Perfect location at the top of the Magnificent mile

As locations go, this Wacker Drive hotel couldn't do better, occupying prime riverfront space in the historical Mather Tower off the Magnificent Mile. The landmark River Hotel has kept up with the times, especially when it comes to environmental impact. Its LEED-registered building and Green Power Partner utilizes low-flow showerheads and participates in recycling programs. For what it may lack in luxury and size, the hotel scores on points like casual ambiance, simplicity and value.

Highlights
  • LEED-registered hotel with green design and practices
  • Kitchenettes available, plus free chilled, purified bottled water
  • Delivery from select neighborhood restaurants
  • Bella Bacino's Italian Bistro & Pizzeria
  • Free high-speed wireless Internet access throughout the hotel
Rooms

Well-kept, comfortable rooms at the River Hotel offer the no-frills traveler twin, full, premium queen and king beds, plus work station. Some rooms are equipped with kitchenettes, and corporate apartments are available for professionals seeking accommodations for longer than a month.

Features

Not every professional has an expense account and travel-related costs can really add up -- lodging, food and transport to name a few. For the conservative business traveler, the River Hotel offers a great value with special perks like free wireless Internet access and complimentary chilled, purified bottled water. The River Hotel has a convenient location in Chicago, steps from the Magnificent Mile, Tribune Tower, Millennium Park and the Loop for business travelers.

Other features include a 24-hour concierge, and fitness room. Bella Bacinos, a casual Italian-American trattoria, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Valet and self-parking are available for a fee.

The River Hotel

The hotel is in an excellent location. With the exception of Shedd's Aquirium and the Field Attraction, everything was in walking distance. Our car needed to be jumped in the parking garage and the hotel parking staff was very accomodating. The room was nice but the bathroom had limited space. Overall, it was a great experience. Would definitely stay there again.

The Chicago Go-Card is an excellent time and money saver. With all the attractions seen we saved $100 per card. To save time, pick up the Chicago Go-Card the day before it's used.

"Blah" at best...

Above anything and everything else, the location for this hotel was fantastic. It's right on the Chicago River with plenty of restaurants and sights within walking distance. It's also close to "The Loop," so do yourself a favor and buy a multi-day pass for the CTA from the Walgreen's around the corner. The Corner Bakery Cafe around the corner is also fantastic, so make sure you grab a pastry or one of their great panini sandwiches. The Bads: As for the hotel itself, it was very forgettable. Not that anything stood out negatively, but if you asked me 3 months from now to describe it I probably couldn't. It was that lackluster. The room itself was tidy and neat but was literally the size of a walk-in closet. The bed was kind of stiff and unforgiving, leaving a good night's sleep off the checklist. The hotel provides a single-cup coffee maker in it which is nice, but it would have been nicer if I had gotten more coffee on day 2 and day 3...apparently it's a 1-cup ration. The Goods: As I said before, location is fantastic. During my 4 days in Chicago I walked or took the train everywhere. Willis Tower, Navy Pier, Millenium Park, Magnificent Mile are all a 10 minute walk away in this beautiful city. The good thing was I wasn't there to stay in a hotel, so the lack of amenities wasn't that big of a deal. There's a computer room which is open 24/7 and is helpful for out-of-towners to find their way around without carrying around a map. Bottom Line: If you're going to be in town for a few days shopping, going to baseball games or seeing the sights, this hotel is fine for you. Odds are you won't spend much time in your room anyway, and you'll find this is a great location for the money you'll spend. If you're going on "vacation" and you're the type that wants the hotel to enhance the trip, look elsewhere. Spend some extra coin for the frills that some of the many hotels in the area may offer.

Make sure you make it to Giordano's pizza. It's around the corner, right of Michigan Ave and may be the best pie I've ever eaten.

Perfect for Lollapalooza in Grant Park

A really great stay for Lollapalooza 2011- close to Grant Park, and lots of Chicago attractions, good restaurants & convenience stores and shopping; we walked everywhere! Rooms are small, but very clean, staff was kind; the valet spent nearly 20 min. in the rain to hail us a cab to O'Hare. Stayed at The W for Lolla in 2009 and it was also lovely, but The River is much closer and affordable, and provides just what you need for a trip during which you will be spending much of your time outside enjoying the city; a clean, comfortable space to rest and re-charge at the end of each day. Will stay again if we go back to Chicago.

Weekend Getaway

Great location just off Michigan Ave. and close to everything. Room was pretty small but I was alone so not a big deal. I felt like if I had been with someone else, we would have been bumping into each other. Room was clean and bathroom was decent size. Overall I would probably stay again.

If you eat at The Cheesecake Factory under the John Hancock Building, you can avoid the wait by going to the bar area and finding a seat there. You can order and eat there if you don't mind a smaller table or a seat at the bar.

Awesome location

Right on the river and Michigan ave. Rooms either face the river, or the Hard Rock hotel. If you are a tourist, you can get to the train or ride bus minutes away from the hotel. Not a lot of shopping near by Some restaurants available. Restaurant on the first floor is great. Corner Bakery was always crowded. A small Giordano's pizza location is a block away.
