The independently-owned Whitehall Hotel is Chicago's answer to the quirky boutique hotel, with a prestigious list of past guests that includes Katharine Hepburn and Mick Jagger. The Whitehall has been around since the 1920s, and maintains a combination of European-inspired charm and warm Midwestern hospitality, from the plush upholstered lounge-seating to the dark wood paneling and sparkling chandeliers. Feast on steamed dumplings and other Asian bites at Mei's Corner, or drink in the same seats that the Beatles once graced in the Whitehall Lounge. Free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel (fees may apply) brings you back into the 21st century, though personal services like the overnight shoeshine retain that vintage feel.

Excellent location and value

Room was comfortable, but a little crowded. Bathroom quite adequate unlike the nearby Knickerbocker. Location is ideal for shopping, touring and entertainment/eating.

Whitehall, rude night manager

We were supposed to check into the Whitehall on Friday July 24th. When we arrived at 10:30 pm on Friday night, we were told that our room was unavailable due to "maintenance issues". The offered to put us up in a Best Western in Grant Park. After I refused their offer and asked to see the manager--a very rude gentleman said "well that is what you get for booking on Orbitz--we always bump them first! Needless to say, this comment did not go over very well. After several minutes of heated conversation they offered to put us up in the Talbott just down the block. We did have a very nice stay at the Talbott and I would highly recommend the Talbott. We were able to check into the Whitehall on Saturday morning, it was ok nothing spectacular. The rooms are small but quiet. Beds and pillows were nice. Their service at the front desk and with management leaves a lot to be desired. The bar at the Fornetto Mei is really nice, good friendly bartenders there. When we go back to Chicago, won't be using the Whitehall.

Good Choice

Great stay. Good choice. Room was newly remodeled. Only issue was that the electronic room key took anywhere from 3 to 20 swipes to work.

My Chicago Experience

I arrived at my hotel only to find it was under renovations and had to be moved to a best western hotel further down the city. Although this was unpleasant I made the best out of the worst situation given to me. The transition was easy and the hotel was fairly descent, although it was a bit farther away from the event I had to attend, on Saturday, it also meant more cab fare.

Exceptionally friendly staff

Just a block from the Hancock Tower, it would be an excellent choice for those who desire a location north of the "Loop".

very nice hotel

This is an older, non-chain, boutique hotel. The elevators were small and the TV in the room was older. But if you're visiting Chicago, how much time do you really want to spend in the elevator or watching TV? Chain hotels may offer more extras and amenities, but this hotel has a lot to offer: It has a great downtown location-we were able to walk to the Magnificent Mile as well as to public transportation, both subway and bus. This made it inexpensive and easy to get anywhere in the city. The room was very comfortable-we could tell it had undergone recent renovation. When we returned to our room each night, it was neat and clean with turn-down service and ice delivered. Overall, the hotel was a great value in an expensive city. We would stay there again if we return to Chicago.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

The Chicago/State red line stop of the subway is three blocks away. Use it to access most any location in the city.
