With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its vaulted Italianate ceilings, and glimmering 'Gold Room' banquet hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the "Home of Presidents" due to its popularity with both Roosevelt's, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it's been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audiovisual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center. On-site eating options are globally diverse (Rafael's Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle into a leather back armchair with a bourbon, or take your shots at the dartboard in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R&R.

Neighborhood
Across the street from Grant Park and the famous Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza rests on the main thoroughfare and shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue, aka, the Magnificent Mile. The hotel is walking distance from world-renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and the fascinating Field Museum. Found on the banks of Lake Michigan, the Field Museum is the home of "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered, as well as a life-size Maori meeting house.
Hints and tips
The Congress is frequently nicknamed 'the most haunted hotel in Chicago,' and budding paranormal detectives should request a room in the oldest part of the building, the South Tower, for the 'highest chance' of ghostly activity.

Be on the lookout for characters like notorious murder victim Peg Leg Johnny, or test your courage near the 12th floor room which was allegedly closed down due to paranormal activity.

Great Location

Congress Plaza Hotel is very old and, therefore lacking the new amenities so many hotel chains offer. But, you can't beat the superb location, the very friendly staff and the great hotel bar!

Family vacation

We asked for and received a free upgrade to 2-bedroom king suite, which made our stay more relaxing and comfortable with our 8-year old daughter who wanted her own space. Room was near the L, so noisy in he morning, but otherwise very comfortable and roomy. Wish we had a refrigerator for breakfast food. On-site restaurant is pricey. Work out room is old, but did the trick. Do not pay more than $150/night for this hotel. Location was fantastic and convenient to take a break and drop stuff of before heading out on next adventure.

2nd stay at a decent hotel

The king bed was the most comfortable, and although several areas need updating, the location is great. I would avoid the lounge completely, as the drinks are overpriced and the atmosphere is poor. I should be able to enjoy a beer at the bar without seeing all of the dirty glasses that need to be washed.

Very nice hotel, a little far from shopping

The hotel was great! the view of the lake was amazing! the staff was friendly and there is a bar and a gift shop. I personally like to go shopping on the magnificent mile and state street, it was a little far of a walk to get to the mile but totally doable in good shoes. would stay here again! parking is $20 cheaper than most other places for valet which is a nice cost saver.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

Definitely recommend eating at Eatly! its on Ohio street and a little different than your normal Chicago experience and a little pricey but definitely worth the walk and the money!

Long weekend in Chicago

Great location. We have stayed on the Magnificent Mile, and that is in the hub of the shopping and downtown activity. Congress Plaza was right across the street from Grant Park, close to the lake and the Art Institute. Although the grandeur of the hotel has faded a little, the staff was pleasant and responded quickly and efficiently to the one problem we had (outlet in bathroom didn't work) - it was fixed within 1 hour of when I called. Shopping on State St. is about 5 blocks away, same for the lake. We took our coffee and sat on the lake, watching the boats. Also, we biked on runners' path next to the lake. Took a ferry to Chinatown - excellent. Saw a show at Second City - wonderful. Took cab to Green Street Meats Friday night - get there early. It fills up fast. Also there are 2 locations for Big n Little's (named for the stature of the owners) if you are in the mood for great food.

Weekend in Chicago for Cardnials Baseball

Easy, comfortable. Only complaint is the water pressure in the shower could be better, but nothing horrible. Great room. I love the design of the hotel.

Lovely, but dated

The old charm is great, but upon closer inspection many of the areas in the hotel are just old and in poor condition. The bed was extremely comfortable, and if the water hadn't have taken forever to get warm I would have rated it much higher

Shopping tip: Not Applicable

Shop in the old downtown in Chicago. Much more interesting and better deals than the magnificent mile
