Rooms
The James Hotel Chicago exemplifies boutique luxury. Understated rooms make use of bold accent pieces, from mocha throw pillows to moody gallery lighting, to flesh out contemporary style. Think of a downtown bachelor pad-complete with seamless shower doors, cube-shaped ottomans and tripod-like floor lamps. Loft penthouses (available in one- or two-bedroom layouts at 1,400 square feet each) strike a balance between active engagement and comfort with an Apple-based entertainment system with full-space surround sound, an Eames lounge chair and oversized sectional sofa with mohair and down cushions. Wi-Fi is free.
Dining
Visitors at The James Hotel Chicago can enjoy nightlife with cocktails and other evening drinks at the in-house Jimmy and Primehouse Bar. Foodies, meanwhile, crave the scene and food at David Burke's Primehouse, where steaks are dry-aged in a salt-tiled Himalayan aging room. The dining rooms pour on the swank -- right down to the sexy red leather booths.
Recreation
Active travelers flock to the 24-hour gym to release endorphins on 10 cardiovascular machines and more than 25 pieces of strength equipment. Personal training sessions also can be arranged through celebrity fitness guru Jim Karas.

Guests reward themselves with pampering facials, massages and body treatments at The Spa by Asha, an Aveda spa. In-room services also are available.

Great Chicago Hotel

My husband and I visited recently for the weekend with our two teenagers. The James was perfect with regard to location convenience, above board customer service, nicely furnished and comfortable rooms, and great value for our money. Our room was small but we were not in it very much. It met our needs and more. Great flat screen tv and good room service. Nice bar downstairs. Concierge very helpful for tickets and directions. We will come back to the James Hotel.

My review of James Hotel Chicago

The room was really nice. The shower was exceptional- two shower heads; unlike any shower at any hotel I have experienced before. I forgot my toothbrush and toothpaste and within 2 minutes of when I called room service, someone was knocking on my door with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Very impressive. The concierge didn't seem to be very familiar with the area; she led us in the wrong direction. Except for the concierge, my experience was wonderful and I would highly recommend this hotel. Wonderful location as well.

The James looked and felt ...

The James looked and felt fabulous. just a few minor things that i wish were different...our room had a smell that would just not go away. Not sure what it was but it smelled like body odor but we believe it has something to do with standing water somewhere...the tub didn't drain well. and the sink in our bathroom...very cool looking but not functional with its flat bottom...it didn't drain fast either! I thought the room service menu was limited, overpriced and the food didn't taste very good. I paid $8 for a bowl of chicken soup that tasted like Heathy Choice straight out of the can. Yuck. but other than those few odd things it was a beautiful, stylish hotel with an extremely friendly staff.

location, location, location

This is a great boutique hotel. The staff is very friendly, and service is first class. Located one block from the magnificent mile and world class shopping, you can't go wrong with this hotel. It is very trendy, not very family friendly. Great Workout, fitness room. The steakhouse was good for breakfast, too many dinning options in Chicago to eat at the hotel. Bathroom is very simple but clean, beds are very comfortable with thick duvets, and big screen tv and seating round out a very comfortable room. The staff make the difference, 5 star service. The concierge gave us directions to a local restaurant over the phone. Within 5 minutes a staff member dropped off written directions and a review of the restaurant. First Class. and a great location.

An ideal base

The James Hotel Chicago proved to be an ideal location for our stay. The room size was good, although the furniture was ultra modern and a little quirky for our more conservative tastes. In the bathroom, we found the shallow sink impractical and the sliding door to the bathroom heavy to open and close. Standards in the Hotel were good and the Staff friendly efficient and keen to ensure our comfort. Being English we would have liked a kettle to boil water to make tea, but we were kept well supplied with fresh milk and tea bags when required. In terms of location, The James cannot be faulted, with Michigan Avenue close by for shopping and sightseeing.Public transport, both metro and CTA bus are also convenient and easy to use. Overall the deal we had was good value for money especially as it included breakfast. We would certainly consider using this hotel again and can recommend it to others.

If sightseeing, buy a CTA travel pass for use on buses and the metro. Seven days travel for $20 is good value and gives access to the zoo, museums and galleries.

uncomfortable

I found the rooms at the James hotesl were too small for the cost and rather uncomfortable. The quantity of room must have been more important than the comfort during the design. Although the restaurant and bar are excellant, great food and service.
