The Hotel Was Nice but a few glitches!

The service and staff were extremely nice and accomodating. However the water was only luke warm and would not get hot, so we could not take a shower for two of the days we were there. Chicago with 20 degree weather and cold showers do not mix. Also the television in our room had a horrible picture the color was green, and it was very old. Aside from those two things , the location and the food from the resturaunt were very good.

Not so bad, but not so good

Super super location-but i was not impressed w/the staff or the hotel. The room had the worst lighting and we found a dirty towel in the TV console. The beds were awesome-great linens...and otherwise the hotel room appeared to be clean. When we checked in the hotel was sold out so all they had left were smoking rooms...do people still smoke in hotels??? They accomdated us in the only other non smoking room they had-which was DIRECTLY across from the elevator-which turned out to be fine! All in all not a bad value-just plan on sleeping here and not enjoying any of the non-existent ammenities. Not a bad fitness center either! No coffee pot in the room which is a bummer cause you have to go to the lobby to get a cup of coffee to have in the morning. Plus you had to call for ice and we called twice once it came and once it never did.

Great Location, That's about it

For the price the staff was very unfriendly. Stayed at Hampton Inn earlier same week and had a much better experience. All you are doing is paying for location. Got stuck in elevator for 10-15 minutes. Walls made out of cardboard heard everything in rooms and halls. Paid for "premier room", and did have a nice bathroom but upgraded bedding was simply a terrible mattress wrapped in a thick mattress pad. Woke up sore every morning. [...]Went to front desk to ask about something and never heard back from front desk. Much better options for price. Only concierge was a machine in the lobby. Staff not helpful at all when asking questions. STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE

An unpleasant experience

When we made our reservation, we weren't told that non-smoking rooms were not available. Upon check-in we were assigned a smoking room on the smoking floor. The room and hall ways reeked of smoke which made our one-night stay unpleasant. The staff was helpful in sending up a machine to deodorize the room and although it helped somewhat, the smoking odors were still there. Had we known that non-smoking rooms were not available, we would have stayed elsewhere; and the result is that will noty stay here again. In addition thre was no TV remote; no clock and the TV was old,and outdated and not working properly.

Old & Musty

I had an early departure flight and was assured that if I called the front desk in the morning they would be able to secure a taxi for my trip to O'Hare. When I called @ 5:45AM I was told I would have to handel this on my own. May seem like a small detail but can be critical when trying to make a flight. I found customer service to be fair at best.

Somethings Missing

Have stayed in same area. Whitehall is missing the touch of a caring General Manager. Room was to be non-smoking,had a air purifier in the room, didn't work. When requested to change roomI was instructed to check in later, it was full occupancy. We stayed for 4 days, location saved the reservation. Staff were friendly, Concierge was very helpful. Will not choose to stay at this hotel in future visits.

Nothing Great

I stayed three days with my two children. My cousin stayed down the hall with her 9 year old daughter. It has a great location - right next to the John Hancock building on the Magnificent Mile. We spent time on Navy Pier, in Millennium Park, at the Filed Museum of Natural History and shopping. The rooms were beautiful and clean. The maids and bellmen, friendly, helpful and efficient. Now, the downside - the front desk staff were neither friendly nor efficient. No smiles, not even a "Hello" upon arrival. I did early check-in, (before my room was ready) and when I returned later in the day, they could no longer find my reservation. The front desk (unlike the rooms) was far from spotless. When we pointed out the spilled pop on the reception desk the clerk did nothing to clean it up (either she thought such work was beneath her or it wasn't in her job description). Also, I am always annoyed when I pay for a luxury hotel and they then charge extra to have internet in my room

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

The John Hancock Center is a short walk from the hotel. If you go there around 6:00 - while everyone else is headed for supper - you will have the entire observation deck to yourself! There is a choice of two self-guided, narrated tours - one geared to adults and one for children which come with the price of admission. They are informative & entertaining. I loved it - and so did my 10 year old son.

It has seen better days. Great location

The hotel is located in a walk distance to the Magnificent Mile and the Hancock Tower. it is also close to the red line which can be used to go up and down through Chicago. Our staying would have been better if the room was better maintained, the bathroom ceiling had problems with the painting, the closet doors were not working properly, putting my kids in risk, and the old TV had lost its colors. Besides, a couple argued/fought in the room next to mine one night when it was necessary to call the police and medical service. The problem was the following day when the staff did not say a word about it even after I questioned what happened. I understand this could happen anywhere, but I expected a better service to the guests afterwards.

Not worth the price

My son and I decided to attend a midweek Cubs game and wanted the "Chicago" experience. We opted to stay downtown and thought we would stay away from the hotel chains. Mistake. The Whitehall Hotel speaks of old world charm.... if stale smoke smells, malfunctioning air conditioning, slow tiny elevators and wifi for a fee is your idea of old world charm than this is the place to stay. If you would like any of the creature comforts of hotels, i.e. ice machines with reasonably priced bottles of water (not cash bar $3.50 and $3.00 m&m's), closets that have both doors on them, not just one, less than $18.00 breakfast, and rooms with all the trim work (whole sections missing), cut off pipes coming thru the bathroom tile floor. I could go on and on.[...] I requested a non smoking room.Upon arrival my son and I got to our room and low and behold.... a smoking room. I called the front desk to have my room changed and was told that there were not any available rooms until the next day. The front desk manager offered to have housekeeping use a machine to "change" the air but we would have to leave the room for at least an hour or two. When we came back later the room smelled marginally better but the dangerous air machine was still sitting on the table and was never removed. I thought if we could turn the A/C unit cooler and the fan faster that it might help, wrong again the unit was malfunctioning so it never got cooler than 74 degrees unless we wanted to open the window and listen to the cooling units in the alley. We were switched the next morning to a lower floor that had A/C and did not stink of smoke but by then my opinion was set on the hotel. There are many hotels in the downtown area that would be a better choice than this one. Chicago is a great town and I can see returning again in the future but not to the Whithall Hotel.
