After a hassle, our stay was great

The description on a discount t travel site showed a jacuzzi tub in the King Suite overlooking the Mississippi River. Seemed like a great deal for such an upscale and historic place. We arrived before check in time and were told there would be a short wait. No big deal, we were early. But over an hour later, after check-in time, the room still wasn't ready. When we finally got our keys, we arrived in a room with a shower only and merely a glimpse of the river. I called to explain that the room wasn't what we expected. I even offered to pay extra to upgrade to the room pictured on the travel site. I was told there were no vacancies (on a Sunday night) . My better half went down to the front desk to speak to the manager. We were upgraded to the room we expected at no extra charge. It exceeded our expectations, but it took us a while to get there.

Great stay in Dubuque

The ambiance of this historic hotel is really great. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and quiet. The staff are well trained and go out of their way to be helpful. The location is very close to the River Museum and the art museum. We enjoyed walking to the little shops near the lift. The restaurant was very good. We will stay again.

beautiful hotel, needs improvement.

Beautiful hotel: We love the dubuque area. I love the hotel julian because it is an important part of the dubuque history. It is an absolutely beautiful hotel. The pool area was perfect, pool water was a nice temperature, and I loved the hot tub. The room was very small, but pretty. Views on north and south side of the building are stunning. Needs improvement: There was a dirty coffee cup in our room that had not been washed. I did report this to the front desk and they offered no response, not an apology, not a discount, nothing. However the most concerning was the way we were treated by the staff at the desk. The trainee at the front desk was staring at my husband and then turned her back to us as we walked away, at which point I noticed she was doing, so I stopped and watched her, when she thought we were out of sight she laughed and made a rude comment about my husband and the way he looked. My husband has longer hair and a large red beard which she thought was funny. A lot of the staff and the guests there were very stuffy and judged us by the look of my husband and maybe possibly by the fact that we weren't dressed up. We had been hiking eight miles and wanted to stay at this nice hotel to get cleaned up and relax. People who work in the service industry should learn to treat all people as just that, people. You do not know anyone as well as you may think by judging them. Had I felt respected while I was there, I would have dined at their restaurant, Caroline's and tipped graciously, however that did not happen because of our appearance. Shame on them. So very disapointed.
