The historic Hotel Fort Des Moines was built in 1919, and after an extensive renovation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Over the years, the hotel has hosted celebrities such as Mae West, Richard Nixon, Jack Kennedy and Charles Lindbergh. Today, the smoke-free hotel offers free high-speed Internet, ballrooms for meetings and events and an on-site restaurant. The Des Moines hotel is connected to the four-mile long, climate-controlled skywalk system in the city.
Location
The Hotel Fort Des Moines is located in downtown Des Moines and is part of the skywalk system.
Dining
The on-site Django restaurant serves French-style food such as steak frites and duck cassoulet and has no corkage fee. Monday through Friday 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. is happy hour with $1 oysters and $5 martinis. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday and dinner on the weekends. There is also a lounge, brewpub and coffee bar at the Hotel Fort Des Moines.
Rooms
The smoke-free rooms at the Hotel Fort Des Moines are modern interpretations of a historic space. Dark blue carpeting and an end-of-bed chest contrast with a bright white comforter and white sheer curtains. Free high-speed Internet, voice mail and coffee-makers are standard in guest rooms and suites. Suites also include a mini-refrigerator, a microwave and a sofa. Pets are not allowed.
Property features
The pool, whirlpool and sauna at Hotel Fort Des Moines are closed for an indefinite period of time for renovations. There is a courtesy van for the downtown area and airport.

Concert stay

I've stayed at this hotel several times before for conventions. It's a very quiet hotel right in the center of downtown Des Moines. We attended a concert at Hoyt Sherman Place and the hotel provided a free shuttle to the site. Much appreciated.

Horrible

Room cost me $170 and no A/C (been broke for 6 wks) and no shuttle as told. Room was not very clean and the complimentary coffee was horrible. No manager on staff and the front desk help was overhelmed and rude due to so many people complaining due to no air conditioning. Was told by staff that the place was up for sale and the owners were cheaping it and the a/c had been broke for 6 weeks! I would not recommend!

Best Des Moines downtown hotel

We've always liked staying at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. For the money, it is the best hotel in downtown Des Moines. Located withing walking distance of 3 of the best restaurants in town. It's the only hotel in the downtown area you can stay at for under $100. The hotel was recently bought and will be renovated, so I expect the rates will unfortunately go up. It's a shame because we would stay at a downtown hotel more often if it was less expensive.

Rundown hotel

This is NOT a three-star hotel. While the lobby was historically attractive, the room was a dump. Woodwork was chipped and scuffed, carpet hasn't been replaced in years, room was hot with no way to cool it down, curtains were old and of poor quality, old fashioned drain plug in the tub was pulled out of the drain, one of the lamps would not come on, internet connection was very sporadic and unreliable, grout in the bathroom tile floor has never been cleaned. I do a lot of traveling and will never, ever stay at this hotel again.

Great location in downtown Des Moines. A little dated and on the higher end of the pricing scale, but overall a solid hotel.

Family trip to attend funeral

Several family members , most from out of town, all stayed there for to attend funeral of family member. One relative from St. Paul, Mn., afetr checking in, asked for my room number so she could get together with us for dinner in the hotel restaurant. The clerk said, we cannot give room number, but we will leave a message in Mr. Smith's room. Three hours later, about 10:30 PM, when I cam back to my room, the message light was flashing. I called the front desk. They said you must " call ext 27, or, I don't know what number to call". So, I did not get the message. I had to cover the phone with a towel so that the flashing red light was not visible all night. In the morning, my cousin and I were at the funeral home. She said that they stayed on the same floor of the hotel as me on that night-1-12-14.

comfy stop

had a nice time at the hotel fort des moines ... if you want to get a feel of a hotel from the early 1950's but with a taste of 2000 decor then this is a good place to stay. the rooms are a bit smaller but they do feel quaint .. parked for free next door nice restaarant adjacent to the hotel .. staff was very accomodating

Great location & good value

This was the 2nd time we had stayed at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. It is an older building, but with all the expected amenities and boasts an excellent restaurant. The location is perfect for any downtown event. Our only complaint was that we were not able to regulate the heat in the room.
