Woodsy and spacious but broken stuff
westwardtraveller Nov 21, 2009
I really like the location in the woods with plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the cabin-like feel. The room itself was ... spacious. Two weaknesses though: 1. The room lighting was amazingly dim. I had all the lamps on at night and it was still not easy to see inside the room. 2. The hot tub and sauna were both permanently disabled - not temporarily broken, but sealed off. Consider that when comparing your options -- it is not worth paying extra for these features since they won't be available.

we have stayed here before and the service was pretty nice but this time the lobby and breakfast people were not freindly and ... we had to ask several times for help to no avail the breakfast was a poor version of food we had no porch lighting even after we called down about it no outdoor seating and the hot tub and sauna were not working. these are a few basic reasons people choose a hotel and We probaly will not make reservations there again next year

Springhouse Inn is going downhill
Beach Traveler Sep 22, 2009
We would not stay here again. Everything is getting run down. The pool area had been closed for at least several weeks and ... when it finally re-opened the jacuzzi was still out of order. They offer a complimentary continental breakfast but it is a lot skimpier than it was a year ago. This would be a wonderful place if it was fixed up!

Nice but past it's prime
Passer By Sep 11, 2009
Upon arrival the Spring House is delightful. Beautiful setting and walking into a beautiful foyer. The breakfast was very ... nice although could be improved with some simple donuts or sweet treats. I loved the outdoor balcony. Although ours had obviously not been used in a long time because the chairs were disgusting.(could not sit on them) It is quiet and restful and was a nice change from chain hotels. Thus giving up some things like clean carpets and drapes can be over looked for a one night stay. Would I come back??? Maybe. The staff was exceptional. We were put in a smoking room and when I pointed out my reservation was for non smoking she made the switch with out batting an eye. very nice. A little loving care would go a long way. The hot tub and spa were out of order and the Beautiful pool was COLD>

Spring House Inn, Porter/Indiana Dunes
Scott Eiler Sep 7, 2009
The hotel denied my Orbitz reservation, even though they had rooms anyway. I took one of those rooms. It was clean and ... full-featured, but the ceiling looked like it had not been swept or repaired in six years - which, coincidentally, is how long the hotel has been under new management according to the desk staff. The new management is so heavily into cutting costs, they locked the doors to the breakfast room at 8 am on Labor Day.

Spent 1 night to celebrate girlfriends birthday. Hotel was built in approx 1982 and is being refurbished. Hotel has only 50 ... large rooms. Small sitting, viewing common rooms everywhere. Every room has patio or deck. Only 1/2 mile from Highway 20 however hotel is surrounded by woods. Work needs to be done however mainly cosmetic. Decks need cleaning, lanscaping could use trimming. Very nice pool. Nature trails. Restaurants are probably 10 minute drive. Personnel very friendly and helpful. Will definetely stay again

The hotel is in a great location. Very quiet, and nice. However, the staff was very unfriendly, and rude. We were trying to ... use the pool, it was around 9:00PM. Suddenly, the administrator, accompanied by a foreigner(supposedly the owner) rushed in and started yelling at us that the pool was closed. Everywhere there were signs posted that the pool is open unitll 11:00PM. Then the foreigner told us that we can stay a little bit. After maybe half an hour, around 10:00PM, he came back and kicked us out of the pool. We were hoping to swim and relax in the pool after an hour and a half of stressfull driving. There was also a sauna, which was already shut down, although it was advertised to be available as well.

Pegita Aug 11, 2009
I did like the remote woodsy area, however, as soon as we pulled into the parking lot, with all the weeds coming through the ... pavement, we knew we were in for an interesting visit. The hotel looked deserted and uninviting. (The maintenance outdoors defintely needs some work). The main lobby and sitting area were very nice, however, when we opened the door to our room, it was not a very pleasant smell. It just really needs some upgrades with the bedspreads and carpet. The curtains were very dirty and the windows looking out were just as bad. I think at one time this was a great place, but has been neglected in areas. If it was properly maintained I would come back, but not in the condition it is in right now!

Bill Aug 10, 2009
Really enjoyed the woods that our room deck looked out over on the back side, even saw some deer in the morning from there! ... My girlfriend commented on how dirty the decks were, however. Maybe the hotel staff should sweep and wipe them down more often. The room itself was very clean and nice. The whole place was a pleasant Tudor style Inn back in a woods setting. We were close to the Michigan City outlet mall and beach and there was a very good local Mexican food place / tavern 2 miles away!

Rick Aug 10, 2009
Off the beaten path. No semis storing down the road. Setting backs on a bluff with a quiet stream and large oaks. Friendly ... atmosphere. Numerous sitting rooms. Good cont'l breakfast. National Lakeshore trail is less than a half mile away. Calumet bike trail is only 1.5 miles away via quiet paved road. Indiana Dune State Park only 2 miles away. Better price than national chains. Restaurants are a couple of miles away.

Quaint, perfect location, dusty!
Iansmommy Aug 4, 2009
I really liked the location, surroundings, and the vintage setting. However, the rooms were dusty and poorly maintained. ... Even when asked to dust and vacuum the dust was barely touched and under the beds were full of old wrappers. Unfortunately it is obvious that monies are not being spent to maintain this great property. The pool was not working and the workout room needs some updating. Once the economy has stabilized hopefully management can recruit some investers. This place can become a gem.

Room size was comparable to chain hotels, and room was very clean. Nice to have a microwave, iron, refrigerator. Couldn't ... hear our neighbors until a very unhappy baby couldn't sleep one night. We didn't stay in the room much due to our family nearby. If you stay, make sure the "do not disturb" is on the door or the housekeeping staff will be knocking a little too early! The parking lot really does need some work. Fix the potholes and pull some weeds to improve the first impression. I might not have stayed if I hadn't had someone else's recommendation and my rsvp already made.

Gary Jul 18, 2009
We enjoyed the nice large room and quiet wooded setting. The shower knob was missing its screw and fell off when used. ... Continental breakfast was just coffee, period. The drive and parking lot has large chuck holes and needs attention. We took the South Shore rail Line to Chicago to the Theatre. We would stay there again since the price is good for the area, and the rooms are nice and larger than usual.

Bad Stay
Disgusted In Michigan Jul 3, 2009
This was one of the worst hotel stays I have ever experienced. When I arrived at the hotel they did not have my reservation ... and had to call Orbitz which was very embarrassing. As we were driving up to the hotel my first thought was "what have I done" there was a building next to it that was not being used, the parking lot and lawn were both overran with weeds. It looked absolutely horrible from the outside. the clerk told us that breakfast was in the morning from 8-10 but when we got downstairs at 9 we were told that breakfast was served from 5-8 so we missed out on it. We called the front desk to request another pillow and was told that they would call us back and they never did. I will never book another trip through Orbitz and I will tell everyone that I know the horrible time that I had. This hotel looks absolutely wonderful in the pictures but it was nothing like I thought it would be. They were repairing the pool and had a very strong smell like rubber cement all through the halls it was just terrible. If you are thinking of staying here don't do it!

I was led to believe that the outlet mall was very close to this hotel and that it was right off of I94 which was not true. When I asked for directions I was given a brocture and we had to try and figure out how to get there from the hotel which was out in a remote area. We ended up stopping at a gas station to get directions. The hotel staff was not helpful at all, they could've told us how to get to the Outlet Mall.
