Great place to getaway

We loved the unit we stayed in and with the beach right there we were able to snorkel almost every day. The sea turtles were there every day too! It is close enough to walk to many things or drive down the road to other beaches or Lahaina. If you want to stay somewhere where it is quiet and way less people yet close enough to Lahaina this is the place. It's less than a 10 minute drive. I gave it 4 stars only because the parking situation is aweful. We were lucky to find a parking spot in the evening and if we didn't we had to leave our rental car way down the street. The parking lot is also very tight to try to get in and out of. Other than that, we had an awesome time there! We recommend staying here and definitely plan to come back here if we visit Maui again.

Best value in west Maui

Kahana Beach is right on the beach and located 10 minutes of Kanapoli resort area. It is much quieter than Kanapoli. It is also a very good spot to see sea turtles and snorkling right outside of the hotel. The staff are very friendly. The room is very clean (I believe it is just remodeled). Best of all, it is much cheaper than those big name hotels.

A tad above average

We stayed one week in April 2012, here are my opinions: Parking: Inadequate. I was not sure if all rooms were occupied but after 9pm we had to park on the public parking strip in between the Kahanas, even on the non-marking spots. I think a car is a must here, so beware if you travel in the high season. Is there a high season? Staff: Minimal but friendly. After hours everything is redirected to the sister/mother hotel next door, that includes re-keying your room should it stop working. You may want to know where it is during the day. Room: Roomy, clean, but old. We stayed at the -01 so not much to write about the ocean view, but we could keep an eye on the rental 7/24. The slider was not shut tight so we heard the wind howling all nights and days. Is it always 20mph, 30mph wind there? Beds: Murphy ok, Sofa springy. We liked it firm so the Murphy was good for us, throw the kids on the pull-out, they don't know any difference. Kitchen: Decently equipped. It served well for quick snacks, left-over, take-outs, etc. Internet: Provided by Time Warner at the cost of $40+/week or $10/day. They provided wired cable so your tablets, phones are out of luck. Of course, you can run to Office Depot for a wireless router but that will be more cost and inconvenience. The Ethernet wire is long but there is no power outlet near the dining table where you most likely set up your laptop. If your battery does not hold a lot of juice, bring a power extension cord. TV/DVD: Good TV line up but no HD content, DVD connection using AV only (but the TV is too small to discern.) Bathroom: Adequate. I like the fact that they put a lot of hangers in the closet unlike most places. Pool, hot tub: Small pool but with a deep end. Did not see many in the pool, ok to play with the kids. Hot tub is of residental size, would be a nice place to see the sunset. Beach: Small. It disappeared in high tide but we stayed during the half moon week so it was sufficient, barely. Even then, at higher tides, strong waves would wet the entire beach, nowhere to hide! The water goes deep quickly so keep your little ones close. If you are a snorkeler, venture out about 50' in about 15' of water where the corals are, there are a lot of stuff to see. I was even surprised by a sea turtle swimming about 4 feet under me at one time. Don't need to pay for a tour. On the other note, there are lots of nice public beaches, some with shower. Town: Lahaina is about 6 miles South with everything you would need (including the above mentioned Office Depot.) Front street is the place to walk. Special note: Not recommend the drive to/from Kahului using the scenic 340 for the faint-hearted. Overall, for the price I would recommend this place but you must have a car.

good location, could work on service

The location of the hotel was great - right on the beach, allowing us to listen to the waves at night. It was close to Lahaina, as well as Kahikili Beach and Black Rock, which have good snorkeling. This was my 4th trip to Hawaii, and though service was adequate, I didn't get the same embracing aloha spirit from the hotel staff here. I also specifically requested to be placed in a room with a direct ocean view months prior to my trip, but was disappointed to be placed in one of the side rooms on arrival. I requested a room change and was supposedly placed on a waiting list, but despite inquiring about the room change on each of the first few days of my trip, I never got moved and ended up with the side room during the entire duration of my 1-week stay. Overall however, I think the room was a good deal. There was a small kitchenette with ample supplies, which we didn't use much. There was a small pool and hot tub, which we also didn't use. The parking lot was tight but free. Internet comes at a fee and only works with a cable plug-in (no wireless). The fold-out bed was functional, but far from amazing. Room service was minimal (towel change just once during our week stay). Minimal on complimentary services. The good: location and free parking. The bad: lacking in aloha spirit.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

We found Black Rock snorkeling to be a bit overrated. In contrast, we thought the reef off Kahikili Beach (just in front of the Westin) was much better in many ways: easier parking, wider reef with greater variety of sea-life, fewer people, and access to foot rinse off the beachfront boardwalk.

Stay away!

We were placed in a room on the first floor, right next to the conciere's desk. From our room you could hear every conversation, starting at 7:00 AM until 7 PM daily. Couldn't use the lanai due to a sales presentation going on just outside the lanai. Also saw the biggest cockroach i have ever seen. Could not get a different room and was not offered refund.

There is a Saveway grocery store nearby. However, if you want organics then check out a whole food store in Kahalui and Mana Food (very popular) in Paia.
