Overpriced and tacky

Would recommend Sun, Oct 24, 2010
The hotel is not bad, but, like so many in Hawai'i, has seen better days. Internet is not free. Breakfast is reasonably priced.

Royal Kona Resort Review.

Would recommend Sat, Oct 23, 2010
sightseeing, volcanoes, looking for hawaiiana. only problem was the toilet broke (room 357) lagoon tower. but we got moved to a beach front room. so all was good. Loved the view. Restaurant was too pricey though. never ate there after first night. close to shops. parking fee was normal. staff very helpful. especially when trying to get boarding passes for return trip. only when I complained about the toilet and desk clerk said 'what do you want me to do'? I thought that was ridiculous. 'Fix it, of course'!! overall, very nice, and a great place to relax.

Great price and stay!

Would recommend Mon, Oct 18, 2010
We only stayed one night but it was super comfortable and fun. We booked in with the lowest rate but ended up with a corner room with a huge balcony and a view of the ocean. The pool and bar were great and, after spending a week camping, the on site laundry was perfect. Also, we requested an early check in and got into our room no problem at around 1 in the afternoon, which was great and gave us more time to hang out at the pool and such.

Money saver

They charge 10 bucks for parking, but it looked like people were just parking along the road and alley running parallel to the ocean. We paid, but in hindsight would have probably tried to just park on the street.

Nice...but not

Would recommend Thu, Oct 7, 2010
Our room was ocean front, corner patio in the Lagoon Tower, with an incredible view right over the crashing waves. Unfortunately, however, it smelled musty and old, and anything metal in the room, from tables to door jams, had rust on it. Bathroom was straight out of the 70's. Be careful with the sliding glass doors, you might rip a shoulder. Carpets were old commercial grade, nasty too, laid right over the concrete floor. The "Fitness Center" literally consists of a single treadmill, a yoga ball, and a couple small barbells all packed into one of the regular sized rooms...what a joke! "Don's MaiTai Bar" in the hotel has good happy-hour deals on drinks and pupus, friendly bartenders and a KILLER sunset view, stay CLEAR of Don The BeachComber Restaurant unless you light your cigars with hundred dollar bills. Short walk to several eating establishments and nightlife locations, shopping as well. Price was right though[...].

Dining

Eating and drinking establishments very close by...Island Lava Java for breakfast and coffee. Humpy's for a sunset microbrew at the bar and decent happy-hour prices on surprisingly good food. Lulu's is a cardiac death trap with horrible service. Outback Steakhouse...do I even need to comment on that one? Bongo Ben's, nothing remarkable, except the price.

My first stay in Hawaii at this resort

Would recommend Tue, Sep 28, 2010
Great Hotel and very helpful staff. Did not stay in hotel long because the location allowed for me to walk around a very nice stretch of beach next to the hotel. While you need a car in Big Island, places of interest are not very far from location. Great Ocean view rooms and shows have made my decision easier to stay there again. Other friends have stayed there before me and have recommended it and I will do the same for others.

Attractions

To get to all attractions, there is a little bit of a drive involved, but nothing too taxing.

Pros and Cons

Would recommend Fri, Sep 24, 2010
Best points: Great location within walking distance of everything in Kailua-Kona Nice discount cards given on check-in Was upgraded to ocean view room at no charge Safe in Room Great View of ocean Not So Good: Rooms are dated and need upgrades. TV is old analog style, not very large. Bathroom had signs of peeling paint, rusting fixtures

Relaxing stay

Loved the room, the staff and location. Breath taking views and amazing bar and grill in lobby. Breakfast was a little pricey and pool could have been bigger with a little more privacy

Over priced stay

One of the things that they could have had would have been a hot tub. Yes it was Hawi'i and hot but sometimes it is nice to just soak in a hottub at night and relax your muscles. It would have been nice to not have to listen to music blaring and rattling the windows and glass table in our room until 11:00pm from a pre-concert thing they were having.

Shopping hint

rent a moped, they are alot easier to find parking for than a car so you won't have to walk everywhere.

A good stay

Would recommend Fri, Aug 13, 2010
We arrived early, but the staff had a room for us. The room was in the Lagoon Tower, very spacious and had an ocean view from the lanai. The room was very clean, and housekeeping was quick and thorough every day of our stay. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. Our only complaint was the service at the hotel lounge. We went down to the lounge to view the sunset twice (a fantastic sunset viewing location) and were extremely disappointed with the service. In a word, SLOW! Had one drink and an appetizer, and it took 2 hours from the time we sat down until we received our check. The second time, we never received a check, even after we complained to the bartender and all the waitstaff we could find. This is a good hotel, a little older, but the rooms are spacious and clean, housekeeping is great, and the staff is friendly. Just don't order from the lounge unless you have a few hours to burn.

Attractions

Parasailing with UFO is about a 10 minute walk from Royal Kona. They run a friendly and professional service. It's a bit spendy, but my wife and I both felt it was well worth the money. Takes about an hour from check-in to return. A fantastic experience.
