Nice vacation location

We upgraded to an ocean front. It was in the older part, but the view was worth it. We walked all over Kailua. Didn't check out the ocean pool until leaving. Can snorkel there and see pretty fish. Beautiful views from bars and resturant.

Very Nice!

Very nice. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean and comfortable. Right in town and on the water what more could you ask for. The restaurant and ocean front bar were both good, I was very pleased.

Excellence!

The hotel was comfortable and very nice even though we stayed in one of the towers that has yet to be renovated. The hotel is perfectly situated on the beach with wonderful views of the ocean, the surrounding bay front and the sunsets. Ali'i Drive is less than 5 minutes walk from the hotel and is home to great food and galleries, both providing wonderful Hawai'i atmosphere. The Big Island is very laid back and the hotel was relaxed but still very "upscale" for lack of a better word. The hotel is also centrally located on the island making it a short drive to the northern coast and about 2-3 hours from Volcanos National Park. Hilo would be similarily situated but is a much smaller port and other areas on the western coast would not be quite so central to the north and south tips. I was also very impressed by their response to the tsunami evacuation that just took place (February 2010). The evacuation itself was very well executed then, once everyone was sitting around waiting, they provided water and food at no charge to "take care of their guests". Where we were waiting at, they were the only hotel set up with supplies. Once the evacuation order was lifted, they were back to the hotel getting the power back on and dining areas open within the hour (I didn't expect to see much opening up so late in the day). Overall, I was very impressed with the hotel, the room, the location, and the staff. I definitely could not have asked for more for the price, in fact, I think the price could be a bit higher and be justified.

Very nice stay.

Location location location. That's what it's all about. Perfect location for all the action in Kona. Walking distance to all the tourist restaurants and hot spots. Short driving distance to Target, Wal-Mart, Safeway and other cheaper options for supplies. Nice clean rooms and great atmosphere. Would stay again. Only major drawback is having to pay $10 per night for parking even though you're a guest.

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

There are a few stores (Wal-Mart, Target, Ross, Safeway, etc) a couple of miles away in case you need to buy supplies or groceries. The ABC stores across the street are expensive. There are also a few fast food places in the same area if you want to save money on food.

Aged but decent

The hotel is located in the center of Kailua Bay. Most of the hotels have seen their heyday come and gone. Most of the nightlife on the island is here and you'll want to stay here if you want to mix with locals. The other resorts are a disneyland of all the stores you have at home except they are located on isolated locations around the island. The staff is very friendly and the views are fantastic. A rental car is necessary no matter what hotel you stay. The hotel is aged and had many coats of paint on many of the areas. Still the hotel is clean. The hotel bar has a normal fare of hotel food and the breakfast buffet average. You are walking distance to many places of shopping and food. You will find individually owned stores in this location. Of all the hotels in the bay area I think this one has the best views. The massage therapist is a stellar professional and knows her work. She is highly recommended.

Huggos next door is a great piano bar that is not loud and has a great staff with good music. Great if you are out of your Jager bomb shot phase of your life or just want a classy night.

NIce overall

We were upgraded to a full ocean view room - very nice. But we were on the ground floor and the lanai tho spacious is easily accessible by adjoining rooms' lanais or anyone who walks along the wall. Adjoining rooms had a revolving door of one-two nighters and some were noisy. Try for the 2nd or 3rd floors for privacy and security. Great location to walk to town, outdoor market,Kona Brewery (a longer walk) etc.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

You can get bus rides up and down Alii Drive for good snorkeling locally but a car is nice for all the other great things to do/see on the island.

Great Location

Our room was noise and on the 3rd level. It was roomy, but right above a bunch of vent or air conditioning fans. Oyher rooms the offered were just as bad or small. If I stayed there again I would insist on the 6th or 7th level.

Stunning views of Paradise

We booked the Bay Tower which the views were totally amazing, but I have a bad back and the beds were like sleeping on concrete. I really hope they renovate those rooms within the next 5 years, because I am gonna request the same room, hopefully getting some sleep this time. It was wonderful and the most beautiful place I have ever been. We couldn't ask for more beauty. It was also a little noisy, beings we were very close to the resturant next door, and they had bands way into the night. Other than that, I enjoyed sleeping with the balcony doors open and listening to the waves every night and every morning. I loved my hotel and I loved my vacation!!! The pros are far more than the cons. Thank you so much Kona Resort.
