With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its vaulted Italianate ceilings, and glimmering 'Gold Room' banquet hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the "Home of Presidents" due to its popularity with both Roosevelt's, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it's been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audiovisual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center. On-site eating options are globally diverse (Rafael's Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle into a leather back armchair with a bourbon, or take your shots at the dartboard in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R&R.

Neighborhood
Across the street from Grant Park and the famous Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza rests on the main thoroughfare and shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue, aka, the Magnificent Mile. The hotel is walking distance from world-renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and the fascinating Field Museum. Found on the banks of Lake Michigan, the Field Museum is the home of "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered, as well as a life-size Maori meeting house.
Hints and tips
The Congress is frequently nicknamed 'the most haunted hotel in Chicago,' and budding paranormal detectives should request a room in the oldest part of the building, the South Tower, for the 'highest chance' of ghostly activity.

Be on the lookout for characters like notorious murder victim Peg Leg Johnny, or test your courage near the 12th floor room which was allegedly closed down due to paranormal activity.

Excellent Chicago getaway!

We went to Soldier Field for a concert and the hotel is very accessible. The staff are very friendly and courteous giving us directions especially the head of the Human Resources. He was so patient directing us where to go to reach the hotel until we reached the hotel door. Fantastic job especially that kind of traffic we encountered.

Pleasantly surprised

The location of this hotel was great for access to shopping and right across from Grant Park. The hotel is old but has a style of it's own with the architecture of the building. The staff was very helpful and friendly and the bathrooms had recently been updated and were kept very clean.

Take the time to see the Gold Room at the hotel where special events are held. Close enough to walk to Millenium Park, shopping on Michigan Ave, and the Sunday brunch in the Gazebo Restaurant on-site was great.

Perfect Location, Location, Location!

Hotel staff was helpfull in giving directions to and from the Airport. We has 3 rooms, 1 room had an old smell to it, the other rooms were fine. Hotel is still slowly remodeling the rooms. Nice Flat panel TV's in rooms. Large spacious rooms with 10' tall ceilings. One of the Electrician on staff was getting off work, but when we asked him a question he went above and beyond and took us for a tour of the hotels grand ballrooms and told us stories of the hotel, which was very interesting. For the budget concious traveler, this is a great hotel, was clean and respectable and a perfect location for seeing the city. We used the trains to arrive from Midway Airport departed on the other train from O'hare Airport. Much easer and cheaper and less stressful driving than renting and parking a car. Chicago had a great transportation system. People were nice and friendly. We stopped and helped a lady who had a flat tire and she was so thankful for our concern, she gave all of us a great big hug. Now that is Friendly. Very easy travel. We walked to and from Navy Pier the 1st day. Second day we used Chicagos Free Trolley to get around. What we saved on the hotel we were able to take the tours and go to the attractions. We took the River and Lake site seeing tours, saw the Chinese circus acts, rode the ferris wheel, not enough time to do the bike tour like we wanted. Saw the shiny stainless steel Bean. We spent 5 days and boy did it go by fast. Would definitely visit Chicago again.

great view

We paid the little extra for a lake view, and then got bumped up to a suite. It was fabulous; a beautiful view of the lake, the city, and Art Institute. The room was decorated in antiques, was clean and very comfortable.

Old-World Comfort & Courtesy On The Lakefront

The Congress Hotel was perfect for our needs. The venerable old building retains more than a trace of its 19th century grandeur, although the days of presidents stopping there may be past. The room we stayed in was large and very, very quiet, due to the quality of its construction. (They just don't build 'em like that anymore...) High ceilings, a large bay window which gave us a partial view of the lake, and antiseptic cleanliness were welcome. The marbled lobby bustled; the old fashioned pile carpet of the winding halls added to the atmosphere; the elevator was fast and frequent; and the staff was uniformly impeccable. It goes without saying that the proximity to Chicago's major attractions and outlying neighborhoods was a huge plus. Oh, and the King bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever slept on, and our request for an extra blanket was met politely and within five minutes time.

Don't miss Buddy Guy's Legends just a block or so away -- great, authentic blues aside, you get a right fine meal; if you like down home barbecue with big time portions, this is the place to go.

July 11th W/E at Congress Plaza Hotel

What a beautiful hotel. Yes the location is the best. Close to Birmingham Fountain and Grant Park. Millenium Park - all within walking distance. Clean rooms and great bar/lounge area. We had a great view of the Park and Lake Michigan from our hotel room. Only down-side was the noise, you could hear conversations in the hallways and rooms adjacent to our room.

Walking Distance

Hotel has a beautiful lobby with mosaic tile ceiling that is worth contemplating. The corner rooms are a little bigger with antique furniture and tiled bathrooms in all rooms. Lake view room is worth the upgrade for the nightly views of Buckingham Fountain. The hotel restaurant was very good in quality of food but short on number of waiters so you'll wait a little longer to get your order in and delivered. There are several good restaurants within walking distance (Artist Cafe 1/2 block west on Michigan, for Gyros go 1 block west on Congress & 1/2 block north for the best value & flavor, and for Chicago Pizza and family style dinners try Pizano's 1/2 block west across from the Art Museum which should not be missed). You can walk to the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, Art Museum, Buckingham Fountain, and Millenium Park.
