Simplicity, beauty and hospitality

The Mauna Lani is the least "fussy" first class resort at which I have ever stayed. The feel is completely casual with open air vistas from the gorgeous lobby entrance to the rooms. Everything is local wood and simple so nothing gets in the way of what you came for, the view, the weather and the ocean. If marble bathrooms and gleaming gold fixtures are your style this is not the hotel for you. If you love being able to open the doors to the lanai and just close the wood shutters for privacy every night and enjoy the sea breezes you are in the right spot. The staff are friendly and always helpful, but not hovering. They treat you like a guest they would invite to their home and demonstrate true hospitality. Although not the newest and shiney-ist resort on the island it has the polish of a classic with simple quality everywhere. Combined with a great beach, a great restaurant and a world-class spa it has all the amenities without the fussy veneer. If you want to relax and just enjoy Hawaii I highly recommend it. After 16 years of annual vacations and trying most of the resorts on the Kohala Coast, this is the one we now return to time and time again.

Excellent staff, world class sunsets offset disappointments

The best feature of this hotel was the staff!!! Everyone at the front desk was very helpful and the valet staff was outstanding. We were very dissatisfied with our standard room (parking lot view) and moved tiwce before upgrading to a partial ocean view. The room was well appointed except for the dresser. Nice pool and hot tub area. What was most disapointing was the food and drinks at the beach. Just expected better from a such a highly rated resort - expensive and bland. Our best meals and drinks were all off-property. Location is great for going just about anywhere. Go to the Famer's Market in Waimea - it's a real treat and slice of Hawaii life! Just wasn't the value we expected. Aloaha spirit of the staff keeps it a winner. AMAZING sunsets, from the beach or if you are up high enough, your room and take a nap in the hammocks.

Talk to the locals and dine out. Better values and a chance to get authentic island food. Ippy's, Three Fat Pigs and the food at the Farmer's Market in Waimea are all treats!

Good option

Room was really nice and the location is great. Staff was pleasant. The food was ok, though not a lot of options on site. Seemed a bit pricey for what you got. We ended up doing most dinners at the Fairmont up the road. I think next time we would either go a bit cheaper - i.e., the Hilton, or more up market - i.e., the Fairmont.

Weekend Getaway

We stayed here two years ago and loved it. Coming back was just as enjoyable. We explored other resorts in the area for possibilities, but we continue to return to the Mauna Lani. Perfect if you want direct access to excellent beach, pool. We prefer a location with few children, so this was perfect for us.

Great vacation

The staff were very friendly. Facility is great! We we upgraded to an ocean view room...huge bonus. The snorkeling is wonderful. Gear is included with the resort fee. Great service all around. We had a late flight 9:55 pm. While we we not granted a late check-out. We were allowed to use all hotel amenities and were given a hospitality room to shower and relax before we left.

There is a shopping area with food court about a 2 mile drive down the highway. Here the food is reasonably priced. Hotel dining is a bit expensive.

Hotel is more a secluded resort

Overall rating is 4 stars, because the rating does not include questions regarding to what extent the hotel is isolated/secluded. If that were the case, then I would rate this hotel 3 stars at max. - Hotel target group: families, couples, who are satisfied with: beach, swimming pool, golf, spa etc. - Not for people who like: to shop (no city streets/shops), do other activities (surfing, snorkling, other watersports), sightseeing, seeing culture, enjoy different choices of restaurants and food. - You need a car to drive to find other activities, restaurants, etc. - The beach is so so, the sand is ok, and the water also, but it is rather rocky. - Too quiet at the hotel, too few people. Conclusion: if you are looking to basically only relax by tanning, swimming, laying at the beach, and accept to do things that only the hotel offers, than this is a very good place to stay at. Otherwise go to Oahu and stay at one of the hotels at Waikiki, it has so much more to offer in terms of restaurants, water sports, shopping, and the beach is much better. Waikiki also has more people/visitors; but it is not crowded. We went in Aug 2014, and it was just the right amount of people.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

Take a bike to the small shopping center within the Mauni Lani resort. You can buy 100% Kona coffee at the local supermarket, and eat a great steak (I had the ribeye) at Ruth Chris' Steak House, it was one of the few highlights during the stay at the Mauni Lani.

Mauna Lani

We have been coming here for 25 plus years. The ambiance is so perfect, laid back, and beautiful. Many of the staff members have been there for the long run and add to the charm. Mike, the beach bar, bartender is a gem and recognizes generations of customers. A relatively new addition is Chef Allen at the Canoe House who is really terrific. The only drawback is the tear down of the the beach restaurant which has led to a more limited beach menu. They are working on adding an outdoor grill which would be terrific. If you which to relax in a beautiful place and be completed relaxed, the Mauna Lani is the perfect spot. We will continue to return.

Beautiful, relaxing, quiet place.

Wanted to relax, sleep, enjoy good food, swim + snorkel, explore the island further ... loved it. Beautiful setting and beach. Did not use many of the resort offerings (spa is pricey) - nice quiet place, very friendly staff. Good food at Canoehouse. Free wifi, parking, and very nice, spacious room + bathroom. Great location - quick to airport (KOA) and sights along West coast.

Great Beach!

Be sure to request the bed you want on check-in. We didn't request a King and they gave us 2 queens so we asked to be moved and they did promptly, but it slowed us getting settled in. Overall, the hotel is absolutely beautiful and the beach and snorkeling is great. All the food is overpriced, but there is a R. Chris and a T. Bahama within biking or driving distance. There also is an affordable grocery store close with wonderful food. We would stay again if we found a good deal. No upgrades so we had no ocean view, but we weren't in the room that much with the beautiful grounds.
