Opulent Poipu resort is both playground and blissful retreat
Acres of saltwater lagoons and freshwater pools, grottos, waterfalls, and an extravagance of tropical blooms create a setting so lush it could be a movie backdrop for the ultimate island love story. Tranquil but playful -- who can resist a 150-foot water slide? -- the AAA Four Diamond Grand Hyatt Kauai inspires thoughts of paradise. For spa-lovers it may well be paradise since Anara Spa added its blissful garden sanctuary. Yet golfers, kayakers and tennis players will also find idyllic ways to while away the hours … or days.Highlights
- 45,000-square-foot Anara Spa
- Camp Hyatt (ages 3-12), now partnered with National Geographic Kids
- Adjacent Shipwreck Beach, where "Six Days Seven Nights" was filmed
Rooms
Decor at the Grand Hyatt Kauai is "Classic Hawaiian" with warm hues and rich woods. There are more than 600 rooms, each with lanai or balcony, but the resort doesn't feel crowded thanks to meandering paths and waterways that create a multitude of secluded, peaceful areas.Features
It is hard to peg the resort as ideal for couples or families, lovers or adventurers, golfers or kayakers, because it is for all of the above. Romantics find hidden nooks among the gardens and lagoons and in the serene spa. Tranquil lagoons beckon to kayakers while golfers can take the challenge posed by Poipu Bay Golf Course, where distractions include whales breaching just offshore. Parents have bonding time with children during cultural and family activities, and adult time while kids play and learn in highly regarded Camp Hyatt. A twice-weekly luau and Polynesian revue is for everyone.Dining
There are nearly a dozen restaurants, bars, and snack venues at the Grand Hyatt Kauai, including an espresso bar where caffeine junkies can jump-start the day at 5:30 a.m. Stevenson's Library channels the ambiance of a Victorian gentleman's club (ladies welcome), a cozy spot for late-night Cognac or Port. Reserve in advance to dine at Dondero's, the only AAA Four Diamond restaurant on Kauai.Transportation

The Best Resort I've Stayed In
The lazy rivers, water slide and lagoon was a lot of fun and well decorated with lava rocks and fauna to fit the Kauai theme. The view from our room was awesome. Beach of beautiful, especally at sunset. I loved the 2 mile hike alond the rock cliffs next door. Restaurants were all top notch, especially Tidepools, where the seafood is great and you are surrounded on all sides by pools of coi fish, My only complaint is that the ocean at that location is too rough for most people to swim. It is a very popular beach among surfers. If you want to swim with your kids and go snorkel, go down the road to Poipu park.

Expected more from the Hyatt
Compared to stays at other Hyatt resort locations, the stay was mediocre. The service in their "5 star" restaurant left something to be desired. . .they booked reservations for us, and when calling the restaurant back we received a message they were closed. Hyatt would not honor Passport / discounts b/c it was booked through a "3rd party", however, when booked through other 3rd parties (sites, travel agencies, etc.) staying at other Hyatt locations this was not an issue. . . Despite how the site advertised, it was a fend for yourself for getting to/from the airport, to excursions, etc...forcing a car rental that hadn't been planned based on prior experience. The staff itself was friendly and courteous. . .

Beautiful Grounds but...
The grounds are beautiful and so are the pool areas. The rooms are very ordinary...nothing you wouldn't find at any other chain hotel. One night we visited the Stevenson Library for desert; we sat at a table for more than ten minutes with waitresses walking by us. Needless to say we walked out. We wouldn't stay at this hotel again...disappointed.

Kauai Hyatt
Be sure to rent a car at the airport (hotel selection is limited and pricier), and make the trip to the north side of the island. The beaches were fantastic and the entire area is a lot of fun. Many more opportunities for shopping and dining. The food is hit or miss: either perfect or awful - no in between. I called the hotel several times to ensure our room preference and of course when we arrived it was completely wrong. Our room had one tiny table and no desk. What really go to me was the packet coffee machine that dispensed into a paper cup. Paper cups in a 5 star hotel? The grounds are breathtaking, just gorgeous. The pools, both fresh and saltwater are a lot of fun.

The spa is horrifically over priced and severely over rated. If you should decide to waste your time & treasure be sure to book your appt. at least a week in advance and then plan on not receiving the service you want.

Not as good as it should be
The resort itself is very nice although it is very large and the winding paths make it tedious to get from one place to another. Their pools and lagoon are very unique and create a good ambiance. This is good since their beach is something left wanting. Its not a private beach and their are a lot of rocks that make it a dangerous place for kids. The rooms were very disappointing considering the cost. There is no bath tub and no microwave. The room itself was so average that you feel cheated by the price paid. Nevermind the resort amenities. The price you pay for the room booked is not what you can expect to pay. The charge you at checkout for an assortment of rediculous fees added onto your bill for everything. They don't say hi to you without charging you for it. Also, they add their own gratuity onto everything as if you are going to stiff them. Reguardless of whether it was earned or not. I don't recommend this resort at all!!

Over rated vacation resort
Will never return here. Decided to stay at the Grand Hyatt since everyone said it is the best resort on Kauai. Found it to be over priced and over rated. At check in was given a room at the edge of the property. Took 10 minutes to wak from the room to the lobby. The room was clean but dated, and every night we had mosquitos in the room despite never opening the sliding door. No shampoo in the toiletries. The ice machine was a hike from the room. Had a $25 per day resort fee but had to pay extra for sunscreen, rafts and inner tubes. The three jacuzzis in the resort were on the opposite side of the property, and when we tried to use the spa pool and jacuzzi on our side of the property was told it would be an additional $30 per day. Arrived the first night at 6 pm after a long trip. Tried to get dinner on site but no openings. Was told I should have reserved a table that morning if I expected to eat at their restaurant. Drinks were pricey and watered down. Restaurants were over priced and the food just ok, except for the Asian eatery at the golf course which was excellent but expensive. Staff and service were mediocre at best. The grounds are beautiful though, and filled with families and children so don't expect much relaxation. I have no idea why this resort is rated anything more than a 3. Beware.

Not the 5-star experience I expected
The hotel is beautiful. It was always clean and orderly. However, part of what makes a hotel a 5-star hotel is the people. The service was really nothing I would brag about. When I arrived, registration thought their conversation was more important than checking me in and that mentality seemed the flourish throughout the property. In addition the price for food was very high: room service, food by pool, restaurants within the hotel, etc. in comparison to the area. I have been to Kauai before and had a much better time in Princeville.

25th Anniversary Honeymoon
The Grand Hyatt Kauai is a beautiful property. The restaurants are as good as any resort we have stayed. The employees were friendly and professional during our 11 night stay. The room was large. We had two problems during our stay. I called the Grand Hyatt and asked the follwing question: How large was the refrigerator - I was tolf large enough to put in water, beer and small amounts of food. We arrived prior to check-in and was given a electonic wand that would light up when ready. We weren't put into the room until 4pm. Also, the refrigerator was a beverage only and it was fault. They did replace it promptly. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and the property. It was my wife's 50th birthday and our 25th wedding anniversary and we tried not to let the above impact our trip.

Grand Hyatt review
Excellent hotel with extremely friendly staff. Enjoyed the wonderful pools and service. Very relaxing environment. Have had better rooms before and expected more bang for the buck; however, it would not deter me from returning. A lot of children and a little noisy at times from public people going to the adjoining beach.
