Opulent Poipu resort is both playground and blissful retreat
Acres of saltwater lagoons and freshwater pools, grottos, waterfalls, and an extravagance of tropical blooms create a setting so lush it could be a movie backdrop for the ultimate island love story. Tranquil but playful -- who can resist a 150-foot water slide? -- the AAA Four Diamond Grand Hyatt Kauai inspires thoughts of paradise. For spa-lovers it may well be paradise since Anara Spa added its blissful garden sanctuary. Yet golfers, kayakers and tennis players will also find idyllic ways to while away the hours … or days.
Highlights
  • 45,000-square-foot Anara Spa
  • Camp Hyatt (ages 3-12), now partnered with National Geographic Kids
  • Adjacent Shipwreck Beach, where "Six Days Seven Nights" was filmed
Rooms
Decor at the Grand Hyatt Kauai is "Classic Hawaiian" with warm hues and rich woods. There are more than 600 rooms, each with lanai or balcony, but the resort doesn't feel crowded thanks to meandering paths and waterways that create a multitude of secluded, peaceful areas.
Features
It is hard to peg the resort as ideal for couples or families, lovers or adventurers, golfers or kayakers, because it is for all of the above. Romantics find hidden nooks among the gardens and lagoons and in the serene spa. Tranquil lagoons beckon to kayakers while golfers can take the challenge posed by Poipu Bay Golf Course, where distractions include whales breaching just offshore. Parents have bonding time with children during cultural and family activities, and adult time while kids play and learn in highly regarded Camp Hyatt. A twice-weekly luau and Polynesian revue is for everyone.
Dining
There are nearly a dozen restaurants, bars, and snack venues at the Grand Hyatt Kauai, including an espresso bar where caffeine junkies can jump-start the day at 5:30 a.m. Stevenson's Library channels the ambiance of a Victorian gentleman's club (ladies welcome), a cozy spot for late-night Cognac or Port. Reserve in advance to dine at Dondero's, the only AAA Four Diamond restaurant on Kauai.

Beautiful hotel, amazing time

We stayed here in December 2011 and had an absolutely amazing time. We had all ages from grandparents to kids (ages 1,6,8) and everybody had a blast. The staff was wonderful and took care of all the details including setting up a crib for our little one. Our boys (6 & 8) had a blast every day sliding down the waterslide into the pool, or exploring the lagoon or just running around the many grassy areas around the resort. The adults enjoyed the excellent fitness center (truly a wonderful gym) and the spa as well as the many quiet places to rest and enjoy some time in the wonderful location. I think we tried pretty much every single restaurant on the property and loved them all (although the Italian Restaurant was a bit pricy in our opinion). Highly recommend this hotel for people of all ages!

The beach is not really a swimming beach, more of a surfers beach with heavy surf. A short drive away are many more kid-friendly beaches.

Honeymoon

This hotel is very nice, but the rooms are a little old. We actually changed rooms because the first room had a little bit of a moldy smell. The hotel was very apologetic and moved our room quickly to satisfy us. All in all, it is a great hotel. If you want top of the top, Princeville on the island has the best reputation.

About 10% of the people, including me, on the Na Pali coast dinner cruise got sea sick. Either take something beforehand or just go along with it...It was pretty stunning.

Great 50th Anniversity getaway

Staff was outstanding!!! Food in general was excellent. There should have been more variety between the casual restaurants and even during any week period. Food at luau could have been better. Grounds were superb. However for anyone with a mobility problem getting around can be a problem, especially in and out of center of shipwreck wing(above Dondero's restaurant). This restaurant is great for a special occasion and even modified my wifes dinner order to her liking and gave us a special 50th dessert.

Na Pali boat trips book up fast. Plan ahead. Travel around island is slow especially thru Lihue due to ongoing road work and speed limit in many areas is low. Don't expect to see many route number signs so be ready to look for local street names.

The "resort and spa" is a total resort and spa, never having to leave for anything including food. Food outstanding, service outstanding. I slept better there than I do at home, it was an amazing hotel that I will try to visit every couple years.

Amazing place for anyone

This hotel had great views and pools. The resort was amazing and the staff was very friendly. We had an ocean view room that was out of this world. Prior to staying here we spent one night at the Marriot and paid for ocean view whcih we didn't get. That is how we ended up at this great hotel.

Nicest Hotel in Hawaii!!

I cannot say enough good things about this hotel and the staff there. EVERYONE, from the front-desk to the waterslide attendant, is ultra-friendly, and really interested in helping you get the most from your vacation. They point out whales, bring around icees at the pool, and genuinely want to see you happy. This was my 11th trip to Hawaii and this is the nicest hotel that I have stayed at, even compared to other "5 star" hotels and brands. We went deep-sea fishing (set up at the hotel), and brought back 6 lbs of ono and mahi-mahi, which the staff at Tidepools prepared into a custom feast for two separate meals. The chef came out and greeted us personally and asked us questions about what we liked in order to match our taste palates. I have an allergy to down, and stopped at the front desk to ask about extra allergy free pillows; we chuckled when she said "consider it done", but the pillows were in our room before we walked back from the lobby. The pools and salt-water lagoon are 24/7, and the staff patrol the area, so the grounds are completely safe and you don't have to worry about randoms wandering onto the resort. The salt-water lagoon is also temperature controlled, so it stays cool during the heat of the day, and stays warm at night! The hot-tubs are actually HOT and are checked multiple times/day for cleanliness (i personally observed this on several days). Although there were several families and children are welcome (there is a camp hyatt to entertain kids during the day, so that adults can relax), there is also an adults-only pool area, where you can avoid children if you want. Your resort fee includes an hour of tennis court time PER DAY, and the resort is directly adjacent to a beautiful golf course. The work-out facility is TOP-NOTCH, and the spa is beautiful with every possible amenity you would expect from a 5-star spa (ordering food from within the spa, unlimited coffee, multiple attendants in the male- or female-only side, etc.). The non-perfects: The location is awesome, island-wise (5 min from mediocre snorkeling at Brennecke's beach, and the great seafood place there, 5 min from town and the fish market, 10 min from a mall and longs drugs, 25 min from airport and fishing harbor). However, the waves are a bit rough on all of Kauai during winter/spring, so the ocean is good for surfing, but not really for snorkeling or swimming. The Hyatt can't control that, but you will have to drive to enjoy the ocean during winter. The beach fronting the resort is beautiful, and has several tidepools with fish, shellfish, and eels (we saw one get stuck in a tidepool on our first day). The value is very good, considering how perfect the resort is, but it is Hawaii, and especially Kauai, so everything is expensive. Overall, this place is a premier resort and deserves it's 5-star rating.

Tidepools and Stevenson's at the Hotel are DELICIOUS (Donderos, the Italian place, is good, but pricey for Italian outside of NY or Chi). However, Brennecke's Beach broiler is a great change-up to get out of the Hotel for a bit, and IMHO, has great food (especially fish), and impeccable service for a low price.

wonderful resort! Salt water lagoon makes up for unswimmable beach. Upgrade to pool view well worth the slightly higher cost. Drinks are outrageous, so bring your own liquor. Anara spa is the best I have ever experienced. All in all, wonderful resort.

Little piece of paradise!

Absolutely incredible hotel! It exceeded my expectations! The room looked like it was brand new and was spacious and clean. The outdoor pool and lagoon area was incredible! For such a large hotel, the outdoor pool area provided tons of options to explore and sit out in the sun. The view from the beach right infront of the hotel was incredible. The cliff to the east of the beach provided a great view of the sunset (only a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel) and we even saw whales out in the ocean (whale season is in the winter months). Absolutely wonderful experience and would highly recommend the Grand Hyatt to all!!

Beautiful Property, Onsite Restaurants Expensive

The property is amazing. The only downside is that the drink prices are just far too high compared to the rest of the island. Food and such is much more comparably priced.
