The independently-owned Whitehall Hotel is Chicago's answer to the quirky boutique hotel, with a prestigious list of past guests that includes Katharine Hepburn and Mick Jagger. The Whitehall has been around since the 1920s, and maintains a combination of European-inspired charm and warm Midwestern hospitality, from the plush upholstered lounge-seating to the dark wood paneling and sparkling chandeliers. Feast on steamed dumplings and other Asian bites at Mei's Corner, or drink in the same seats that the Beatles once graced in the Whitehall Lounge. Free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel (fees may apply) brings you back into the 21st century, though personal services like the overnight shoeshine retain that vintage feel.

Great location and value

Great location. Great service. Some problems: poor lighting in room. Need more TV channels. Key cards constantly do not work well.

Great location

Had to ask for wash cloths every night. Once the housekeeping staff even took clean wash cloths from our room. Petty nonsense. Unable to control heat in room. Have been to Chicago before and will vacation there again. There are other hotels near the Water Tower.

European Charm??

We were visting Chicago for the first time and chose the Whitehall by its description on the Orbitz Website. It was centrally located to the sites we want to see as well as close to Michigan Avenue and fine restaurants and night life. I was very disappointed by the fact that they do not have a "full-time Concierge on duty. Most of the time there was no body there to ask qestions and get recommendations. We spent a great deas of our time out trying to fine answers to our questions regarding transportation, restaurants, etc. It cost us money as well as time. I have personally been to Chicao at least 6 times for business conferences, and this hotel was my least favorite. I would rank it fair, and I will not go to the Whitehall again.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

Use the Chicago transit. It goes directly to the Museums, etc. Take the tour buses/trolleys to scope out the City and learn abouut the attractions. Then take the buses or trains to reach the sites you want to see.

Repairs incomplete

The heating system was not working in our room. When we called the front desk to ask for another room, the person sent an "engineer" to fix the problem. Shortly after he "fixed" the system (he shut it off) it leaked and the carpet was soaked. We asked for another room and were told that they would send someone again. We finally got another room, with attitude from the front desk staff. The concierge was most helpful in recommending a wonderful restaurant for brunch. Only way to get ice was to call room service.

Whitehall under renovation

The people were lovely, and the Whitehall is in many ways a lovely old building. But the rooms were quite small and outdated, and a lot didn't work quite right. The airconditioning was fussy and one of the elevators was broken for half of our stay. They seem to be renovating and adding central air, so maybe soon the rooms will be as good as the service downstairs, but for right now, that's not the case.

Nice hotel, great Location.

The staff was great and the hotel room was very clean and service was great. The hotel is a bit dated, and the exercise room is pretty small. But overall its a good value... a block from the Hancock Center and just three blocks from the Chicago stop on the Red Line of the "L".

Weekend getaway to Chicago!

Chicago is an amazing city and I would recommend that everyone goes there once in their life! We had such a great time seeing all of the city. We got a three day transit pass for only $14 and used it all day, everyday. Did not take one cab. We went to Wrigley field to see the Phillies play the Cubs, went to Navy Pier, Millenium Park, went on a boat ride, went to the top of the Hancock Bldg. and went out to eat at all the hot spots! Can't wait to go back!

not that great

Took forever to get ice from room service since the building has no ice machines. Our room was on the same floor where renovations were being done, the air conditioning was way to loud and our room was right next to the other hotel's garbage pickup which would be at 745 am sharp

Great location!

The hotel is between 2 of the main streets, Michigan Ave & Rush St. You can walk to everything. The hotel is small unlike some of the other hotels close by. Would recommend the pinnacle room not a superior king even for 2 people.
