More like a bed & breakfast

The hotel is two old houses that have been converted into guest rooms. They're both interesting buildings that have high ceilings and comfortable rooms. It's not a Holiday Inn or a Ramada -- it's more like a guest house from the 1930s (which it actually is). My room was comfortable for a 3-night stay, but it clearly hasn't been updated in some time. The carpet was worn and there were water stains on the ceiling. Location, on St. Charles Ave near downtown was excellent. Easy access to the French Quarter and Canal Street via the streetcar line. I cancelled my rental car because of it, and had no regrets. The staff was friendly and helpful.

I will go back!!!

when you arrive your wondering if you made a mistake - but go inside!!!! The staff was GREAT!!! the room has so much personality and was very sweet!!! if you want a view, ask for a upper room with the balcony - but this HUGE home turned hotel - holds a New Orleans flavor that I loved!! The trolley was right at the end of the steps of the hotel and just about everything I wanted to visit was reachable by trolley. The only improvement I would suggest is parking - Although the parking was on the street and surrounded by the New Orleans Private patrol cars - being from out of town I was nervous - my car and I were safe and the people from the staff of the hotel, the trolley, every where I went were friendly and kind - I love New Orleans I just didnt have enough time - next time I will!!

Good value, good location.

I came to town on a whim, and actually booked my room [...] a few hours before I got in to town, so that was pretty awesome. The location is great, and the room rates were very reasonable (considering I was not visiting during Mardi Gras) and the staff was very pleasant. I'm pretty low maintenance so I didn't need to ask for anything, but everyone seemed quite willing to help out.The room itself wasn't extremely plush, but it was clean, quiet and well air conditioned - which is exactly I was looking for.Check out Voo Doo BBQ next door. It's now a chain so you can find them elsewhere in Louisiana but it was pretty tasty & reasonably priced (especially compared to prices you're going to find if you head straight to the french quarter).Traffic in New Orleans isn't the worst I've ever experienced (I'm from Atlanta) but having the option to take the street car most places is pretty convenient. Definitely take advantage of that resource.Overall - I was happy with my stay and I would definitely consider staying here again.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

If you're a tourist, definitely bring $3 (as of Jun 2011) to buy a street car day pass. The street cars are pretty convenient, and there is a stop located directly across the street from the hotel. But remember you need exact change to buy a pass, and it's cash only.

no frills, adequate

clean, convenient to the city, on street car line, parking was on public street and somewhat hazardous but I had no problems, no place to sit for real continental breakfast, room adequate, bed comfortable, small closet, price ok for location. Overall ok accomodations for single and young couple on budget.

wonderful little hotel

This is a great, small, family run hotel. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Room was very nice and spacious, although a little noisy from traffic. Hotel is about a 10 minute ride with the trolley to downtown and the french quarter. A great BBQ restaurant and a gym (free for hotel guests) is located right next to hotel.

At home in the Avenue Garden Hotel

Check in was easy - they were expecting me and had everything ready. Room was ready and quite comfortable, TV, Microwave, with shower in bathroom. Have library with books and TV plus outside patio to eat Continental Breakfast if you choose instead of room or library. Convenient to the Streetcars right out front which are fun and convenient to ride. Most of all the people from the Manager on down were very friendly and helpful and most willing to do anything they could to help. And I was there when the whole CITY went wild when the Saints beat the Vikings for the NFC Title and that was a wonderful experience also.

There is good food all over New Orleans. Be adventurous and try things you have never had before in both small and well known places. Don't miss the hot Coffee and Binets at Cafe Dumont.

Look elsewhere

I was very disapointed with the place. Being right on st Charles and the walls are very thin, I constantly heard traffic noise. And also the radio next door. The rooms are very small. The fan was very loud and squeaky. But my biggest complaint was the bathroom. The tub was stained and there was no counter space at all. U get a pedistal sink with a small glass tray or the top of the toilet to put your stuff on. Also the furniture was beyond beaten up. Scratches all over If u are looking for this type of hotel in the same area, look at the prytonia street hotel
