With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its vaulted Italianate ceilings, and glimmering 'Gold Room' banquet hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the "Home of Presidents" due to its popularity with both Roosevelt's, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it's been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audiovisual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center. On-site eating options are globally diverse (Rafael's Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle into a leather back armchair with a bourbon, or take your shots at the dartboard in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R&R.

Neighborhood
Across the street from Grant Park and the famous Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza rests on the main thoroughfare and shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue, aka, the Magnificent Mile. The hotel is walking distance from world-renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and the fascinating Field Museum. Found on the banks of Lake Michigan, the Field Museum is the home of "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered, as well as a life-size Maori meeting house.
Hints and tips
The Congress is frequently nicknamed 'the most haunted hotel in Chicago,' and budding paranormal detectives should request a room in the oldest part of the building, the South Tower, for the 'highest chance' of ghostly activity.

Be on the lookout for characters like notorious murder victim Peg Leg Johnny, or test your courage near the 12th floor room which was allegedly closed down due to paranormal activity.

Old Fashioned Charm

This is an old hotel. If you can appreciate it's ambiance like we do you will really like your stay. From the marble on the floor to the logo'd carpeting in the halls and wallpaper in the room this place is like hotel's used to be. The room was clean and fresh and the bathroom was remodled and modern. The cable in the room was a bit limited compared to what you are probably used to but you're not in downtown Chicago to spend a lot of time in the room.

Great location

It is close to the bus lines and right off the lake. The hotel is historic (i.e. old) and the rooms small but the service was good and was fairly quiet. Didn't get much street noise at all. The restaurant was close the entire weekend we were there but the lounge was fairly busy. I will definitely consider staying here again when I want to be downtown.

There is tons to do in Chicago and although we walked to the museum complex, the hotel is really just a short cab ride or bus ride there. There is lots of good eating nearby and it's close to the theater.

Lovers Get Away

I found the Congress Plaza Hotel charming in that it is a beautiful old fashioned hotel with high cellings and marbel floors. The bathroom was compleatly refinished and the room was cleaned each day without our asking. The only disapointing event was when we went down to the bar, ordered some appietizers and drinks. The head bar tender tried to tip himself with our remaining cash from our bill and upon being confronted, he stated that he deserved it and then tried to pass his ill manners off by trying to fault another bar tender. The picketers in front of the hotel had more manners than he did. Our tip use a credit card so that this can not happen to you.

Amazing view, great staff, old hotel

The view on the lake side was amazing: Buckingham Fountain, Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museun, Millennium Park, the two Indian statues at Grant Park, not to mention Lake Michigan! The staff was very friendly, helpful, courteous, and professional. If you get a kick out of staying in eccentric old hotels, you will love this place. If you need brand new McConstruction offering the very latest in boring homogenized shades of off-white and beige, steer clear of the Congress. This place is perfectly situated next to all manner of transportation and attractions and has great character and history! They even have a sealed up room #666. I wondered if it still has a window.

Everything is a long walk. Check before arrival to see if the free trolley is running. If not figure out the bus system. Cabs cost minimum $10 almost to any location for shopping, dinner, etc.
