One of Chicago's oldest luxury hotels but certainly no slouch, the Whitehall brims with 19th century elegance -- imagine chandeliers, wood paneling and tufted leather chairs, all restored to match the original European grace and grandeur of this Gold Coast gem.

Great room for the price.
Was in Chicago for a convention and had a limited budget. Found the Whitehall fit into that budget and was in a perfect location. I was concerned about some of the reviews on other travel site but, I thought I would give it a chance. Yes, it's old and small. Yes, it could use a makeover. But, for the price it's awesome. I did see the strings hanging of the chair in my room that someone photographed. Maybe I got the same room. But, come on, who cares. I wasn't hosting a social event. The place is clean. Things are worn but, not warn out. The bed is comfortable and they give you lots of fluffy pillows. I felt very comfortable leaving my personal items out on the bed or bathroom counter. The staff was extremely friendly and helped me quickly. The air conditioning was noisy and I had to use ear plugs. However I don't think it was any different then any other hotel in the area. The Four Seasons is directly across the street and at $500 per night they provide ear plugs for you. My friend stayed there for the same convention. The shower at the Whitehall gave me a warm shower everyday and the safe was large enough to hold my laptop. Bottom line if you want to pampered in a luxury hotel, go to a luxury hotel. If you want a great value go to the Whitehall.

Very nice old boutique charm
I have stayed at this property many times over the last 8-10 years. I still try to stay there first before I look elsewhere. Location is very convenient, staff is second to none, and most rooms are very nice and comfortable. Needs a little TLC, but they are scheduled to get that in the next few months. Highly suggest you try this property.

Whitehall in need of Overhaul
We waited an hour to check in. There was only one front desk person working . This lovely lady fielded complaint phone calls as well as general information hotel calls while checking clients in.We heard a great many complaints. There were no other hotel employees availble. To clarify matters we found the overall staff to be helpful and friendly. The hotel itself was ill kept and dingy. Our room thermostat was broken; hence our room was cold. We called for assistance with pay for view only to find it could not be repaired and that there were other rooms with the same problem. The shower fixture was near broken and not working correctly. By the third day we were getting a back up from the shower drain. We were happy that we had many outside plans. The sheets were clean and the bed was comfortable. We firmly believe that since the 2004 Zagart survery that this historical property has not been touched. In all of this we simply could not bring ourselves to check out the resturants under the Whitehall umbrealla.

Time-saving tip:
Not Applicable
It has recently come to my attention that the seller takes the word of each hotel as to how comfortable etc, it is. I am amazed that this occurs. My advise is to know exactly where you are staying and seek outside recommendations.

Location, location, location
Great staff, nicely redone room in older building. Room was not large, but comfortable. Bed was great. Bath appeared to be recently remodeled with granite and tile. Only a block from Water Tower Place on the Magnificent Mile. We took train/bus from O'Hare and had only a short walk.

Best Gold Coast location
LOVE the location this hotel. The rooms are beautiful, altough our bed was a bit hard--but I'm used to having a memory foam topper, so that's why. I'd definately stay here again!
