old vs historical
Just because a hotel is in an old building doesn't make it a historical experience. The place was gloomy and the staff unfriendly.

Very nice hotel
For a downtown hotel, this is a good deal. That a great restaurant (Django's) is part of the building is an added plus.

Smelly Screaming O
The review in Orbitz was about a nice historic hotel in downtown Des Moines. YES-great location and the wedding we were attending was only a few blocks away. After driving all day we called ahead to see if you could check in earlier than 3 - no problem. Our rooms were ready. The 1st thing all 8 of us noticed when we got off of the elevator was the horrible sour smell. You don't want me to describe it. We hoped it would not follow us to our rooms around the corner. It was rainy and cold and we were tired. Tried to adjust the temperature in the rooms but did not have any luck. We decided to wait until we returned. When returning to our rooms that night we ask about the heat - we were informed there was not heat and we could have a space heater if we wanted one....really? The doors to the rooms/hallway did not seal very tight and the sound in the hallways were not muffled at all, there was an echo from all noise in the hall. At 11:45PM from across the hall we had a rude awakening of a woman screaming like she was dying(she wasn't) - for 30min- until we called security. Completely uncomfortable for me, fiance, mother, sister and children...Must say that security took care of this right away, but then the drunks down the hall came in...they didn't calm down until after 2AM. This is what - after tax I paid $100 a night for and 3 rooms $300! I have to say the staff were very polite, but they did not meet our eye or tell us thank you when we left.

With Old World Charm, Comes Old World Service.
I've stayed in this hotel before and had a terrible experience. I was pleasantly surprised this time around. We were in a very large room and the bathroom was clean. The staff were jovial enough, and the decor is quite charming. Cons 1. Uncomfortable bed & pillows 2. Little climate control in the rooms 3. Outdated televisions 4. Very slow elevator service 5. Terrible coffee so I wasn't going to pay $20 for the breakfast 6. Parking is only free if you arrive after midnight on Friday evening

run down
The hotel was like the rest of the town rundown with so much potential. The hotel was beautiful with and amazing ballroom and reception hall. The problem was the rooms where small and old. The pool was out of order maybe for goood. We made the best of it with our little tv and small comodities, but wouldn't reccommend it for the price.
