Perfect location at the top of the Magnificent mile

The landmark River Hotel has kept up with the times, especially when it comes to environmental impact. Its LEED-registered building and Green Power Partner utilizes low-flow showerheads and participates in recycling programs. For what it may lack in luxury and size, the hotel scores on points like casual ambiance, simplicity and value.

  • Kitchenettes available, plus free chilled, purified bottled water
  • Delivery from select neighborhood restaurants
  • Bella Bacino's Italian Bistro & Pizzeria

The River Hotel has a convenient location in Chicago, steps from the Magnificent Mile, Tribune Tower, Millennium Park and the Loop for business travelers.

"Blah" at best...

Above anything and everything else, the location for this hotel was fantastic. It's right on the Chicago River with plenty of restaurants and sights within walking distance. It's also close to "The Loop," so do yourself a favor and buy a multi-day pass for the CTA from the Walgreen's around the corner. The Corner Bakery Cafe around the corner is also fantastic, so make sure you grab a pastry or one of their great panini sandwiches. The Bads: As for the hotel itself, it was very forgettable. Not that anything stood out negatively, but if you asked me 3 months from now to describe it I probably couldn't. It was that lackluster. The room itself was tidy and neat but was literally the size of a walk-in closet. The bed was kind of stiff and unforgiving, leaving a good night's sleep off the checklist. The hotel provides a single-cup coffee maker in it which is nice, but it would have been nicer if I had gotten more coffee on day 2 and day 3...apparently it's a 1-cup ration. The Goods: As I said before, location is fantastic. During my 4 days in Chicago I walked or took the train everywhere. Willis Tower, Navy Pier, Millenium Park, Magnificent Mile are all a 10 minute walk away in this beautiful city. The good thing was I wasn't there to stay in a hotel, so the lack of amenities wasn't that big of a deal. There's a computer room which is open 24/7 and is helpful for out-of-towners to find their way around without carrying around a map. Bottom Line: If you're going to be in town for a few days shopping, going to baseball games or seeing the sights, this hotel is fine for you. Odds are you won't spend much time in your room anyway, and you'll find this is a great location for the money you'll spend. If you're going on "vacation" and you're the type that wants the hotel to enhance the trip, look elsewhere. Spend some extra coin for the frills that some of the many hotels in the area may offer.

Make sure you make it to Giordano's pizza. It's around the corner, right of Michigan Ave and may be the best pie I've ever eaten.

Weekend getaway

Nice easy check in and check out. They did have the water station on our floor so we were able to fill up our water bottles. They had empty water bottles, too, if you need them. It was great to be so close to Michigan Ave. We walked everywhere - to Navy Pier for the Octoberfest and fireworks, to Millenium Park, even to Sears/Willis Tower. We flew into Midway and took the Orange line in. The hotel was only a few blocks away from the State and Lake station. Very convenient. We had one of the smaller rooms in the hotel (pretty tight for 2 of us), but it was enough. All we did was sleep and shower. We were on the 4th floor and the water pressure in the shower was pretty weak. Otherwise, it was a great stay.

Parking cost a plus, "gym" a minus.

Warning-- gym is a couple treadmills and some weights in a tiny room in the basement. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. It was nice to have filtered water available. Parking was a great deal-- $24/night in a garage one block away. Awesome view from the room, and the location was ideal.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

ROOF on theWit is just around the corner-- friendly staff, amazing views, nice atmosphere (more conducive to meeting other singes than Trump's Rebar or Sable) and good drinks. If you're a beer drinker, BEST selection at a dive called "Local Option" in Lincoln Park. Monk's Pub has an awesome draught selection as well and is within walking distance- Wells and Lake.

Fantastic location, comfy beds!

Fantastic location & comfy beds made our stay very enjoyable! Chicago was an amazing city. and this hotel was right in the middle of all the attractions we wanted to visit. only negative? The room was pretty small and the price was a little high for what we got. But other than that, a lovely little hotel. Found the restaurant over priced, and the food was alright for these prices, we only ate dinner there once.

Great Location room is a bit cramped...

I'm guessing this is just because of the price range I was in, and the fact that I only needed one bed. But I paid $189 + tax, and the room was incredibly small. They had a queen size bed jammed into the room, and the width of the room was only 12" - 18" longer then the length of the bed. It was just too tight for my liking, but then again, that was probably mainly due to the fact that I was there by myself, paid the price that I did, and booked the room last minute. Probably perfect for your typical business person. I also always sleep with a fan blowing, and this room had a nice and loud A/C, which you can control whether it's on or off. I preferred it to be on and as loud as possible. Overall, decent room, nice staff, cramped room.
