Plantation-style goes upscale on Kauai's Royal Coconut Coast
Set on 25 acres along a three-mile beach -- Kauai's longest -- this resort evokes the graciousness of the plantation era but with a host of contemporary amenities. The beach, which is perfect for sauntering or sunning, is not for swimming. No problem. Kauai Beach Resort has four pools, a beachfront sand-bottomed pool and a fantasy pool with a 75-foot lava-tube water slide among them. Two restaurants, a lounge, a fitness center and a spa round out the facilities. And when guests want to explore further afield, Kauai's east coast is an ideal spot from which to do it.
Highlights
  • Fantasy pool with 75-foot lava-tube water slide
  • Series of concerts and programs promoting Hawaiian arts and artists
  • Hawaiian Rainforest Spa
  • Complimentary bocce
  • Complimentary airport shuttle
Location
Kauai's Royal Coconut Coast is rife with sacred sites and groves of slender coconut palms, with its character shaped in part by long, curving Wailua River, the only navigable river in all of Hawaii. A stay here should include visits to a trio of sites, Fern Grotto, Secret Falls, and 80-foot Wailua Falls, made famous in the opening scene of TV classic "Fantasy Island."
Rooms
Accents such as louvered doors and wood floors recall plantation style, but the old plantation homes didn't have what these rooms at Kauai Beach Resort have: travertine marble in the bathrooms and iPod docks in the living rooms.
Features

There's a distinctly Hawaiian feel to Kauai Beach Resort with its island architecture, but also a culture of sharing and promoting authentic Hawaiiana that sets it apart. The resort hosts events all year, including local musicians who share their art and stories, benefit concerts supporting the perpetuation of Hawaiian language and music, and a festival featuring the state's top slack-key artists. Check the annual calendar and plan your trip accordingly.

Although the beach out front isn't safe for swimming, Lydgate Beach Park, a couple of miles away, offers excellent swimming and snorkeling.

First Visit to Kauai

The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast and dinners were excellent quality, and we ate there everyday for seven days. Only one time were we disappointed with a pasta/penne dish. There were plenty of swimming pool areas with waterfalls. Even a pool with a sandy beach for the children. We will return to that resort/hotel in the future. Good value, priced right. Mrs, D

Make sure you rent a car. If you are going to do a lot of hiking you might want a jeep to get to some of the harder to reach trails.

Delightful Spot for Anniversary Vacation

We were visiting Kauai for the second time, celebrating our anniversary on the same island where we honeymooned but staying at a different hotel. This hotel is an excellent choice for couples, and it may be even better for families. Pros: central location (equidistant from the farthest reaches of the highway); excellent value breakfast buffet; live music in the restaurant every night; no pressure for upgrades or timeshares; moderately priced compared to other Kauai properties (we had lagoon view, which was just fine); friendly staff; hosted local artists and events; pools were open pretty late; super close to airport but with zero plane/helicopter noise; luxurious but laid back Cons: hard to navigate the only entrance/exit during weekday rush hour; the tree-dwelling birds and chickens are *loud* at sunrise (but that may be a problem no matter where you stay - can't remember if it was an issue at our previous hotel in Poipu...); surf at the beach is definitely too rough for swimming - one of us even got a toe injury just while wading in the water

Quick trip

The hotel was nice and clean. The pool was my favorite with a slide and waterfall. They offered a free hula show with complimentary Mai Tais which was very relaxing. The beach is just a short walk away and our mountain side room still had a partial ocean view. Self parking is $12.95 a night and valet is $15.95 a night.

Beautiful and Relaxing

The location was great, just a few minutes from the airport. Check in was quick and courteous. Room was very clean and bed was super comfortable. The grounds were beautiful and well cared for. Food was excellent but a bit overpriced. Enjoyed the Shutters lounge in evening with live entertainment. Loved the whole experience and look forward to going back.

Rent a car. It was easy to get around and the motel is a bit isolated. Check out the Sunday brunch at Gaylord's, It was fantastic! The Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour was worth every penny!

Great Kauai Experience

Quiet, low key (but fun), clean, good for kids, beautiful grounds, pools, nice rooms. Quick drive from there to snorkeling or shopping or other restaurants. Very good stay for the price.

Amazing value if you have car access!

This resort was absolutely gorgeous. The grounds were beautiful; tons of pools, hot tubs and waterfalls. There were little lakes with bridges and fountains, and there was even one pool that was more like a beach, with little pebbles at the bottom. The rooms were large, well-decorated and comfortable. The only problems we had were: 1. How quickly our bill grew 2. The condition of the beach (tons of ocean debris, and creepy white crabs). 3. The lack of variety at the hotel restaurant When we first arrived, we didn't have a car rental, and within two days had spent hundreds of dollars on meals and drinks. My boyfriend and I spent $55 on a couple sandwiches and cocktails for lunch the day we arrived. However, as soon as we rented a car, the resort was perfect. Price Examples: $13/day - Parking $13/day - Internet in room $12/cocktail $25/plate for dinner $15/plate for lunch $15 for the breakfast buffet I found the lunch to be pretty mediocre. It was typical bar food - sandwiches and french fries. The dinners were great, although the salad bar alone was $15, and no small house salads were available. We would have liked the option to split an entree and each order house salads, but that wasn't possible. My boyfriend grew tired of the menu quickly, and we were both a little disappointed at the number of beef-centric meals. For $25-30 a plate, we definitely wanted more options. When we finally did rent a car, we absolutely loved the resort. Kauai'i is so small that although the resort is "far" from everything but the airport, it is actually no more than an hour drive from either end of the one major road. About 5 miles north of the resort were tons of great little shops, restaurants, surfing lessons, etc. Upon renting the car and exploring the island, the resort became a gorgeous haven to return to each afternoon, and we were able to spend the money we would have spent on the hotel amenities doing fun activities in the area. I would definitely recommend paying for the breakfast buffet when you book online. I think we paid $4 each per day to add continental breakfast at booking, instead of the hotel rate of $15.
