Needs to remodel

Had a 13 inch analog tv and the remote did not work. Doors were slamming too noisy. This was an upgrade? Will probably stay at the King K hotel next time.

senior citizen home

If you are a senior citizen, looking for a place to sleep, this is ideal -- however, if you want to have something to do, I would opt to go elsewhere more scenic. There's no hot tub or fitness center. The location is near the shops and restaurants, but is a bore for anyone under the age of 65 years old. The rooms were really small and run down. The sheets felt dirty and the bathroom did not even come with conditioner.

Ironman Triathlon week vacation

I stayed at the Royal Kona while watching friends compete in Ironman. The hotel looks like it hasn't been updated in 30 years, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's still very clean and nice. The sundry shop closed at 5:00 and the hotel bar closed at 10:00 which was a little inconvenient, but there are shops and bars right across the street.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

There is a small snorkeling lagoon on the property where you will definitely see some fish, but you'll want to go a few miles south to Kahaluu Beach to see lots of sea turtles.

Nice location

This hotel is a great location to all of downtown Kona. The hotel itself is pretty standard. It's clean but not spotless. Pricing is pretty good. When we arrived they did not have our reservation [...]. They tried to send us away but I wouldn't let them. Kept saying they were booked but in the end got us a room. I would stay ther again.

Great location

Royal Kona is a great location to the shops and restaurants in Kailua-Kona. Easy walking distance. Huggos is almost next door. :) The hotel itself is average and even though we stayed in a 'refurbished' room it still fairly dated. It was clean, the bed was comfy and whenever we did call for housekeeping or maintenance they were there right away. Staff was friendly and helpful. For the price and location it is a good choice. We did not eat at Don the Beachcomer as it was a bit high for our budget, but everyone that did said the food was excellent.

Beauty on the outside

Location is outstanding on Alli Drive, close to downtown activities, can walk to many of the stores, restaurants and island adventures. The on site bar and restaurant has beautiful views and comfortable seating. With multiple photo opportunities. Our room, # 303, was the most Westernly facing room and had direct afternoon sun and a very weak AC that never maintained a cool room. I would avoiding the very end rooms due to the temps and it's best to ask for Ocean & Pool view, as the non pool side overlooks roofs. For fun, we really enjoyed the Fairwinds snorkle trip on the Hula Kai. The horses to the north were worth the 1.5 hour drive on the beautiful country road. Dining at Huggos & Huggos on the Rocks was a great experience during sunset. Breakfast at the Fish Hopper has a beautiful view and I would recommend the Greek Omelett.

A great, relaxing stay...

This was a great trip for two single girls. Royal Kona Resort was great and accomodating. The pool was small and didn't have a whirlpool spa, but if you went during the later part of the day there were not too many people. The staff was very friendly. The on-site restaurant was too expensive, but the location was great and were able to walk up and down the street and had many places to dine. The trolley was great to get to beach accesses and more shopping. The views were awesome. The Lotus Spa was awesome...try the Lomi Lomi Hawaiian massage, it is the best!! Drink specials and great music at LuLus. It was very relaxing. The rooms were spacious, and if you go there expecting too much you will be disappointed....rooms looked old and rusty. Great ocean views made it worthwhile.

Great place to stay

I did some whale watching, swimm with dolphins and snorkeling. Took a drive down Highway 11 to Volcano's State Park area, the whole area had a strange beauty, the black landscape was something out of a science-fiction movie, some strange planet. Visited the black sand beach. The whole experience was something I'll never forget. I would have loved to see the lava flows but there was none during my short visit to the area.

A nice surprise

We were greeted by friendly smiles, good food, a luau show to watch from our balcony, a clean room daily, towels for the lagoon or pool, a koi pond in our lobby, and a great location for walking. The optional orientation presentation breakfast and information was worthwhile. Above expectations!
