grand old hotel, a bit down at the heels

I love this hotel, partly because it is old and reminds one of a bygone era. The location is fabulous. It's clean but hasn't been remodeled since the 1950s, so if you need everything to be brand spanking new you won't enjoy it. Nice bar with original copper top. Rooms are relatively large for a big city hotel and many of the rooms have views of Grant Park and the lake. My only complaint is that my room was too hot and I couldn't turn the heat down or off, only the fan.

location, faded grandeur

I love the Congress Plaza because of the location, the size and comfort of the rooms, and the views. It's a grand old hotel and unbeatable for the price. Under $100 on Michigan Ave. overlooking Grant Park--great! Some people will find it too old-fashioned, and maybe a little ragged, but I love it. The bar is also classic and gorgeous. Friendly service.

Weekend Getaway

Hotel stay was ok, there were employees on strike out front when we pulled up which made us second guess our choice. Overall it was nice and cozy with a beautiful view.

Pick somewhere else

we spent the night here. Our check in was good. Beyond that, everything that could go wrong did while we were there. When we entered our room the door to enter banged into the bathroom door. There's about a 2 foot clearance between the 2. First thing we noticed was wiring hanging from the tv on the wall. Noticed the brass plates with the room numbers were painted on when the doors were repainted. In the morning, Coffee was the order of hte day except coffee was already in the pot, made from the previous people who knows how long that was ago. I then tried to take a shower--light switch didn't work. Once maintenance got the power fixed, turned on the water only to have the shower head spew water everywhere. Clerk at the front desk told me..."sorry" for everything. She couldn't do anything and there was no manager available. We will not go back there.

Impromptu Trip

Planned an overnight party weekend in Chicago the week of, found a great price for the hotel. The was the only GREAT thing about it. The hotel was "ok" at best. It was very dated, older decor, no microwave, no fridge, small elevators and dim hallways. Wouldn't say it was the worst, but would not recommend this place to anyone.
