Historic hotel offers central French Quarter location, courtyard

Brush up on your New Orleans history at this historic inn. The hotel was built in the 1800s for Baron and Baroness Joseph Xavier de Pontalba, and it was the government house when Louisiana was still a French colony. Today's budget-minded tourists can appreciate the proximity to the party without paying Bourbon Street prices. The hotel's staff is eager to make reservations and help with vacation planning.

Highlights

So close to good

The front desk staff is very friendly, but seemingly helpless to correct much of anything. Housekeeping services were apparently completely absent on Saturday, only marginally available on Sunday, and somewhat improved on Monday. We were unable to get towels on Saturday nor clean towels on Sunday. The front desk person told us on Sunday that they "didn't have any towels", but was able to produce some around four hours later. Room was not vacumned on Sunday and only marginally cleaned at other times. A maid knocked on our door at o945 on Tuesday to inform us that she had to clean the room right then or not at all. Check-out time is 1100 and we weren't checking out anyway. The front desk did see to it that that announcement was rescinded.

Bring Lysol & Flip Flops!

This was the most unclean hotel we've ever stayed at. There was hair in the shower, on the bathroom floor, and standing water around the shower and toilet from a long-standing leak. There was also an obvious break in the ceiling above us, which was scary. The hotel is cobbled together, so you feel totally stranded in an out of the way corrider with no one within sight for safety. This was apparently a warehouse at one time with metal reinforcement along the wall. last, there was a surprise upcharge for phone and internet use which we did not use but visitors are required to pay for.

Around the corner is Johnny's Po Boys - a real southern breakfast available and po boy sandwiches that are out of this world. Try the fried shrimp po-boy "dressed" (lettuce, tomato, mayo), or the roast beef. Johnny's closes about 4 in the afternoon, so give them a try for breakfast or lunch. The best hamburger in New Orleans is Port of Call, or Yo Mama's on St Peter Street (bar and grill).

Nasty Hotel

Decent staff- Hard, uncomfortable beds, cockroaches in the bathroom, broken shower valve- had to take a scalding hot shower. Did not offer any discount or relief for very uncomfortable stay.

Would NOT Stay Here Again...

OK, so the location is fantastic and the hotel itself is quaint...you'll be within walking distance of Bourbon Street, the French Market, and Riverwalk but the hotel is not that good. Honorable mention must be given to Andre who stored our bags for us and gave us good tips as far as where to eat, [...] was a true professional and had a great demeanor all of the time, we truly felt welcomed. The rest of the staff was OK...no towels during the day (they were being washed???)...I have never stayed in a place where you do not have towels. The room had no window, the TV was ancient (apparently the plasma or LCD they had had long since broken as the bracket was still on the wall). The room did not have storage space for our clothes so we were stuck living out of our suitcases, the door was hard to open and close (we had to slam it each time so that it would shut properly), and the safe did not work as confirmed by the front desk. We stayed in room 304, take my advice, and if you plan on staying here DO NOT accept this room.

Great location, dheap and dirty

This hotel has been described before as dirty, hard beds, however, excellent location and cheap. Someone needs to close the hotel and spend 30 days stripping, cleaning and painting the hotel.

Do not book!

We decided on The Historic French Market Inn because we thought it was a good value, and had a good location. The location was the best part. It's just a short distance from Bourbon Street, and all other typical New Orleans destinations. Other than that it was horrible. We didn't want to be in the room because it was soo dirty. First the room did not have a window, which made it creepy. The bathroom was old had holes in the wall, and the tubs paint was cracking and had brown and yellow stains. The carpet was stained, and looked gross. I did not want to walk barefoot in it. The bed was horribly uncomfortable! You could feel the bedsprings. Room service was horrible. I called 4 times, several hours apart for new bed sheets. Each time room service said they were going to be right up and never showed. We ended up having to deal with the sheets we had, because at 3 am there were no clean sheets available! Our elevator didn't work AND the stair case had broken banisters. I've been happier at Motel 8s. I wouldn't stay if they gave me a free room! Sorry French Market Inn! I love New Orleans but HATED the hotel!

Hotel needs help

In the first room we were put in on the 3rd floor, the tv did not work. They moved us to another room on the ground floor. There was not adequate lighting from the front desk to the room. The carpet and upholstery on the chair was dirty and stained. When we woke up each morning, we were on the bare mattress because there was no fitted sheet on the bed. We had to wait about 30 minutes the first time that we ask to have our vehicle brought around for us. They morning that we left, my husband called in advance to have the vehicle brought to the front, they forgot to call for it. One of the concierges was very prompt, but the other would rather sit or talk on his cell phone. Maybe after the renovation is complete, it will be a nicer place to stay. The location is a great place.
