A hospitable, historic French Quarter inn that’s heavy on amenities

Past and present convene at this historic hotel, which dates to the 1700s.  The hotel was once host to John James Audubon as he painted his famous bird series. It was later a bordello. Today, the Dauphine revels in its storied history and offers a comfortable contemporary hotel with lots of Southern hospitality. Guests can stay in the cottages across Dauphine from the main hotel, which are the original structures.

Highlights
  • Saltwater courtyard pool
  • Free continental breakfast and afternoon tea
  • Jacuzzi tubs
Rooms

The Dauphine's 111 rooms are as varied as the hotel's history. The 14 rooms and suites in the Hermann House Courtyard -- once the home of a wealthy merchant -- sport Jacuzzi tubs. The Carriage House was once a French Quarter townhouse and now offers nine unique courtyard rooms, each outfitted with 19th century antiques. Bathrooms in some suites can be quite lavish with opulently draped whirlpool tubs. Every room offers free Wi-Fi, bathrobes, cable TV, coffee makers, hair dryers, safe, iron and ironing board.  Complimentary continental breakfast, morning newspaper and afternoon tea are nice extras. Some suites include stone fireplaces.

Features

May Bailey's Place, was once a bordello in the red-light district of Storyville. It is now the hotel's intimate bar, complete with a red light outside and "bordello" guest suite upstairs. Visitors are welcome to take books from the inn's library back home.  A recently updated fitness center helps visitors work off the excesses of a visit to New Orleans. Free morning breakfast includes fresh fruit, cereal and a make your own waffles station. There is valet parking (fees apply).

Nice Hotel

The hotel was clean and comfortable. Great staff and the breakfast was nice. The only thing we didnt care for was being able to hear the outside noise in our room at all hours of the night.

Fun, but small and old

It's New Orleans and the French Quarters, our expectations were probably a little high. Parking was extremely expensive. The room was average, but at that price point we expected more amenities and for it to be more plush. Friendly staff helped ease some of the disappointment. Glad we did the French Quarters once, if we go back, it will stay in a different area.

Needs maintainace~

The hotel has maintainance issues. The roof in my room leaked, the shower had mold growing in it, and in general the rooms need a good cleaning. I've stayed there many times, and this last visit was a disapointment. The hotel was short staffed, house keeping left a lot to be desired. Either they were pounding at the door at 8:00 AM or didn't get around to cleaning the room until 4:00 PM. I love the location. The next time I visit New Oreans I'll probably stay there, but be more carefull in inspecting the room before accepting the room.

Location is best feature

Staff was friendly, helpful, and efficient. Rooms were small, and ours did not have a view, and abutted the parking garage which had its own daily ebb and flow, as heard particularly well from our bathroom. The pool is small, the fitness room, small. Location was really good -- just far away enough from the revelers of Bourbon Street. In comparison to Bienville House where I have also stayed, I prefer Bienville House.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

There is a take out window at Cafe du Monde, on the backside away from the street, if waiting for a table is prohibitive. Also, CC's Coffee House (several locations in the city) serves excellent coffee.

Great Staff!

Hotel room was very small and dark, even for a handicap accessible room. Staff was lovely. Very helpful and chatted with us quite a bit to help us choose tours, restaurants, etc. Hotel location was nice and close to most things in french quarter. Steps to Bourbon street and far enough away that it wasn't too noisy. We did unfortunately have drunk girls screaming at 3am in the hallways. So if you are not into the drinking all day type of thing, look for a hotel a bit father from Bourbon street.

Dauphine Orleans Hotel

Played in National Bridge tournament. We were also on our honeymoon and told the desk so. It would have been nice to receive a little surprise like a free drink or a rose or something. We love NOLA and have been there many times. This hotel was fine, didn't like the walk on Dauphine past stinky garbage bins, but that's not the Hotel's fault. The staff was very helpful and eager to help whenever we needed it from pushing elevator buttons to hailing a cab.

Dining tip: Not Applicable

Don't be shy about sampling any and all restaurants. We love NOLA food. I think Brennan's is overrated. Love The Court of the Three Sisters Brunch, and the BBQ shrimp at Mr. B's Bistro. Commander's Palace is great and the prices didn't seem as high as our last visit. Acme Oyster house is noisy; like the oysters better at Oceania. Oceania has GREAT crepes too.

Close to Bourbon Street

This is neither a bad hotel nor a great hotel. Which is why I gave it 3 stars. It delivers on what it promises - clean rooms, good service and nice staff. All things that you should expect from any hotel. The best thing about this hotel is that its right in the french quarter. Its just a block away from Bourbon street and there are plenty of nice restaurants right next to it (Jager Haus and Lousiana Bistro and Bombay Cafe). And when you get bored, its less than a 2 minute stroll to Bourbon street. From this hotel, its less than a 10 minute walk to St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square and from there its a 5 minute walk to the French Market. And when you return in the night, you can use your free coupon for a drink in the hotel's bar for a wine/beer before you hit the bed. Overall a nice hotel. The only thing I think is that its a bit overpriced compared to other hotels in the french quarter. (I havent stayed in the others, but from outside they looked just as nice but were $10 to $35 cheaper than this one on the same day).

Everything in the french quarter is a short walk from this hotel. It is only a block away from the mid section of Bourbon street.

Friendly small old hotel - needs stimulu

People were very friendly but the room had a window that was sealed shut and the room was so small that it felt terribly closed in. The bathrooms need a shelf at least as it was too small to place our necessities. They were doing some paint-up while we were there, but it felt like too little for the overall need to redo. Almost shabby. It was New Orleans, and it was forgivable considering the last five years of struggling to return to being a great host city. Many, many of the other buildings were looking dirty, and in need of freshening up. Sidewalks often in big need of repair, and the garbage in the quarter seemed in the way and smelly. If they keep letting college kids take over the quarter they needn't bother. The history and the traditional jazz brings has brought us back countless times, but they seem to be loosing their roots. I hope the city regains it luster and my grandkids can enjoy it as much as we have.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Everything is close for shopping and dining - even for us Seniors, but too many tee-shirt shops, and do people really need to sell those stupid glasses to drink from? It seems impossible that so many repetitive shops can possibly make it. Royal St. is still better, but it will probably take a few more years to recover the real posh feel it used to have.
