Really disappointing

I travelled a long way to find that the room I had reserved had been given to someone else. Not happy.

Big on Concept, Short on Execution

This decor and atmosphere of this hotel was so unlike the Amalfi Coast that the name is nearly ironic. In addition, the room temperatures are stuck at 70 degrees, the drains didn't really work and my view was of a brick wall. And as far as the cocktail hour, there was a very long line for a small buffet and nowhere to sit... the concierge -- I'm sorry, experience designer -- was sort of snotty too. Yes, they are called Experience Designers.

A cold shower on a cold morning

Needs that special something like... Hot Water....I am not picky, but a hot shower is a must. Room was drafty, sink was cracked in room 325 and did I mention the cold shower...wow, that's better than a cup of strong expresso..

Could be better

While the Amalfi has some nice touches, including a very nice staff and big rooms, I found it overall to be an average to below-average experience. Small things like dirty carpets and a dysfunctional toilet were annoying. But I think the deal killer for me is the hotel walls and exterior are paper thin, so noises are accentuated, both from outside the room, in the hallway, and from neighboring hotel rooms. I don't think my neighbors were being particularly loud, but you could hear then all too clearly when they where in the room. I will not stay there again when in Chicago.

decent, but overpriced

the amalfi tries to be a hip, modern hotel but misses the boat and needs some remodeling. that being said, the beds were comfortable, the bathroom was clean, and the amenities (continental breakfast each floor, happy hour with open bar, free wifi, gym, etc) were decent. i just think for the price it doesn't quite meet the bar. it is right next to rick bayless' empire of restaurants (topolobampo, frontera grill, xoco) and for that it's worth it!

I was bumped during the restaurant show.

My stay would have been more enjoyable had the manager not given my room to somebody else and offer me the Omni Orrington in Evanston. My business meetings were near the Amalfi so I could not do that. So I spent the night at a coworkers condo. The next two nights had rain but no surprises. The manager told me I was going to receive a bunch of free stuff...then disappeared

definitely boutique-y

You definitely get the feel that its upscale with the luxurious rooms, decor and snobby staff. Though, to be fair, the bartender at complimentary cocktail hour was very friendly - which was opposite of the lobby staff. I booked online and got a deal, but they rub it in by putting you in a back alley-view room even though the place wasn't full - and where the gargage pickup woke me up at 3 AM.

Brief stay

Hotel staff was great, but as I had read in other reviews, the property is getting worn. The carper in our room was torn and worn out in spot and the shower/tub drained poorly. The hotel is pet friendly, and the previous user of the room must have brought a cat as my eyes itched and watered. Nice place, but needs some updating and cleaning.

Good Location But...

The Amalfi is in a great location in the heart of the River North neighborhood and in easy walking distance to the Loop, transit, shopping, entertainment and tons of great restaurants. Unfortunately it is also right next door to a large, popular bar, and on the weekend I stayed there, there was a lot of late night noise, drunken patrons smoking and blocking the sidewalks, and even a few fights and thrown beer bottles. The room was comfortable but needed a bit more attention in the cleaning department: the bathroom door was filthy and there were noticeable stains on the carpet and on one of the chairs. The room was also very dark with inadequate lighting. The hotel's exercise facilities are very nice and the complementary breakfast on each floor is also a nice amenity. The staff responded quickly to the few requests I had (replacing a broken iron and providing some tooth paste and clean towels), but did not seem particularly friendly or welcoming. The fridge in the room was tiny and completely packed with hotel-supplied drinks and snacks. When I asked if housekeeping could clear out the courtesy bar supplies from the packed fridge so that I could store some of my own food and drinks for my week-long stay, I was told I would have to pay $25 extra and might still be charged each day for the "missing" overpriced contents of the fridge. Despite the great location I would probably not stay here again. This is supposed to be a four star hotel but my stay did not feel like a four star experience.
