Doing renovations at the moment

My wife and I went on our honeymoon here this past week and it was amazing! They upgraded us to a 2 bed loft overlooking the pool area. The entire grounds were beautiful! The staff was incredibly helpful as well. They are currently doing renovations because of a fire that happened recently, so there were not as many amenities as they would usually have. But it was still breathtaking.

hidden costs, not helpful staff

1) There is an additional hidden cost of a required $12.50 fee per night when you check into the resort. This is in addition to the taxes and fees that this website charges you, so go ahead and add that to what you think you'll be paying. 2) We accidentally booked 1 extra day, and called immediately (over 1 week in advance, within their cancellation period), and they would not refund the money. Additionally, when we tried to check if there was anything they could do when we arrived, the manager we spoke to was quite rude and acted annoyed that we asked, despite the fact that we were staying 6 nights... In sum, resort was fine. Hidden costs and lack of customer service means we certainly will not return and would not recommend this place.

ok for 2 nights

As I understand it they are refurbishing all the rooms. Ours really needed it. It was a studio room which I didnt realize when I looked for a bedroom. The pull out bed was sleepable in but you could feel the springs. Small kitchen, well supplied but out of glasses and plates in the cupboard were out of reach for a short person. Really loved the pool with waterfalls. Had some trouble finding the resort after stopping at 2 places to ask directions. $12.00 resort fee a day was unexpected. Like I said they are redoing a lot of the rooms so will probably be better in the near future.

Get food at the little store in Princeville on the way. They do have microwave, stove and oven and refrigerator.

Deceitful

Was never told of the add on fees until checking and had to sign a waiver that I would pay them. One was for housekeeping and the other was a surcharge. The room had a broken screen door. The only saving grace was a beautiful location and grounds with a nice pool. I would not stay there again!

Very Enjoyable, Beautiful Holiday Rental

I have no complaints about Hanalei Bay Resort - only good things to say. My studio was very comfortable and the view from the balcony of the mountain and lush vegetation made for relaxing breakfasts. The staff were very friendly and helpful as well as responsive to the one minor problem within the room - a refrigerator that was not working, so it was changed. The people at the front desk followed up to make sure the problem was handled. The grounds are lovely as are the pools and the location makes for easy grocery shopping and access to the main road. I highly recommend this Resort.

Loved it!

We enjoyed our stay at this beautiful, low-key resort. We had a rental car, and didn't mind driving eight minutes to Hanalei to have breakfast and dinner - which we would have done anyway, even if there had been a restaurant at the resort. Beautiful location, and the prettiest pool area I've ever seen. The employees were friendly, the rooms clean and large, and the kitchen well equipped. Room service only came once during our one-week stay, but we didn't mind, especially since we got a good deal, It was everything and more we were looking for. Can't wait to go back!

Our First Hawaii Trip

The hotel was pretty empty. I hardly saw people there but It is really big and it has a great view. It is in Princeville, to my opinion the best area in Kauai. I guess their restaurant was burned down back in June and our room was pretty close to it so every time we would leave the room we past by the orange cones and yellow tape....not pretty. Also our room seemed to be in the back so we would have to go by the trash cans and see employees on their break talking to each other. If you decide to stay there make sure you get a room by the pool or anywhere else but the back. The plus was that they have their own beach and its pretty nice and clean. We actually snorkeled there most of the time. It takes a while to get there if you walk but they also have little carts and if you call to have them take you to the beach they get you there pretty fast. Even though it seems like I have more negative things to say I would stay there again. If you go to Hawaii its not to stay in your room...at least not for us. We were out most of the time. We would just go to the room to shower, change and sleep. Our stay there was pretty decent.

Completely Exceeded Expectations

After spending 23 days on four islands in nine different hotels or condos, this resort was probably my favorite. Everyone in my family wished we could have stayed longer. The resort, known locally as Hanalei Bay Resort, is located on what I consider the most desireable part of Kauai, its lush north shore. Its manicured grounds are covered with flowering trees and plants of every kind. Its main pool is a lagoon with several waterfalls flowing into it and the neighboring hot tub. From the resort one has a view of Hanalei Bay and the surrounding mountains. There are multiple tennis courts on site and golf nearby. The beach is accessible from the resort but don't imagine stepping out the back door of your condo onto it. There is a trail down to it and the walk back is decidedly uphill. (Having said that, we never walked down to the beach. There are better ones you can drive to.) Our condo was clean and huge. We were surprised to get two bathrooms. We enjoyed the full kitchen and powerful A/C. The sliding glass doors of our first floor unit opened up to a gorgeous view just above the lagoon and across Hanalei Bay. (We couldn't see the water, just the mountains on the opposite side of the bay.) All in all, I think we got really lucky with the location of our condo unit. We wouldn't have moved if we'd been given the choice. One last thing about the condo: It could be divided into two units—one part with a bedroom and bath only; the other with a kitchen, dining area, bath, and sleeper sofa. We were lucky to have three in our party which insured access to both sides at very little additional cost. One side by itself would have seemed small. Understand as you see my 5-star rating that I am grading on a curve here. I'm comparing this to our other similarly priced accommodations. This may seem to go without saying except that I've read reviews of this place that ding it for not being perfect while completely ignoring the fact that the nightly rate would double if it was. So what isn't perfect? Most complaints seem to center around the fact that the resort's restaurant is shut down and has been for some time. This is a little bit of an inconvenience but not an insurmountable issue. We actually ate frozen pizzas both nights that were purchased from the local grocery store and heated up in our kitchen. Nearby Hanalei has restaurants as well although no fast food per se—-and nothing I would consider inexpensive. Finally, some may not like the fact that the resort feels a little past its prime. The main lagoon pool is gorgeous but, like the restaurant, its in-pool bar is shut down and the bottom of the pool is worn. So, no, the place wasn't built yesterday. The bottom line is if you're on a budget it would be hard to find a better value on this part of the Kauai.

Dining tip: Not Applicable

1. Dining on the north side of the island is limited and expensive. If you're on a budget, stop at Walmart and Safeway in Lihue before driving to Princeville. Bring food and drinks with you. 2. Buy a soft cooler and use it to keep cold drinks with you as you drive around the island. It will not only be super convenient, it will pay for itself, even if you have to throw it away at the airport.

Hotel rooms not recommended

We've stayed at the Hanalei Bay Resort many times. Unfotunately general maintanence has been completely dropped. [...] Armoire doors hanging off broken hinges. Sliding door to lanai missing outside handle, cruddy grout in bathroom, peeling wallpaper. We stayed 5 nights and NEVER had our room cleaned. Not even the trash emptied. Thankfully the restaurant and bar have been bought out and once reopened will enhance the experience greatly. We will stay again, but will be very careful to book directly with the property, and stay away from the hotel rooms and book condo only. VERY disappointed with the condition of the room. BUT, as always, the staff was FABULOUS!

Beautiful ,but dishonest

When we arrived at the hotel they made us sign a release that we would pay an extra $5- a day "energy charge" and separated our reservation into 2 parts so that they could charge us twice for a check in fee($50 for each time). In our case it was an extra $150-that was not part of the package that we had prepaid.[...]But the hotel would not budge on this and would not give us the room key until we signed for this extra charge. We heard from other guests that this was also done to them.It was a beautiful place in a good location ,but this is not right what they are doing. Some of the staff were amazing some unkind.
