Classy in a great location
Infrequent, but experience traveller. Nov 23, 2009
I was in Chicago for business and decided to stay for the weekend. It has been years since my last visit and I was looking ... for a hotel that was reasonably priced while being in a central location to provide access to all of the attractions in/or near downtown. This hotel is 1 1/2 blocks from a Blue Line (direct run to O'Hare) station and only a short walk to Michigan Ave. The hotel well kept and appears to have been kept current over time and has a very modern feel. I was in a room with a king bed and had plenty of space for me and my things for the short stay. There was a small table with two chairs and a place to sit (see hotel's photos) at the end of the bed. Business travelers take note as there is no desk to work at and the table would not provide much room for a computer and additional info. The bathroom was well kept and very clean. No bath tub, but a roomy shower with a "rain" style shower head. If you drive into town and don't need your car, I would look for surface or deck parking near the hotel. The sign in front indicated $39/day for valet parking with unlimited in/out. That seemed a bit steep as I walked by a couple of lots within a 2 block radius with cheaper parking. I walked everywhere that I went and found the walks to be enjoyable, but at times long. The walk to Navy Pier was approximately 45 minutes - 1 hour and to the Shedd Aquarium was 20-30 minutes. If you don't mind the walks it is worth it as you pass by many of the Chicago highlights. The biggest criticism I have would be the continental breakfast. It is scheduled from 6-10, but arriving at 9:30 I found a couple pieces of fruit and plain bagels remaining. Can't say how it started, but it did seem a bit limited for such a nice hotel.

This tip came straight from one of the friendly valets... If you aren't in the mood to walk, there is a convenience store within a block that sells 24-hour bus passes. If you are only in town for a weekend, this will likely get you almost anywhere you plan to go in a much shorter time than walking.

I felt that this hotel was a bit over rated. I felt edgy when I first came to my room because the door was already proped ... open. I had to check the room before I let my friend enter. She felt very unsafe and uneasy. Every hotel I have been in before had either a VCR or DVD player and I was a bit suprised that this one didn't. Also, the bathroom was terrible. There was mold and mildew in the shower and the sink/counter area had obviously not been cleaned. I would also recommend the hotel to get more than just one public computer.

My wife and I went to Chicago for a relaxing/shopping weekend. Overall this hotel provided the rest and relaxation that we ... were looking for with a few exceptions. The TV was less than impressive! In a day when technology is at it's peak and there is a standard clock radio with an iPod docking station in each room, one would think that a tube television would no longer be present! An upgrade to a flat panel would be nice! The breakfast was less than dissapointing. It was supposed to run from 7am-10am. The first morning of our stay we went down at 9:40am (a little late, I admitt) and there was NOTHING left. The second morning we tried a little earlier 9:15am and the food was significantly running out. The "continental breakfast" of bagels, bananas, and apples was poorly planned. When offering such slim pickings for breakfast the hotel should at least plan to have enough for each guest. Finally, the views on the website are gourgeous, but do not be decieved...they are not the views from each room!

Shopping is a short distance if you want to go to State St. and shop. There are several good shops in that area. However, if you are looking for the Michigan Ave. shopping experience be prepared to walk a bit there and back!

I needed a place to stay that was easy for me to get to interviews uptown and downtown. I got a great night's sleep and made ... both interviews well ahead of schedule due to proximity to public transportation. The room was quiet and wonderfully furnished with a king bed, ironing board to prepare my attire and internet to do my research. I will be staying here again on my next visit.

Was in Chicago on vacation with my fiancé for two nights. The hotel was clean and well kept with very big, and nice rooms. ... Great with free internet!! Location was OK and close to shopping. It was noisy, though, both from traffic and from the corridor outside the door (the doors made a lot of noice when you closed it if you weren't really careful.) Breakfast was not good. One sort of bread, with no ham or cheese to put on, only butter. The muffins were good, though. The man working there seemed to be more interested in talking to two cute girls than make sure that there was any coffee cups or orange juice left. To sum up, this hotel was good but noisy, and don't take it only because of the included breakfast.

Hotel Blake is in a great location! Nice building and very friendly staff. Checked in late after a nasty flight and Bellman ... sent us out of our way in the rain for dinner. Later learned that he got "credit" from the establishment for our meal...rather disappointing since we came back soaked and could have gone somewhere closer! Other than that the staff was very friendly and responsive. The room was not the best because of the loud HVAC and it really didn't work well to boot! One of the 2 elevators was "iffy" as to whether it worked or not.

This is my second stay at The Blake, so I obviously like the hotel. It is very "modern" in decor and has a good location on ... S. Dearborn in Chicago. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are great. My first stay had a room with a view of the hideous Harold Washington Library... hideous in design but makes for a great view. This stay had a view of a brick wall and the alley. The garbage trucks backed up to pick up the refuse at 4:30 a.m..... but my daughter slept through it. (We were touring college choices.) Big bathrooms, lotsa living space. Very comfortable and convenient to downtown Chicago. I'd stay here again but ask for a room over the front of the hotel.

Conan the super traveler Sep 29, 2009
The staff were attentive, polite, and informative. The location was right downtown and very affordable. The only issue I had ... was with a small, chronic water leak that was in the wall by the closet. It was probably a drip line for the A/C or something like that. Carpet was barely damp right around it and the wall coverings were slightly bubbled. As soon as I brought it to the attention of the staff they said they would take care of it immediatly. They offered to move me, but I declined. It wasn't that bad, just slighty annoying.

If you're coming from the airport, take the train. It's FASTER than the stupid shuttle. Traffic is awful most of the time with road construction. Talk to locals or staff at the Airport and they can help you find a train. Cab or walk, it's just a block from the train.
