONE...HOSTEL WOULD PROBABLY BE BETTER. [...] This was little better than a roach motel. No fitness center, no hot tub. When I closed the room door, discovered that you could see the hallway through a gap between the door and the moulding. Found a cigarette in our room (so room wasn't thoroughly cleaned after last guest), returned to room expecting nicely made beds and clean bathroom, but all we got was new towels. Refrigerator in room was missing. WORST OF ALL: WE DISCOVERED A ROACH SHARING THE ROOM WITH US AND WHEN WE CALLED THE FRONT DESK TO COME TAKE CARE OF IT, WE WERE TOLD WE WOULD HAVE TO WAIT AND ALSO THAT IT'S NOT UNUSUAL TO FIND BUGS IN THE SOUTH...GREAT, SO A ROACH MAY JUST CRAWL ACROSS MY FACE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND THE HOTEL WON'T CONSIDER THIS ANYTHING UNUSUAL!!! Loved my stay, not for everyone.

The Saint James is a historic hotel 3 blocks east of Canal Street. It was quiet and lovely. The staff was kind and personal. From the gas lamps out front to the furniture and bedding in the room everything was comfortable, elegant, and exuded the warmth we were looking for in a French Quarter stay. I particularly appreciated how quiet everything was. My only real complaint was that there was no where to get a cup of fresh coffee in a real mug/cup withing blocks of the hotel. My husband did not appreciate the skylight in our room. There were no black out curtains available on the skylight and under the full moon our room was moderately illuminated all night. We were in room 305. If you do not like skylights ask at the lobby. The Saint James is not new, does not have all of the amenities of 4 and 5 star hotels, does not have a huge staff. None of these things bothered me at all. Some guests were irate. As long as you know what you are booking you should enjoy your experience. If consistency is your main goal there are numerous chain hotels in the district. We would definitely recommend the Saint James.

It is what it is...

The hotel served it's purpose. We wanted something outside the French Quarter to get away from the noise. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is just old and needs some repairs. For instance, one of our curtains was missing, the hinge on the dresser had broken off, the maid service was not that great, lighting was dim. With all that being said, we did not expect too much because all we were looking for was a quiet room away from the craziness. It suited us just fine. Much like Vegas, if you just need a place to sleep, this hotel is good enough for that.

St. James December

I was here to sight-see for a few days. It was a great location between the French Quarter and the Garden District as well as being a short walk from all of the street car lines. Staff was very nice and helpful. The room was clean and absolutely gorgeous. I couldn't have asked for a better hotel. The only issues I had were that I couldn't find the ice machine or a snack machine for those quick bites to eat before going exploring.

Great hotel: Not, so great game!

Me and my family went to New Orleans 12/17/09 to attend the SAINTS/COWBOYS game.We were very satisfied with our stay at St. James Hotel. I will say I have stayed in fancier hotels. But, none would compare to the nice and friendly staff at the St. James Hotel. The rooms and beds were comfortable, also.We had a great time in New Orleans. Not so great at the game. Saints 17- Cowboys 24. Come on guys you lost to the Cowboys!!! We are better than that. "GO SAINTS"

Good Location..

We travel to New Orleans twice a year and have become very familiar with the City. The location of the St.James is really nice, short walk to the French Quarter,we even walked to the WWII Museum. Our room was very small but that can be expected with older buildings. This was only a three day vacation the size of the room would be an issue for a longer stay. The staff, all but one, were very friendly and helpful. They have a nice idea using feather beds but really need to use sheets that will stay tucked in!!! We will go back to New Orleans but probably would not stay here again.

Not a 4 Star hotel.

I guess I need to move up to lower end 5 star hotels to get what I think of as true 4 star quality. I chose the hotel for it's historic nature [...]; I expected some pride in ownership. There was a ceramic dish in the bathroom with a broken lid and hair in it. There was hair on the tub. There weren't enough hangers. We asked to get a cab and were told it would be an hour. Good hotels have cabs available for their guests. The room we were given did have a private balconey but the planters were full of cigarette butts. I won't be staying at the St. James again.

Great location, quiet rooms

This is a great location, but the hotel has a few kinks to work out. One day our room didn't receive maid service. There was no surface near or on the sink for personal items. The towel count was inconsistent from day to day. I needed to request a new iron because the one provided was broken. We received only shampoo, soap and lotion, but no conditioner or shower cap, which are usually standard. However, the staff was very friendly and accomodating, and the bell service was very helpful.

Whach out !!

Upon arrival the reception lady wanted us to sign a form where by we where consenting to pay extra charge daily for internet cable availibility and two other different service all of whicht we did not want. After insisting telling me it was mandatory, I clearly said that ''I will not sign'' '' this was not part of our deal with [...]'' ''clearly no''and so on....I had to take a firm stand and clearly the lady seems to us furious. We did not like this experience. All of the 5 days (exept monday morning at 4:00 AM before departure)we where entitled to 2 or 3 minutes of warm water when showering after that was icy cold !!! We reported this situation 2 times...they promised to fix the problem but to no avail....very very frustrating. We do not recommend this hotel. But New Orleans is very lively, special and unique...what a good time we had...music & music: blues jazz, dixieland, creole jazz. rock jazz. Satisfied

My partner and I stayed at the St. James from Thursday afternoon until Sunday morning; it was our first visit to NOLA. The hotel itself was nothing really special--the rooms were nice but dark and kind of noisy. We were in room 209 which was right across from the elevator and the ice machine--not the best location in the place. The pool is TINY and should actually be called a pond and they do not offer continental breakfast. The bright spots were the staff (VERY friendly and helpful) and the location. Technically, the St. James is located in the Central Business District, but it is only about 2 city blocks from the start of the French Quarter and right around the corner from Mothers. Also, a bonus was that Chuck's bar was kitty corner and it proved to be a great little dive bar to watch the Saints game on Sunday (also open "d*** near 24 hours" which we loved!) All in all, I would be happy to stay at this hotel the next time we visit NOLA. The benefits outweighed the drawbacks.

Look elsewhere

The restaurant is a jacket and tie place, just a heads up on that one. THE BAD: The "pool" is better described as a 5 x 12 child's pool and the area it is in smelt much like rotting garbage, put it this way I open the door looked laughed then inhaled through my nose and closed the door as fast as possible. The room had no ceiling fan so it gets stuffy very quickly. The windows could not be opened, they were nailed shut no help their. As for lighting in the room, you get a standing lamp on the switch and small desk light and medium lamp on the bed table, all with weak bulbs, so forget reading. As for the bath room the shower head is lower than usual caused us to duck when showering, and to make it worse the pressure was very low so it took longer, and to make it all worse the showers were warm at best for a few minutes then went to cold. I can also say this 2 of us left with sinus issues every time we left the room, and I only get agitated by long haired cats and the other is allergic to mold, so who knows what was getting us both. More importantly there is NO PROVIDED PARKING!!! with a few options park it your self somewhere of 15 or more dollars a night or the valet which takes your car 2 blocks away (I asked) and charges 25 dollars plus 3 dollars tax per 24 hours. As for the extra "BS" charges at check out a safe fee of 2.95 per night is added but not listed here! THE GOOD: Next visit to New Orleans ... new place no question about that.

I was there for a convention and in that sense the location was convenient. The staff were quite friendly. The room they gave me though left a lot to be desired. It was at the front of the hotel. It smelt musty but the windows did not open so I could not air it out. The bed was quite uncomfortable and sunken in the middle. There was no refrigerator. However, the worst thing was that the parking garage across the streets gate would squeak open and close all night long and it felt like the windows were open it was so loud. Also anytime a large vehicle drove by the whole room vibrated! This was not a comfortable place to stay.

Back to the past at the St. James

We stayed at two hotels, one was an upscale well known chain. Though it was very nice, it is pretty much the same in any city. The St. James was very unique, full of charm. All of the staff were friendly, cheerful and very helpful. The Bellman even had a "ghost story" for us, which added to the ambiance. It is a little rough around the edges, but has two great restraunts acrossw the street and next door. We are going to bring our kids and visit again. Hopefully the Deluxe or family type room is a little larger, but we were very comfortable and enjoyed outselves.

The famous 'Mothers' resaurant is right around the corner. It is a short walk to Canal St. There are two well known local favorite restraunts just steps away........Cuvee and BonTon.

Wonderful experience

The location was very nice, just outside the french quarter. Our room was a good size, clean and comfortable with one exception. The cooling system is tied to a motion detector and so it doesn't run when you are out of the room. When it was warm (80+) this would result in returning to a room that was around 75 or 77 degrees. That is a little warm for me. When the system did turn on it cooled down in a half hour or so, but it was a little annoying.

st. james hotel--magazine st. nola

I visit New Orleans very frequently & enjoy trying out different hotels, however, there were a lot of events going on this weekend in the city so my choices were rather limited. I went ahead and booked this hotel even though I thought the price was pretty high ($220 per night!!!) On top of that--valet parking is $30 and i was charged $5 for an internet fee whenever the internet was never used. I'm used to staying at 'the W' which isn't exacly cheap either but at least it's always clean and the people would bend over backwards for you. They do not act like they're swamped at the front desk and will kindly answer any questions//make suggestions. The location for the St. James is not bad--just a few blocks off of canal. I was disappointed because the room was really small & not cleaned at all. They had two packs of empty cigarettes (from the previous guests) near the window when i specifically booked a nonsmoking room. It didn't smell clean at all, either. But the decor is nice, I suppose--just needs dusting--i'm not sure if that's the theme they're going for though. Love the city--just wouldn't stay here again.

Quiet among the giants

This hotel is nestled down among some big, name-brand hotels. You might not notice it if you were not already going there, but it is well-worth the search. While located in the business district slightly off of Poydras, one of the main thoroughfares, it is within walking distance of Jackson Square and the French Quarter. Yet, at night, it is quiet, peaceful, and very comfortable. My room even had an accessible and lovely secluded bacony adjoining it. The staff at the desk and the valet service were top-notch. I will go back soon and often.
