We had a great time there!

The staff is very kind and the clear highlight is the pool area. We have three kids (2-12) and they just loved the pool as well as the beach. The resort is well maintained and there is nothing to complain.

Great property but a little expensive

Loved everything! The 2 bedroom suite was great, everything we needed for our family of five. Loved the pools but the beach in front can be rough and has coral.

Great for families

Great room, lots of things to do on the property, lots of other families there too. Beach was a bit steep and with stronger waves, but a short walk got us to a nicer area. If you are ambitious you could walk all the way south to Black Rock for snorkeling. We drove instead.

One week family stay

Loved Honua Kai. We usually stay at the Sheraton kaanapali but decided to stay at a condo this time to take advantage of the separate sleeping quarters and the washer dryer. Now that we have experienced maui this way, we will never go back to staying at a regular hotel. The pools are great and the slide is really fun! It was nice to have dukes and the cafe downstairs but I'm not really impressed with the food at either. But they're good when you're in a pinch. And drinks during aloha hour (4-6) are cheap! It's close to good eats, including Ono tacos. And of course you can drive just 10 minutes south to lahaina. The beach in front is not really swimable but you can drive down to kaanapali in a couple of minutes or down further to the many beaches the line the west side of maui. Honua Kai provides my favorite toiletries...aveda!! Everything is pristine and luxurious. We were originally taken to room HH326. It has a view of the overhang of the valet roundabout. We called to request a room change. So they changed our room to a higher level the next day, which I thought was nice of them. They supply most of your necessities, but you need to bring your own foil, Saran Wrap, plastic bags and Tupperware if you need them.

Relaxing friends reunion

Nicer finishes & larger floor plans than the Westin villas next door. Extremely clean. Booked a 2BR Resort View and was upgraded to a 2BR Ocean View!

Amazing!!!!!!

We've stayed multiple places in Maui, but Honua Kai has them all beat!! Staff was welcoming, you can't beat the location, multiple pools to choose from, and if it were to rain who cares because the condo was incredible! The pictures on their website are a true presentation of the resort. We can't wait to go back!

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Take the mile walk on the Boardwalk to Whalers village, but take a bag with your towel so you can relax on the beach on your way back.

Great hotel for families

This hotel is fantastic for families. The rooms are apartment style with a full kitchen. Lots of room to chill. My wife and I cooked a bit after needing a break from eating out constantly. That said, there is nice restaurant on location for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and beer o'clock. The hotel also has a spa, fitness room, coffee shop, and 3 pools (i think). Not sure what else you would want. I would recommend staying at this hotel only if you have a family. I didn't see many younger couples there without kids. The only other con is that the beach isn't great. It's not what you would expect for Hawaii anyways. In conclusion, great hotel and great staff, but not what I wanted for a honeymoon.

Average

Apparently it makes a difference how you book this resort. The unit we received had many issues...too many for the rate we paid for an oceanview 2 bedroom, 2 bath. Problems with the air conditioning, oven, dryer and freezer. Oceanview meant a sliver of ocean if you positioned yourself in one corner of the balcony. We were very disappointed.
