With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its vaulted Italianate ceilings, and glimmering 'Gold Room' banquet hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the "Home of Presidents" due to its popularity with both Roosevelt's, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it's been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audiovisual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center. On-site eating options are globally diverse (Rafael's Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle into a leather back armchair with a bourbon, or take your shots at the dartboard in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R&R.
Location
Across the street from Grant Park and the famous Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza rests on the main thoroughfare and shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue, aka, the Magnificent Mile. The hotel is walking distance from world-renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and the fascinating Field Museum. Found on the banks of Lake Michigan, the Field Museum is the home of "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered, as well as a life-size Maori meeting house.

The Congress is frequently nicknamed 'the most haunted hotel in Chicago,' and budding paranormal detectives should request a room in the oldest part of the building, the South Tower, for the 'highest chance' of ghostly activity.

Be on the lookout for characters like notorious murder victim Peg Leg Johnny, or test your courage near the 12th floor room which was allegedly closed down due to paranormal activity.

nice family trip bad hotel experience

The experience I had at the Congress Plaza Hotel was everything but pleasant. The room we stayed in as well as the entire hotel for that matter was in God awful condition. Never have I seen a hotel that was in great need for cleaning and repairs. Sleeping there was a matter of great difficulty in that neither myself or other companion could not sleep due to the constant noise that was occurring throughout the night. I truly believe that this is the worst hotel in Chicago. Any guest who stays here is definitely not receiving the true value of their dollar. A hotel as disgusting as the Congress also has no right to be charging $44 for valet parking, which had terrible service and customer relation skills.

Good Value Great Location

This hotel is good for its price, but could use some updating. Overall the staff was helpful and the location was perfect. The room was a bit on the beat up side and the water pressure was iffy in the shower.

Great old hotel, beautiful view

I had a great time here. It surpassed my expectations, the view was fantastic. Stupidly I had a car because I was doing some country touring - but the parking garage they contract with worked really well and was super convenient. The bar in the lobby was nice, all the staff was very friendly. My only complaint was that I wanted to open the windows for some fresh cool lake breeze but there were huge spiders on all 3 windows... I opened them anyway but I kept an eye out. Also felt like the a/c or heater units were a little outdated for the price. But again the hotel is beautiful and I was very satisfied.

Awesome stay

Wow! It's a great one as hotel located exactly at center point of millennium park. In front of hotel is the beautiful fountain at Grant park. And nearby there are lots of attraction areas. Cafe, shops and public transport are around and convenience.

Right in the heart of town

This is a grand old hotel right in the heart of Michigan Avenue and its amenities. As an old hotel, it has charm and age. The old elevators do not always work, so only some are operational. The used supplies (glasses, cups, coffee) do not always get replaced. But, I was sorry to leave and would return in a heartbeat. It is really convenient and almost elegant.

1st Trip to Chicago

In town to catch up with an old military friend and to catch a few Cub games. Very nice receptionists who went out of her way to find a room with a view as I was staying there for 4 nights. Easy check in / out. Comfortable beds after a long day of sightseeing etc... Will be back

Bachelorette party weekend

The hotel was a bit older and everyone was very polite. However for the price nothing was included. 200$ and not even a continental breakfast? The room was older and just smell, nothing fancy. We were tired we only stayed one night...I wouldn't recommend staying here if u really want to unwind and enjoy yourself. The room was too small for a family but still a tight fit for 2 girls. I'd recommend this place only if you were staying one night and leaving out the next day. It's one of those places u should probably just use to sleep!

Pas Key Never Worked

This was an old hotel in desperate need of renovation!! The hallway and room's appearance was dark and dingy. Pass key never worked. Every day, we had to go down to the registration desk and get the key reactivated. We were reimbursed for this inconvenience. I would not recommend this hotel.
