A hospitable, historic French Quarter inn that’s heavy on amenities

Past and present convene at this historic hotel, which dates to the 1700s.  The hotel was once host to John James Audubon as he painted his famous bird series. It was later a bordello. Today, the Dauphine revels in its storied history and offers a comfortable contemporary hotel with lots of Southern hospitality. Guests can stay in the cottages across Dauphine from the main hotel, which are the original structures.

Highlights
  • Saltwater courtyard pool
  • Free continental breakfast and afternoon tea
  • Jacuzzi tubs
Rooms

The Dauphine's 111 rooms are as varied as the hotel's history. The 14 rooms and suites in the Hermann House Courtyard -- once the home of a wealthy merchant -- sport Jacuzzi tubs. The Carriage House was once a French Quarter townhouse and now offers nine unique courtyard rooms, each outfitted with 19th century antiques. Bathrooms in some suites can be quite lavish with opulently draped whirlpool tubs. Every room offers free Wi-Fi, bathrobes, cable TV, coffee makers, hair dryers, safe, iron and ironing board.  Complimentary continental breakfast, morning newspaper and afternoon tea are nice extras. Some suites include stone fireplaces.

Features

May Bailey's Place, was once a bordello in the red-light district of Storyville. It is now the hotel's intimate bar, complete with a red light outside and "bordello" guest suite upstairs. Visitors are welcome to take books from the inn's library back home.  A recently updated fitness center helps visitors work off the excesses of a visit to New Orleans. Free morning breakfast includes fresh fruit, cereal and a make your own waffles station. There is valet parking (fees apply).

Great French Quater Hotel

One block off Burbon Street. This is the perfect Hotel for staying in the French Quater. This is my third stay at the Dauphine and we will definitely be going back. Great rooms, a very good complimentary breakfast, and central to visiting many of the French Quater's sites.

Dauphine Orleans Hotel

Played in National Bridge tournament. We were also on our honeymoon and told the desk so. It would have been nice to receive a little surprise like a free drink or a rose or something. We love NOLA and have been there many times. This hotel was fine, didn't like the walk on Dauphine past stinky garbage bins, but that's not the Hotel's fault. The staff was very helpful and eager to help whenever we needed it from pushing elevator buttons to hailing a cab.

Dining tip: Not Applicable

Don't be shy about sampling any and all restaurants. We love NOLA food. I think Brennan's is overrated. Love The Court of the Three Sisters Brunch, and the BBQ shrimp at Mr. B's Bistro. Commander's Palace is great and the prices didn't seem as high as our last visit. Acme Oyster house is noisy; like the oysters better at Oceania. Oceania has GREAT crepes too.

Second Time Around

This was our second stay at the Dauphine Orleans. It is a convenient walk for most places in the French Quarter including fine restaurants. In fact Bayona is right across the street. The only fault is that our room had lamps on only one side.A simple pin-up would have been an improvement.

we found that having lunch at restaurants such as Brennans, Antoines and Pat O'Briens and eating light at dinner time was economical. They were all only a couple of blocks away.

Close to Bourbon Street

This is neither a bad hotel nor a great hotel. Which is why I gave it 3 stars. It delivers on what it promises - clean rooms, good service and nice staff. All things that you should expect from any hotel. The best thing about this hotel is that its right in the french quarter. Its just a block away from Bourbon street and there are plenty of nice restaurants right next to it (Jager Haus and Lousiana Bistro and Bombay Cafe). And when you get bored, its less than a 2 minute stroll to Bourbon street. From this hotel, its less than a 10 minute walk to St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square and from there its a 5 minute walk to the French Market. And when you return in the night, you can use your free coupon for a drink in the hotel's bar for a wine/beer before you hit the bed. Overall a nice hotel. The only thing I think is that its a bit overpriced compared to other hotels in the french quarter. (I havent stayed in the others, but from outside they looked just as nice but were $10 to $35 cheaper than this one on the same day).

Location is best feature

Staff was friendly, helpful, and efficient. Rooms were small, and ours did not have a view, and abutted the parking garage which had its own daily ebb and flow, as heard particularly well from our bathroom. The pool is small, the fitness room, small. Location was really good -- just far away enough from the revelers of Bourbon Street. In comparison to Bienville House where I have also stayed, I prefer Bienville House.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

There is a take out window at Cafe du Monde, on the backside away from the street, if waiting for a table is prohibitive. Also, CC's Coffee House (several locations in the city) serves excellent coffee.

Nice.

Hotel was far enough away from Bourbon to enjoy some quiet time. Lots of great places to eat nearby, and the hotel bar (May Bailey's) was the best bar we went to during our week in town. Room was average, not spotless but not dirty. No dresser in a king room meant living out of a suitcase for a week, which was disappointing. Flat screen tv in room was set up incorrectly, making it unwatchable. Tempurpedic bed was outstanding and very comfortable. Desk staff was ok, valet staff was great.

Oceana was the best cajun meal we had. The turtle soup is a 100 year old recipe, and it shows. Really great stuff.

NOLA

Great location but there must have been some flooding to the hotel from Hurricane Isacc. The entire hotel smelled like laundry tha no one dried. The carpet in my room was wet as well. Once the place dry's out I am sure it will be a place worth the price.

Just OK

The location is the thing here. The room was not that clean (needed vacuuming) and the sheets did not fit the bed. Staff was good and location was pretty good. Noisy neighbors but that was not the hotel's fault.

Sub-standard workmanship on tile work

We were surprised to find sub-standard workmanship on the bathroom tile work. It was the quality of a no-so-good handyman, not an expert.
