Grande dame of the Gold Coast and Chicago Home to Hollywood's Elite

This Gold Coast boutique hotel has long been a magnet for Hollywood's elite, drawing the likes of Frank Sinatra, Gary Sinise, Richard Gere and Vince Vaughn since 1926. Classic decor and an under-the-radar location in one of Chicago's poshest neighborhoods drive its appeal. Nearby Rush Street, with all its bars and restaurants, certainly doesn't hurt, either.

Highlights
  • Historic boutique hotel in the Gold Coast
  • Business center
  • High-speed Internet access
Rooms

The hotel sticks to traditional furnishings -- there are no shag rugs or zebra ottomans here. Look for mahogany nightstands and headboards, floral-printed drapes and jacquard sofas -- the style you might see in a Gold Coast townhouse. In some suites, kitchenettes, separate dining areas, balconies and full-size refrigerators are available. High-speed Internet can be accessed for a fee.

Dining

The Pump Room
The new food concept was created by world-renowned and James Beard award winning chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The restaurant will offer reasonably priced, delicious favorites in a relaxed, comfortable environment. A selection of the original Pump Room classics from 1938 will be re-created by Jean-Georges. He will also support local purveyors, regional flavors and offer a "farm to table" experience as well as a daily special chef's tasting menu of the most unique creations. At night, the restaurant's bar will be transformed into a supper club recapturing the glamor of the 30's and 40's with a modern twist. Offerings will include light tapas style food including Asian, Indian and other global specialties, exotic cocktails, international and domestic bottled and draught beer and great music. Guests can enjoy the Pump Room for Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, after work Happy Hour, Dinner, Late Night Supper and midnight omlettes.
Library
Reminiscent of 1950's American and European coffee houses and French patisseries, The Library houses a coffee bar during the day offering coffee drinks from around the globe (cafe con leche, latte, cappuccino, cafe au lait and more) with La Colombe Coffee's wide variety of traditional and exotic coffees from Brazil, Columbia, Honduras, Mexico, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Sumatra, Tanzania and Rwanda as well as housemade, morning and afternoon baked goods, pastries, sandwiches, sushi, and other specialties by Jean-George Vongerichten. Custom blackened steel coffee tables with custom handmade concrete tops and bleached oak cocktail tables with oil-rubbed bronze bases are perfect for enjoying coffee and a snack or an evening drink and light meal.

Try and miss on many levels

The hotel is very hip, urban, and "current". The staff is also young and hip. Unfortunately, it does not translate. We had terrible service from check in. They could not find our reservation. The cocktail waitresses/busboys were awful, unattentive, and vapid. Applying lipstick/chapstick during service? Please refrain. Upon our return to the hotel after dinner, we were questioned about our guest status and had to show a room key to even enter the hotel. I have never stayed somewhere remotely upscale that greets customers for the evening that way. Overall a huge disappointment.

Great Hotel

Great location and the staff are very nice. This hotel is very hopping at night and security was a bit of a pain after coming back at midnight from being out with friends. They made me show my room key (no worries) but after showing I was staying there they made me step back over the rope and walk around which was only 2 feet away!! Other then that the staff was great.

Where do I begin?

I went ahead and booked even though the reviews warned of the construction and poor service. I should have listened because they were right. If you like to wake up to construction noise at 7am then you are in luck. So many negatives I feel like I would bring myself down to an un-ladylike level so I wont list all. The only reason they can charge 150$ for a room that should have cost 45$ is because of the location. Please dont stay there at least til they are done with construction. They really need to tell people that up front. I will not stay there again just for that reason. If they could have been up front about their mess and noise I might have come back. But they acted like everything was fine. Not a very good charicteristic-(dishonesty)- dont you think?

Ambassador

The hotel is just ok. Stayed there for 5 days when visiting friends. They had a renovation going so there was no lobby, bar or anything. Just a decently furnished room for 200 usd. The renovation was not annoying but i think they ahould charge much less untill its done. You cant beat the location! Very convenient especially if u like chicqgo nightlife!

Do not consider this hotel

We couldn't get into our room until after 7 PM and when we did get into our room there were huge black stain on the carpets, the drapes had bugs stuck on them and were not white but grey. The tub had been at one time refinished because it was cracking and pealing and to fix the problem a mat was thrown over the top of the mess. The only saving grace was [...]who got us out of that room and into one of their renivated rooms which was adquate. A fine old historic hotel in the process of being redone cheaply in a modern motif. No one we talked to that stayed at this hotel would stay there again. One elevator working, which you can understand if it's under renovation but you had to go down to the basement and drag your bags up a flight to get to the street level. They had blocked off the stairway so in case of a fire I have no idea how they planned to evacuate the building.

Not what it was before

We traveled to Chicago to visit with our daughter who lives in the city. To our suprise what once was a lovely older hotel is now under major renovations. Gone is the lobby and gusts are required to walk down to the basement to get the one elevator that is working to the second floor to register. Our first room was recently renovated.....stark white walls, no amenities at all. Guests had to enter the room and find their way to the bed to turn on the light to the room. Modern furniture includes a bed that is close to the groud, a cold blck slab functioning a a desh and metal chair. No fride, coffee maker, iron, or even a picture on the stark white walls. We asked to change our room and then were put in one of the older suites on the 15th floor. While this room was attractive, we were greeted to jack hammers at 8 every morning. The staff were all very nice but the accommodations were lacking.

Convenient, comfortable, affordable

This hotel is very comfortable, clean and neat. It is close to downtown activities. The staff is helpful and friendly. I was disappointed that their room service has been discontinued. The hotel itself serves my purpose and I have stayed there three times and would stay there again.
