KONA'S BEST LOCATION - With a dramatic oceanfront setting overlooking picturesque Kailua Bay, the Royal Kona Resort offers great value and is conveniently located within walking distance to the village of Kailua-Kona with its many fine restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities.

Ideally situated on 12 acres of tropical gardens on a lava promontory, the Royal Kona Resort is surrounded on three sides by the crystal clear waters of the blue Pacific. The resort is comprised of three guestroom towers, and all guestrooms in the Alii and Lagoon Towers were completely remodeled in 2006, offering guests a fresh, new, contemporary decor. The resort's Bay Tower offers travelers a choice of comfortable, value-priced guestrooms which were refurbished in 2001. Each of the resort's spacious guestrooms feature large outdoor lanai's on which guests can enjoy the tranquility, and take pleasure in beautiful mountain vistas or gaze out across the magnificent Pacific Ocean.

A relaxing open-air lobby and surrounding tropical salt-water fishpond lead out to an expansive oceanfront sundeck and split-level freshwater swimming pool which is impressively perched on a lava flow directly above the ocean. The resort also features a private sandy beach cove and sheltered salt-water swimming lagoon which is perfect for snorkeling.

Other resort amenities include four Tennis Courts available for day or evening play, rejuvenating massage and spa treatments at the resort's Lotus Center, complete hair, nail and skin care salon services, and great on-property shopping. Island specialists are available at the resort's Activity Desk to assist guests in booking tours and to recommend other island attractions, and specialists are also available on-property to assist couples with destination weddings and vow renewal ceremonies.

Kona's very best dining experience is showcased in a truly world-class ocean-side setting at the Royal Kona Resort's award-winning Don The Beachcomber restaurant. And guests will find live entertainment, light meals and a variety of tropical beverages, including the Original Mai Tai, at Don's Mai Tai Bar. With its open-air setting, right on the water's edge, Don's is the perfect spot to enjoy the sights and sounds of all of the activity taking place on Kailua Bay, and a great place to catch a breathtaking Kona sunset. Several nights a week, the resort also presents Kona's only oceanfront Luau, the "Lava Legends and Legacies Polynesian Luau", amidst a lovely oceanfront Coconut Grove.

For a great location in the heart of Kailua-Kona, gracious Hawaiian hospitality and service, and the Big Islands best value, the Royal Kona Resort is an excellent choice.

Great location!!!

Stayed at Royal Kona for 2 nights paid approx $100 a night (Nov 19-20). Room was small compared to other places I've stayed ... but it had a balcony and ocean view. Room consisted of a king size bed, safe, and refrigerator. Unfortunately there is no free breakfast, however there is a breakfast buffet, and menu dining offered. Buffet cost about $13 per person, make sure you get the 20% coupon at the front desk. Excellent location, walking distance from shopping and dining. About a 2hour drive to the Volcano Park. Very close to beaches. If you want to swim with sea turtles go to Kahalu'u Beach those little guys are everywhere!!

It was a good location for discovering all the island had to offer. We used it as a base for scuba diving the second week. ... If breakfast could have been open by 6 instead of 6:30 it would have been easier to eat, rest and get to dive boat by 7:30 but we managed ok. Many times we go to various islands for scuba diving and get all inclusive including the diving on sight but this was a slightly different vacation because we wanted to travel and see the sights before diving.

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Walk

Get to know the "family" at Bongo Bens.....great reasonable dining for fresh fish caught and prepared same day...both the fish taco(in a wrap)and the grilled tuna melt are "euphoric"...don't miss the trip on their boat Sea Wolf to see the Manta Rays at night with brothers Bart and Brady...very cool people and very cool experience!

Time savers tip

Do not travel to the airport over two hours in advance of your flight. You will have to wait until the ticket counter opens and there is NOTHING to do there (no food, shops, etc) until you check in and pass thru security...

Turning 50 "Island Style"

Susan and Craig Nov 2, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Having stayed at the more costly "high end" resorts for hundreds more dollars per night, the Royal Kona is without a doubt, ... the best value, the most traditional, the best location with respect to the ocean and town, the best ambiance and the most realistic Hawaiian "experience" than any other establishment on the Kona coast. The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to insure we had a very enjoyable and memorable time at their facility. We will definitely stay there again!

The second part of our 2-island honeymoon was here and it was still nice, but somewhat of a letdown since the early 70s when ... I was there before as a youngster. Not as many flowers decorating the side of the buildings as I remembered. Our tower was refurbished 3 years ago, but had spots in the ceilings. But the location is very nice and the staff did help us a lot. The airline delayed the start of our trip, which was to another island, but this hotel helped us when we needed to cancel the initial reservation, and at no cost. Later, it worked out for us to rebook the stay at the royal kona resort, for the same number of nights. We arrived and found the front desk people putting us in an upgrade room, since they knew about the honeymoon, and our initial troubles w/ the airlines. We got a corner room and they even put a bottle of wine in the small fridge for us at no charge. During the stay, the front desk people were sooo helpful and friendly. As a result, our stay on the big island was better than expected. They supplied us with a map of the best beaches on the island and other sites to see.

Time savers tip

Get a good map of the island and its attractions. There are more sites to see than you would think. Plan ahead carefully, especially when visiting the lava flows.....gate opens at 5:00pm, gets dark about 1 hour later, best time to see the glow from the lava, especially as it flows into the ocean. You will need a flashlight, good footwear and water, for this short walk and the wait until darkness. The east side of the island is cloudy and quite often a light rain is associated w/ it. The west is dry. We enjoyed hitting the public beaches for a few hours in the morning then driving to other parts of the island later.

Not what you Expect :(

luke and shannon Newlyweds Oct 25, 2009

They spent more money on the bar; Dons Beachcomber than all of their rooms. The pillows were like bags of sand. The bed was ... hard and uncomfortable. When we were laying in bed we had no choice but to listen to the elevator go up and down all night. Plus, the toliet in the room ran all night. Even with the bathroom door shut you could still hear it. The location and the bar are great but hardly make up for everything else. Don't be fooled by their beautiful lobby; you'll understand as soon as you see your room why you got such a great deal.

Nice rooms and beautiful view

Rachel C Oct 22, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

We were pleasantly surprised at this hotel and were upgraded to an ocean view room without a request to do so. Our room was ... clean and spacious and the balcony area was very large. There was a luau one of the evenings and we could view the whole thing from our room if we had wanted to. There are many shops and restaurants within walking distance and most of them have live entertainment, and they all sounded pretty good. The two downfalls of the hotel are that the main restaurant was not open for dinner on Monday or Tuesday night (there was still a grill to get food when you wanted) and there is no direct beach access. The hotel has created a small lagoon, which is great with a pair of goggles to check out the fish, but if you're looking for waves, you'll need to drive about 20 miles up the coast. If I were to return to Kona I would certainly stay at this hotel again. Out of the five hotels we stayed at during our trip to Hawaii it was the best.

Entertainment tip, Short Walk

I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but it was the closest to the hotel and on the same side of the street. They had the best live entertainment that we saw throughout our entire 10 day trip. It was just one guy with a guitar and once in a while someone would get up and hula. It wasn't loud and wasn't completely Hawaiian the whole time. He did a lot of cover songs and sounded quite a bit like James Taylor.

Beauty on the outside

Big Island Virgin Oct 20, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Location is outstanding on Alli Drive, close to downtown activities, can walk to many of the stores, restaurants and island ... adventures. The on site bar and restaurant has beautiful views and comfortable seating. With multiple photo opportunities. Our room, # 303, was the most Westernly facing room and had direct afternoon sun and a very weak AC that never maintained a cool room. I would avoiding the very end rooms due to the temps and it's best to ask for Ocean & Pool view, as the non pool side overlooks roofs. For fun, we really enjoyed the Fairwinds snorkle trip on the Hula Kai. The horses to the north were worth the 1.5 hour drive on the beautiful country road. Dining at Huggos & Huggos on the Rocks was a great experience during sunset. Breakfast at the Fish Hopper has a beautiful view and I would recommend the Greek Omelett.

Take the Polynesian Adventure Island tour with Greyline! Our driver was a fountain of knowledge about Hawaii and Kona in particular - he was truly safety conscious and professional. He had a sense of humour which makes the day-long trip a pleasure. He also provided us with tidbits of local gossip which everyone enjoyed! Highly recommend this trip if you want to get an overview of all the exciting things to see and do on Hawaii. There's Kona coffee, chocolate, the volcano, cookies and orchids too!!!

The only reason I said "noisy" is because when we checked in, there was a huge luao (sp) going on. It was really a great ... overall experience. Excellent oceanside bar. Very clean and nice rooms. Good HD widescreens for the little TV that you watch. The coffee is not that good compared to other hotel coffees. I highly recommend this hotel--especially if you're on a budget.

Money savers tip, Short Drive

If you have a day trip available. Drive to Volcano National Park instead of the flyover business. Only 5 bucks for everyone in the car to get in and it is SURREAL! Stop at the coffee shack about 30 minutes from Kona. Its on the right side of the road. It has the best view/ dining experience on HWY 11.

We had an ocean-front room, the view was outstanding. Walking distance to town, very easy to walk about town. Great bar! Good ... resturant, but pricey. We got a complimentary bottle of champagne for our anniversary! Special because we'ed never had ocean-front before.

Hotel is ok, a bit old, but nicely kept. Best thing was the ability to check out & come back later before our night time ... flight to clean up,

Dining tip, Short Walk

Food is expensive in hawaii so if you buy snacks and tuna lunches, eat hearty breakfast and then have a nice dinner. Saves a little money. Having a car was a necessity.

Dining tip, Short Walk

go across the street to eat. a nice selection and variety.

Nightlife tip, Short Walk

Coconutz is a great little bar that had amazing live music the night we were there. The bartenders are friendly.

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Walk

Take the Polynesian Adventure Island tour with Greyline! Our driver was a fountain of knowledge about Hawaii and Kona in particular - he was truly safety conscious and professional. He had a sense of humour which makes the day-long trip a pleasure. He also provided us with tidbits of local gossip which everyone enjoyed! Highly recommend this trip if you want to get an overview of all the exciting things to see and do on Hawaii. There's Kona coffee, chocolate, the volcano, cookies and orchids too!!!

Recreation/Attractions tip, Short Drive

Only a short drive to the harbor where great fishing, diving and snorkeling activities can be chartered. The fish market there at the marina serves delicious seafood dishes, at very good prices!

--Bubblehead, SE Wisconsin Sep 23, 2009

Shopping tip, Short Walk

I enjoy bargains and local produce. The open market is just steps away from the hotel. It's great to pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables. The market has a variety of bread also and tons of souveneirs. More shops are minutes away on Alii Drive.

--Happy Camper, Honolulu, Hawaii Sep 10, 2009

Dining tip, Short Walk

It is close to many restaurants. But there are few shopping malls in the arean within 10 minute drive and provide higher class dining experience.

Go horseback riding in Kamuela (Waimea) side of the island. Had a GREAT time and the "Da Hana Ranch" was wonderful.

Both Bongo Bens and U Top It are close and affordable for meals. Both had good selection and good quality.

--Texan-on-the-Bayou, Marrero, LA Jul 22, 2009

Dining tip, Short Walk

LA CALA Mexican food (better than any in Eugene, OR). We ate here many times and tried several different items. They were all good and they had very friendly staff. Also, Lava Java has great breakfast (if you sit outside do not leave your food unattended as the birds will swoop in and nibble at it). Stay away from the hotel buffet it was bad.
