The landmark River Hotel has kept up with the times, especially when it comes to environmental impact. Its LEED-registered building and Green Power Partner utilizes low-flow showerheads and participates in recycling programs. For what it may lack in luxury and size, the hotel scores on points like casual ambiance, simplicity and value.

  • Delivery from select neighborhood restaurants
  • Bella Bacino's Italian Bistro & Pizzeria

The River Hotel has a convenient location in Chicago, steps from the Magnificent Mile, Tribune Tower, Millennium Park and the Loop for business travelers.

Average Hotel

The location was pretty good and even the tiny room size (about 250 square feet) didn't bother me, more so the location of the actual room. We were on the fourth floor and looking at the back of a dirty building. What was mostly irritating is that the second we checked in they automatically made it seem like we weren't as "special" because we weren't spending as much as some customers and it seemed as if she was purposely putting us in not-great room because she basically said we need to upgrading within the first minute of us being there. Overall, it was fine, but won't be going back.

Okay Stay

The hotel was nice, but for some reason I expected more for $76. The room did not offer a microwave and fridge, so I could have been just as comfortable at a Super 8 hotel and saved $30, and had a microwave & fridge in the room. Also, the staff failed to place liners in the trash can and the cordless phone was inoperable.

Weekend Getaway

Cons: The room was very small, with just enough room for a full size bed and a very small desk. Shower pressure was very low, and the position of the shower head was difficult to adjust, in order to avoid getting bathroom floor wet. While checking in, we were switched to a room with a view of the river. However, the window was very small and was partially blocked by a wall, so we were unable to appreciate the view. Pros: Free water bottle coolers. Free wifi Pizza restaurant downstairs was convenient and good food. Good location Rooms were clean Free computers to use and free printing on the first floor.

River Hotel

I loved the location, however the room was decorated very new/age retro, not very "homey" feeling.

Small hotel, great location, nice view.

When arriving there, the staff was welcoming and helpful. The elevators were kinda shabby but the age of the over all hotel was cute. In the room, they provided a coffee maker with some tea and coffee, with a water dispenser in the hallways of the hotel rooms. There's a TV and FREE WIFI! The hotel room looked out over a river, which was AWESOME! From this hotel you will pretty much hear most if not all city sounds because it's on a busy street and the buildings have formed a valley around the river which can cause for some echoing. I traveled with one other friend and we found the room to be small but the view, location, and price of the overall stay makes up for it. This hotel was the cheapest I could find while still being able to be in walking distance of some of the best attractions. Just around the corner is the Magnificent Mile, for great shopping. 15 minutes away, North, is the John Handcock Tower, which has the BEST view of Chicago, by far. Also, Lincoln Park, is just a bit North past the Handcock Tower... which is a great area for bike riding. This hotel is about 30 minutes away from the Midway Airport, so it makes for a decent cab ride. Make sure to go South West along Michigan to see the Silver Bean and the Memorial Fountain! Eat the Deep Dish pizza while there if you can.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

If you're visiting Chicago from out of town and are going to be going to the Navy Boot Camp Graduation, I wouldn't suggest this hotel because it is about an hour away, which makes for an expensive cab ride and you having to wake up early to make the trip.

some were not friendly at all

In general, I am very much satisfied. But, when I was checking out, the lady at the counter had very cold and snobbish attitude toward me (female, Asian), while her attitude toward the next one (male, Caucasian) was 'clearly' much politer and nicer. (This is on May 20th around 8 a.m.) This ruined all my experience at this hotel. So, I will not stay there again. Just to make sure, I myself was very polite. (I mean, some of the staff were very nice to me. So, my impression is that the experience with their staff depends on your luck if you are an Asian female, while you are more likely to have no trouble with them if otherwise.)

Unbeatable deal for the location

Perfect location. Went to two Cubs games via train. EASY!! River boat tour is across the street. Restaurant on site is very good. Walking distance to everything. Navy Pier,Michigan Av shopping, Grant Park,Trains, all very close. I came in on The South Shore Line. It's the way to go. The River Hotel is a short walk from the terminal, EASY! The staff was very nice and the hotel was clean and sharp. I have already booked two more stays. Sporting events are a breeze from here.
