Affordable hotel south of Chicago's bustling downtown area
Chicago's Essex Inn has an ideal location ideal on Michigan Avenue, just a few blocks south of the more congested areas of downtown Chicago. Grant Park is across the street, along with many famous Chicago attractions, including Millennium Park and the Art Institute. Sleek in design, the Essex Inn boasts a metal and glass lobby, floor-to-ceiling windows with city views and an impressive atrium housing a large pool. ADA-compliant areas are also available at Chicago's Essex Inn.
Highlights
  • Great value in the city for its location and amenities
  • Rooftop pool available year-round
  • Large, well-equipped fitness room overlooks pool deck
Rooms
A color palette grounded in rich orange and brown earth tones keeps the scene warm. Floor-to-ceiling windows play up the hotel’s strongest asset, the city views. Flat-screen TVs and refrigerators are standard amenities in each room at Chicago's Essex Inn. Guests can have complimentary access to wireless Internet. Rooms also feature ADA-compliant areas.
Features
In a metropolis like Chicago, pools and green space are precious real estate. Chicago's Essex Inn has both.

From the garden, guests enjoy skyline views of Grant Park and Lake Michigan from comfortable patio chairs and tables. Next to the pool is a large fitness center, featuring bikes, treadmills, weight machines, free weights, as well as six TVs.

A good night

I enjoyed my night at the Essex and found it in a great spot near Columbia University and the museum and park complex. Also very close to the Red line if traveling to one of the baseball games. I always stay north of the river so this was a great chance to experience a different side of Chicago

Great vacation

The people were very helpful and courteous. The Essex is in the perfect location. We walked to the Field museum and the aquarium. We walked to the millenium park and the theater district (Macy's Marshal Fields). My whole family loved the hotel. The rooms were a little small.

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

We took the Chicago Trolley and Double Decker tours. They have tours all day and you can get off and look around then get back on. You can get tickets right on the courner. You can get multi-day tickets that are good for any tour any time. We didn't use the Grayline tours they do not have as many stops.

Mother/Daughter Chicago getaway

Good location to get to everything. We really enjoyed the walk to Water Tower, to Millenium Park and to State Street. Got our exercise in for sure. I wish the parking was a less expensive for hotel guests, but the service for getting your car in and out was good. Saw Mary Poppins at Cadillac Theatre - GREAT!! Went to a White Sox game, met up with friends and family.

Great for Seasoned Travelers

Quaint location and anachronistic throw back to the 1950's. An older property but well maintained. Staff shows their pride in their hotel and their jobs. Exceptional directions and very helpful front desk and bell service. Would gladly stay there again.

worth it to be in chicago's center!

The room was great, clean, quiet despite celebrating soccer game on Saturday. The fitness center was good too. Naming every floor after an artist, such as Monet, adds an original touch. In Savoy grill, however, food (breakfast) was good but the wait staff could have been slightly more attentive.

good and bad

This hotel was a weird mix of very nice and rather unpleasant. The WiFi hook up was an additional charge, and the gentleman at the desk did NOT bother to mention that it only allowed one computer to hook up, so it was difficult for both of us to check email, etc. The room was tiny, but the mattress and bedding were very comfortable. The bathroom, however was so small as to be awkward and very uncomfortable. Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, was that given the extensive fitness center and pool complex, there was NO hot tub. Parking ran $37.00 per night, plus tip, so on the expensive end, and there was no coffee shop or convenience store close at hand for snacks or breakfast. There was no carafe for the in-room coffee maker, so it was a hike for morning coffee. Soda machines did not work, except in the pool area.

Grant Park is right across the street, and is very nice for walking. Most other attractions were either long walks, or required transportation.

Comfy and convenient overall

First the good: The Essex is clean, comfortable, and convenient. Everything you need for a nice hotel stay in downtown Chicago. The beds are soft, the furniture is tasteful and modern, and the showers have plenty of pressure. There is plenty of public parking nearby, and there are several Metro stops within walking distance. Now the bad: The only major complaint is the noise. We were nine floors up and still woken up by the sound of buses idling across the street. Furthermore, when people in the neighboring room were arguing/playing we could hear it distinctly. We could even tell which Darkness song they woke up to at six in the morning. Beyond that, the WiFi rate is a little steep. It is not a spacious hotel; so if you're planning to spend a great deal of time in your room, it may not be the place. But if you are just looking for a place to crash after a day of business or exploring the city, you could do much worse.

NIce hotel

We stayed in this hotel which was located downtown. We visited the Navy Pier which was beautiful. We rode on the double decker bus awesome way to see downtown Chicago. We ate at Gino's which was the best pizza I have ever eaten. The only thing was parking is hard to find downtown so either catch a cab or walk. Valet parking is the only way to park downtown so it gets expensive. Chicago is very beautiful I can't wait to go back!!
