Boutique luxury in the heart of the Gold Coast
In Chicago, the rule for downtown real estate is the closer to Lake Michigan, the more posh the address. Enter the Raffaello Hotel, a four-star hotel just steps from the lake and Magnificent Mile with a Michelin-rated chef, in-room spa services, executive suites and a 24-hour business center. Blending old-world aesthetics with modern conveniences, the hotel manages luxury and intimacy while being near the downtown hub. Stepping into the vintage building just off the tourist drag, guests are more likely to feel like Gold Coast residents than tourists. Raffaello Hotel offers Drumbar, a rooftop speakeasy-style inside lounge and outdoor garden terrace, found in the 18th floor.
Highlights
- Walk to the Magnificent Mile
- Next to the John Hancock Center
- Boutique hotel with a 24-hour business center and rooftop sundeck
- Upscale Italian fare at Pelago
- Sanctuary fitness center with Precor fitness equipment
Rooms
Staying in this vintage building poses several advantages. The Raffaello Hotel offers rooms with high ceilings and architectural details for a unique, high-class vintage stay. Butterscotch-hued bedding and drapes match the walls, while high ceilings --painted stark white--stun with their beam construction. All rooms feature rainfall showerheads, Gilchrest and Soames amenities, 32-inch LCD TV, iHome and iPod players and 340-count linens. Rooms, which come in king, double double and suite versions are hard-wire and Wi-Fi enabled.
Features
Any Chicagoan will encourage a newcomer to put dining and an architectural experience on the itinerary. At the Raffaello Hotel, both needs are satisfied thanks to Pelago, the upscale Italian seafood restaurant and the rooftop garden, which is open from late spring to late fall. From the sundeck, guests can take in glorious views of the skyline, including Navy Pier and the next door neighbor: the John Hancock Center.

Very nice surprise.
After spending nights in overpriced chain hotels with small bathrooms, and limited service, we arrived at the hotel and were greeted with a smiling face who quickly took charge of luggage, whew. Room was large and even had two chairs!! Bathroom was big, modern, and totally a change from chains. Staff was friendly. The restaurant in the hotel had the best ravioli I have ever had. Learned that they make their pasta fresh every day. Bravo! Minor negatives. Bed was installed backwards with a sharp edge. Cut leg!! Quickly remedied when complaint to front desk was corroborated by housekeeping staff. Room guide needs major revision. Phone numbers wrong. TV channel guide wrong. Needs way more useful information for guests, e.g., restaurants, close Starbucks, etc. Room reservations were a nightmare. Finally remedied by on duty manager.

Unbeatable location for the price.
I have stayed at this hotel before and really liked it. The restaurant opened just after my last stay; it is a great addition to the property; the food is wonderful. They have carved out a very small but charming bar out of one end of the lobby. Had a superb dirty martini with hand-stuffed blue cheese olives. No specific bar food right now but the room service menu is available for bar service.

Nice Design; Service Lacking
Decor was nice and location was okay. Just not up to par for high end hotel. Service people were nice - just overwhelmed. Didn't have the correct room ready for us - had to move us on day 2. 2 Tiny elevators for 15 floors of people - delays were frustrating. Valet service was sketchy.

Not remotely up to 4 star standards
This hotel doesn't cut it as a 4 star hotel. Issues:- Water pressure in shower was terrible, even after they claimed to have worked again. - We told them about sticky spots on carpet, very gross, again they claimed they fixed but didn't. - Elevator capacity insufficient so we often had a full elevator arrive and had to take the stairs. - I really don't think any 4 star hotel should charge for internet, particularly when it isn't wireless. It's like charging more for electricity in this day and age. When we complained about charge they did waive it, however. - Chipped paint on door and room.- No soap in room. Hello? In the interest of saying something nice, the beds were comfortable, and location good. But there are a lot of better 4 star hotels in same neighborhood. [...] For 10 bucks more we would have been a lot more happy.
