Iowa City Football Weekend
I was surprised to find a room so close to campus for a football weekend, so convenience trumped price (which was twice the rate of any other weekend). All in all, the staff was friendly, the gym and indoor pool were nice, the free breakfast had more options than anticipated, the wireless internet worked and the bed was comfortable. The hotel could use a renovation, but everything worked.

Awkward castle-motel
This is a motel in disguise as a medieval castle. The theme wouldn't bother me, but the fact that it is a motel did, because it is advertised as a hotel (there was a door off our room leading straight to the parking lot). Our room was RIGHT off the lobby and LOUD. Most of the noise was the staff chatting with each other - we could hear every word. The room itself was dingy. Not obviously dirty, but not obviously clean either. The toilet is in a very odd location, you have to squeeze between the bed and wall to get to it. There was a whirlpool tub in the room, but it was literally the first thing you see when you walk in the door - combine the old tile (circa 1970s) with the fact that you can hear the conversations of everyone walking by, there is nothing that makes you want to use this amenity. Location and price were about the only positives about this experience.

Old, smelly and run down.
The hotel is old. They use a deodorizer to cover up the moldy smell that gave me an instant headache. TV was new and nice. The bathroom was very small and dingy. The staff was cordial but as soon as I complained of the smell, it got icy. I canceled the room and moved down the street. Maybe I am too picky but I couldn't get past the smell. If you travel a lot you will get "that" feeling as soon as you see the place from the outside. If you have middle to high standards, move on.

Weekend vist for sisters.
Room ok, should keep party people in a section away from us older clients. They allow pets but had to walk a distance to walk your pet. Maybe supply bags for your pet disposal. I would rather have a full breakfast, maybe open the restaurant for breakfast. Staff very pleasant and professional. Not enought bath towels for 2 people.

Fantastic place to chillax
I was pleasantly surprised with the medieval-themed establishment when I first arrived, and my stay over the long Labor Day weekend was superb! The receptionist was very friendly and helpful (although I was disappointed that she's not in costumes). More importantly, the room was spacious and clean. The room perhaps needs a little more lighting, but it's quite fitting the medieval theme. The bathroom is smaller than what I expected, but I absolutely loved the swimming pool and jacuzzi, both viewable from the balcony of my room! It's excellent value for the price!

Dining tip:
Short drive from hotel
Iowa City closeby offers a variety of great food joints, including the well-known Chef's Table, Short's Burger and Shine, Graze, Oasis Felafel joint and Hamburg Inn No. 2, but one must try some fantastic crepes at Crêpe de Luxes on College St near the public library. Try the "Le Cochon" and "Le Rêve"!

Good location to visit our family
It had been too long since we visited my family in Iowa. This Best Western was in a good location to reach all sites of family gatherings during the 3-day stay. Our room happened to be quite dark, being between the corridor and the enclosed pool area. Found the room to have a heavy musty odor, and there were no outside windows to open to air it out. The staff was great and helpful in answering questions. The value was good and appreciate the continental breakfast.

Great place, for the price!
I stayed here to do some research at the University of Iowa, and I have little but positive things to say. The refrigerator in my room helped me economize on my lunch fare. The bed was comfortable. The room was spacious. And the staff was extremely friendly and helpful in all of my queries, from running paths to bus fare. The free portion of the breakfast could have been better -- pastries and muffins were meager and not appetizing. But the hot version had a waffle station. The restaurant was serviceable, had good deals, and had a good beer selection. I would also say that this was one of the quirkiest Best Westerns I've stayed at. The whole thing has a Tudor Renaissance theme, complete with half-timbered exterior, suits of armor in the hallway, and bathroom signs that read "Knights in Need" and "Damsels in Distress." It's fun. The best part: It was only $50 a night. The only thing cheaper would have been a hostel, which I might consider next time.

Short walk from hotel
The city has a very efficient bus system, which you can access through Nextbus or Bongo.com. The stop is a short walk from the hotel and takes you right to the center of Iowa City in 10 minutes. And it's only 75 cents!
