With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its vaulted Italianate ceilings, and glimmering 'Gold Room' banquet hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the "Home of Presidents" due to its popularity with both Roosevelt's, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it's been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audiovisual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center. On-site eating options are globally diverse (Rafael's Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle into a leather back armchair with a bourbon, or take your shots at the dartboard in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R&R.

Neighborhood
Across the street from Grant Park and the famous Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza rests on the main thoroughfare and shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue, aka, the Magnificent Mile. The hotel is walking distance from world-renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and the fascinating Field Museum. Found on the banks of Lake Michigan, the Field Museum is the home of "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered, as well as a life-size Maori meeting house.
Hints and tips
The Congress is frequently nicknamed 'the most haunted hotel in Chicago,' and budding paranormal detectives should request a room in the oldest part of the building, the South Tower, for the 'highest chance' of ghostly activity.

Be on the lookout for characters like notorious murder victim Peg Leg Johnny, or test your courage near the 12th floor room which was allegedly closed down due to paranormal activity.

Walking Distance

Hotel has a beautiful lobby with mosaic tile ceiling that is worth contemplating. The corner rooms are a little bigger with antique furniture and tiled bathrooms in all rooms. Lake view room is worth the upgrade for the nightly views of Buckingham Fountain. The hotel restaurant was very good in quality of food but short on number of waiters so you'll wait a little longer to get your order in and delivered. There are several good restaurants within walking distance (Artist Cafe 1/2 block west on Michigan, for Gyros go 1 block west on Congress & 1/2 block north for the best value & flavor, and for Chicago Pizza and family style dinners try Pizano's 1/2 block west across from the Art Museum which should not be missed). You can walk to the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, Art Museum, Buckingham Fountain, and Millenium Park.

Historic beauty

The Congress Plaza Hotel was a wonderful experience. It is over 100 years old and has retained much of it's original details - mosaic floors, tall woodwork. The view from our room looked out over the fountain in the park and Lake Michigan beyond. The closet was huge and had two rods for clothes as well as a suitcase stand. The furniture was vintage and had lots of room for our clothes. The pillows on the bed were heavenly. We could walk to Navy Pier and the Magnificent Mile.

Great, safe, vacation, location

My experience at the Congress was fantastic. It was my first time visiting Chicago and the location of the hotel to sightseeing destinations was perfect. The room was clean. The shower was hot. The toilet flushed. Service was excellent. I would definitely stay again.

Very nice hotel for money and location

The Congress Plaza hotel was very nice and clean. The hotel staff was great and there were no major problems. This hotel is near everything. It is right across the street from Grant Park. It is also walking distance to the Miracle Mile. We also could walk to just about everywhere ( Hancock Tower, Sears Tower, Lake etc.)and it was only a city block from the Library train station which is on the Orange Line which comes straight from Midway airport. There are also many public buses that go down the street in front of hotel. I would definitely stay here again.

Great Chicago Location

The rooms were bigger than expected (very clean) and I had a lovely view of Grant Park (downtown). The hotel is close to the water front and only a 15 minute can ride to Wriggley field. The only point of contention is that the mattress was hard as a rock. I suppose you could say that it is good for one's back, but I found myself stiff as board in the morning. Otherwise I was very pleased with the location, staff and recommendation.

Taste of Chicago best location

Art Institute of Chicago, The Cloud, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium - all were in easy walking distance from this hotel. TOC was happening right outside the hotel doors! Navy Pier was an easy and fun 45 minute walk up Magnificant Mile. Chna Town, where we enjoyed a delicious morning Dim Sum, was only two subway stops away from conveniently located Harrison stop (red line). Try Rosebuds restuarant (Italian) 720 N.Rush and make sure to do Chicago First Lady Architectural boat tour along the Chicago River. Trips to and from O'Hare could not have been easier (blue line/Jackson stop). My only wish - that the hot water was a bit hotter. The Hotel was a classic beauty and my city view suite was huge. Thanks [...] for putting me on to this hotel.

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

Study up in advance on the difference between the the larger city subway system and the Metra system (largely designed for commuters and gets you closer to venues right along Lake Michigan). We used the Metra system to get to the BodyWorlds exhibit at the Museum of Science and Energy - awesome!

Great in Chicago

The hotel checked us in at 10.00am. The staff was largely excellent, and they were certainly friendly. The hotel is one stop toward the Loop from Roosevelt, which is where we exited for the Field. The Art Institute is a short walk. The restaurant is okay, though there is a Thai place a block away on Wabash that has better food at a better price. The proximity to the Red Line made getting around where we wanted to go a relatively easy matter. This included getting from and to Midway.

The Museum complex including the Field, the Adler and the Shedd is decently close, and the Art Institute is a short walk.
