Plantation-style goes upscale on Kauai's Royal Coconut Coast
Set on 25 acres along a three-mile beach -- Kauai's longest -- Aqua Kauai Beach Resort evokes the graciousness of the plantation era but with a host of contemporary amenities. The beach, which is perfect for sauntering or sunning, is not for swimming. No problem. Aqua Kauai Beach Resort has four pools, a beachfront sand-bottomed pool and a fantasy pool with a 75-foot lava-tube water slide among them. Two restaurants, a lounge, a fitness center and a spa round out the facilities. And when guests want to explore further afield, Kauai's east coast is an ideal spot from which to do it.
Highlights
  • Fantasy pool with 75-foot lava-tube water slide
  • Series of concerts and programs promoting Hawaiian arts and artists
  • Hawaiian Rainforest Spa
  • Complimentary bocce
  • Complimentary airport shuttle
Location
Kauai's Royal Coconut Coast is rife with sacred sites and groves of slender coconut palms, with its character shaped in part by long, curving Wailua River, the only navigable river in all of Hawaii. A stay here should include visits to a trio of sites, Fern Grotto, Secret Falls, and 80-foot Wailua Falls, made famous in the opening scene of TV classic "Fantasy Island."
Rooms
Accents such as louvered doors and wood floors recall plantation style, but the old plantation homes didn't have what these rooms at Aqua Kauai Beach Resort have: travertine marble in the bathrooms and iPod docks in the living rooms.
Features

There's a distinctly Hawaiian feel to Aqua Kauai Beach Resort with its island architecture, but also a culture of sharing and promoting authentic Hawaiiana that sets it apart. The resort hosts events all year, including local musicians who share their art and stories, benefit concerts supporting the perpetuation of Hawaiian language and music, and a festival featuring the state's top slack-key artists. Check the annual calendar and plan your trip accordingly.

Although the beach out front isn't safe for swimming, Lydgate Beach Park, a couple of miles away from Aqua Kauai Beach Resort, offers excellent swimming and snorkeling.

Nice Hotel, for athe drier seasons

This is a nice hotel, with plenty of swimming and hot tub space. The staff was friendly and helpful. They offer free concierges, though they always seem to be busy. The food is pretty good, but expensive. Parking is pretty expensive. The WiFi isn't free, but the charge for a week isn't so bad. The problem is the location or at least for the season. It rained there not all day, but every day of our stay February 5-11 and it was supposed to continue raining like that for the next week. So when it wasn't raining there, it was cloudy much of the time. Even when it rains, it is a warm rain, but if you're here for sun, you may be disappointed. I'd suggest that during the rainy season you stay somewhere in the desert South or perhaps just choose a little drier island.

Money-saving tip: In Hotel

I'd suggest buying at least a box of cereal and some milk if you want to save little on food. There isn't room to store a jug of milk upright in the mini fridges they provide in the rooms, but it should be fine if you can find something with a tightly fitting lid. You could also keep yogurt and stuff for sandwiches there as well. The local Walmart is a good place to get these sorts of provisions.

Great for family

It is great for family but otherwise, it is mediocre. It is not near any mall or other amenities within walking distance. So if you do not drive, you are basically holed up in the hotel. Although the hotel has scheduled shuttle service to the Kukul Grove Shopping Mall. The hotel room is comfortable but it gets very damp and the pillows have a smell when the weather gets real humid (during rainy season).

Food can get really expensive so try to head to the Kukul Grove Mall to get lunch or dinner. The L&L Hawaiian BBQ Food has pretty decent food for less than $10.00. Try the Pork Lau Lau or Garlic Mahi Mahi. For souvenirs, head to Costco which is a short walking distance from the mall.

Great for couples or families!

The location doesn't get any better than this your 5 minutes from the airport and you feel like your on a secluded resort. It's a perfect location if you plan on visiting both the Napali coast and Barking sands or Waimia canyon. The dual swimming pools with the waterfalls was very enjoyable both to end a romantic night out and for the family. We'll definitely be staying here again.

I would highly recommend an aerial tour by an airplane not a helicopter, you can see more and it's A LOT cheaper. I would also take the cruise to see the Napali coast, we had dolphins swimming with us, they feed you and you bet to go snorkel. The best sunset I've ever seen in the 7 years I've lived in Hawai'i was at a local spot in Princeville.

Great family getaway

Wonderful hotel and great staff. the room cleaning staff even said "HI" every day, that just doesn't happen in life !!! Only complaint we could find was, the outside pool "grill and bar" closed at 5pm nightly, we felt it would have been enjoyable to have a burger and a beer by the poolside one evening...

Pro Bowl weekend

We wanted to stay on Kauai and try and see some sight we didn't get to see the last time we were on the island. Very much surprised by the beautiful resort and the views. When we asked the valet about some local places to eat he gave some really nice places. When we came to again to ask about dessert he told us nothing better than Hula Pie!! The people were very helpful with anything we asked. Price for breakfast in the resort was appropriate. Room was beautiful and very nice. Large closet and a safe. Resort is built where most of the rooms face the pool or the ocean. The one thing that we would have liked to have known ahead of time is that it cost to park every night.

1st time in Kauai

Very nice room, tastefully decorated. Staff is friendly and helpful. Parking fee was not disclosed (though the broker) until arrival. Drinks from the bar taste good but could be stronger for the price. The pools are not heated (though I didn't mind and they're quite nice) and the two hot tubs fill up quick (but they're very nice too). The exercise room is lacking and much of the equipment needs service. However, the setting, views, grounds and many areas to lounge in are beautiful and very comfortable. Overall, we were very pleased with the resort.

Lots of excellent food (and other things) just a short drive up north in Wailua and (especially) Kapaa. Food in Lihue and south towards Waimea is hit or miss. Avoid at all costs MCS grill on the south shore in Hanapepe. We left after waiting an unreasonably long time (~1hr) for food despite the awkward apologies of the waitress every twenty minutes (the food coming out looked unappetizing and overloaded with rice anyways). Hiking is fantastic, especially the Alaki swamp trail (for the experienced) in Waimea Canyon. Snorkeling in front of the Beach House restaurant on the south shore was a great experience too.

The resort was fantastic! Incredible location right on the beach. The facilities were extremely clean and the staff was very friendly, Only one poor experience, and that was trying to reserve a two bed versus a one bed by calling the reservation number. They never returned my four phone calls, left a voicemail, so I had to call the front desk. The computer system was down at the time and they could not confirm that I would get a two bed room. Hoped for the best and everything worked out just fine! The room was amazing!

Beautiful Plantation Style Hotel

Booked a package for an overnight stay. This resort had a high star rating and a low price. I thought it was too good to be true but it was only one night and worth a try. It was a great experience and my only regret is the stay was too short! Enjoyed eating at Shutters and the pool and beach facilities were excellent. Rooms were very comfortable and appeared to be recently remodeled. Very nice plantation style.
